5-0 out of 5 stars Great Help
This book has been a great help to me.It works out all odd numbered problems to the Calculus seventh edition text in great detail.I breeze through homework assignments now. This is one of the first study guides I've ever seen that actually gives helpful examples for possible test questions. If you want do well in your calculus class, this would definitely be a helpful addition to your arsenal.Only disadvantage is that there are no verbal explanations of procedures. If you have a half decent teacher this won't matter. You can get the how's and the why's from attending class. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book...
Lial and Hornsby have written a number of books on Algebra. Hence, their expertise in this field of Mathematics and ability to deliver in the form most suitable for the middle and high schoolers , in particular iswonderful. Review Exercises at the end of each majorsubdivisionprovide means for readers to practice. And also ensure that the readershave gained overall expertise in the particular subdivision. Also , anotheradvantage of this book , in contrast to many other available books, is thecumulative review exercises that engulf concepts from all the precedingchapters, which provides the means to show how these topics areinterrelated.Tests provided also aid in this process. The topics are wellorganized and explained.Very Good Book... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brief but adequate for understanding the concepts.
This book is pretty nice. It provides you a lot useful concepts with brief explanation. Your job is to study and do the homework to digest that such concepts ( you'd better have a solution book that comes along with it). Don't blame for the book not covering everything as you expected, like other science courses, you should have a fair understanding the basics before go up to higher level.

4-0 out of 5 stars average textbook
This is your average math textbook.I haven't had any problems with it.It gives pretty good examples and explanations for each section.

5-0 out of 5 stars My advice - don't do it alone.
This book is good because it give you clear (easy) examples of the material it is explaining. The practice problems are also very good because they start off from the most basic then progress to advanced. This books has a lot of practical real world problems. Some of the material can be difficult at times, that's why I suggest you purchase "3,000 Solved Problems in Calculus (Schaums Solved Problems Series)" in addition to this book. The Solved Problems Series helps when you're studying quick examples just before the test. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
Examples are few and offer little explaination.
2-0 out of 5 stars Very poor explanations
I dont think the other reviewers are quite accurate in their assessment of this text. The book does offer many examples, and the pseudocode is very helpful in implementing these methods. The real problem with this book is that many of the explanations of the methods are written in pseudocode. This makes learning the concepts extremely confusing and difficult, as they are written in code. The proofs are helpful, but with the confusing notation in iterative methods, there is no way near enough information to correctly learn what is going on.I took this class in graduate school and never used the book unless I wanted to see some code.My advice: Take notes from the professor, and if you need to code up a method, go to the library and copy down what you need.A VERY poor teaching aid!

2-0 out of 5 stars VERY DRY
I normally do not review books, but I feel so strongly negative towards this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Reminder
I took Algebra in college after taking classes like Calculus 3 and Probability and Statistics. It may seem strange, but it was one the smartest things I ever did. Out of high school it seems like there are a lot of rules involved with algebra, but after reviewing those rules with this book, I realized that there were only a few rules that are responsible for all the intricacies of algebra. Having this new grasp on algebra really made classes like Modern Algebra and many computer books seem very intuitive. I no longer struggling figuring out how to simplify, factor or deal with irrationals. I also have a great reference whenever I forget how to deal with inequalities or anything else for that matter. This book is great for someone trying to remaster algebra again of just as a course textbook. Be careful not to buy the extra workbook that comes with this - it isn't really that useful, as the book provides amples of exercises and solutions. If you think you are too "good" to relearn some algebra, I guaruntee that recovering the basics will improve your abilities to do math 10 fold - it worked for me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
Well priced, full of every possible ODE technique, and is perfect for engineers and scientists who are not full-fledged mathematicians.I especially appreciate the applications sections--instead of learning obscure technique after obscure technique, the reader can jump ahead to problems in mechanics, physics, etc. and grab the most useful of the bunch. This makes the material much more interesting. The only downside is that I fear I'll wear my copy out, since it's an 800 page paperback.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, comprehensive, and well organized.
This is by far the greatest ODE book in the market. It is extremely thorough and comprehensive. I am an undergrad and I will be taking an ODE class this coming fall 06. After reading most of this book, I am way ahead of the class. I recommend this to anyone who truly wants to learn how to solve differential equations.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Majority Rules
In this case, everyone is right, this is an amazing book.I used it in conjunction with my required textbook for an undergraduate diff eq course. This book was far superior.Who would think a subject like this could be made so accessible?Like others, comparing this 'dinosaur' to current text makes me wonder at the declining level of quality in our education system. Or maybe this book is just that good? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great introductory text
I recently used this book in an undergraduate course on algorithm design and analysis. While some areas of the book are lacking (specifically answers to critical exercises and some concepts were a little rough in their explainations), overall the book provides a good introduction to both sequential and parallel algorithms.
5-0 out of 5 stars Appealing book
This book will help anyone learn about the design and analysis of algorithms-even without the prior knowledge of algorithms. It starts with the basic principles, using good and proven examples such as factorial computation. Anyone with basic mathematics knowledge will have no problem following the authors.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, full of pseudocode and examples
I took the undergrad/grad version of the class from one of the co-authors last quarter and found it to be quite enjoyable.I agree that an answer key to at least some of the exercises would be helpful if you were trying to work through this material on your own, but I was quite impressed with the diagrams and figures, especially the ones illustrating the operation of the pseudocode.I felt the book had a good mix of theoretical discussion with more practical "hands-on" treatment of the specific algorithms discussed. Is it "Algorithms for Dummies?" No.But if you work through the illustrations as you read the text, I found it quite understandable, and don't know how you could simplify it any further without losing something in the translation. All in all, I was quite pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent in-depth book
I have used the earlier edition of Kaplan's excellent text on Advanced calculus from early 1960's...I have studied and taught this subject and I always like to refer to this book....excellent and solid foundation in advanced caluculs for any student

5-0 out of 5 stars great didatic
I study this book entirely in a calculus review. The points are:
1-0 out of 5 stars I recommend James Stewart
From what I noticed, this book comes with few examples, which I need to learn well. However, I learned the same topics originally with Calculus by James Stewart (fifth edition), which comes with very clear explanations, diagrams, and examples. Then the practice problems start off easy and then gradually increase in difficulty. Instead of Kaplan's Advanced Calculus, the James Stewart book is highly resourceful and I would recommend it to any student in calculus, because it can work for practically anyone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent if it si still as good as the edition from 20 years ago
I can only review an edition of this book dated at least 20 years ago. I bought it when I was in high school (in 10th grade actually) and used it by myself to learn calculus.
1-0 out of 5 stars A totally ineffective method of teaching Calculus
I am a student at CSUSB and I have had to use this book for 3 quarters of Calculus. At the school all the professors say the book is horrible and can't wait until the department changes. In 2005 they finally changed the book to Caculus by Larson, Hostetler, Edwards. It is ironic in desperation I asked a fellow student how he was handing the problems of this book. He said that he borrowed a book from his friend who said the book was excellent. It turned out that it was the book written by Larson, Hostetler, and Edwards. I then obtained a copy for myself and found the book to be excellent.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant method
This book is literally the best basic calculus text you can possibly get.Anyone wanting to start learning calculus NOW should get this.No real previous mathematical knowledge is necessary. There are several appendices on algebra and series etc.The book discusses trigonometry, so you can learn the book practically without knowing a thing. The "feeling" of the book is inexplicable.Reading this book really gave me an true understanding of basic calculus.Excellent for people like me who need proofs (especially visual ones) have a solid grasp on concepts. If your only goal in learning calculus is to do well on examinations, this book is definatelynot for you.You should get "Calculus for Dummies" or something like that. The great thing about the text is that it appeals to almost everyone. If there is a certain chapter you don't care for or doesn't matter to you, for example on methods of graphing, you can just skip it, and it will not do any harm.Highly intelligently organized. If you want some help in you physics class on basic vector algebra, just turn to chaper 18 and just read! This bookis full of applications, which is great. It also has several historical notes. The colors make the book very engaging to read.Unless your colorblind, this will help engage your interest.Very adequate spacings on the paper as to keep you clearheaded and focused. The drawings rival those of Picasso. They show calculus to be a LIVELY subject. The examples (inside the chapters) are very helpfull.Stein offers several suggestions on how to solve certain problems. Its a shame; this book does not attract the amount of attention it deserves.I did get stuck a couple times; but that is inevitable.Definately get this one: its a gem to have.I can understand how some people would hate this book; its not very concise. That should not be a hindrance. If you feel there is no need to read on about a subject, skip some pages. At the end of chapters it all comes together with a summary of the most important concepts. The book prepares you for study of calculus-based sciences such as physics, and for more advanced mathematical topics as well.I worship this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A classic, richness in knowledge few books attempt anymore.
I used these books (Vols. 1&2) in my last two years of high school back in South America. I remember long nights of bad coffee and cigarettes locked in my room reading it over and over. The book is full of really cool knowledge (even for a non-mathematician). Most of today's students learn like little parrots, (without thinking or understanding) just repeating things mindlessly. This will make this book unpopular among these people because having to read a sentence and stop to figure things out on their own is too hard a challenge for them. I guess that like the high standard of the education of old when teachers loved teaching and their subject this book is also going the way of the dinosaurs. I'll get my copy before that if I were you though ;-)

4-0 out of 5 stars A righteous calculus text
This one of the more righteous books in the author's oeuvre and that is saying something! The subject matter is closely akin to a course I took in Freshman year however it excludes manifolds and operatoins on them.In this respect, the book is not as good as some others out there for an integrated view that even a frosh can grasp. However, overlooking this shortcoming, the text is definitely righteous, being one of the few out there with this integrated approach and being a classic of sorts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very thorough, but very dense
I'm currently taking an honors calculus sequence at the U of WI, and have used this book and the first volume for the past three semesters.Needless to say, you have to take Apostol with a grain of salt.Although the no-frills style and lack of worked examples is upsetting to many students who are used to pictures, thorough examples, and color, these volumes cover a lot of material in a small space. And also beware; my professor and others in the math department have found errors in definitions and theorems, and the archaic notation is off-setting at times.Basically, if you're looking for straighforward information (written by a mathematician, for a mathematician), you've found the perfect book.If you're looking for an easy-to-read and understand book, keep searching. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great vector calculus refresher
If you've been introduced to paritial integration then you'll be able to follow this book.I wish I had know about it while I was taking multivarible calculus and electrodynamics. There are a number of solved problems at the end of each chapter.A great way to foster your intutive knowledge of those little electrons.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book has been helping generations of math students on vector calculus. It is a great presentation of the subject with lots of helpful diagrams (those are hard to find in more formal texts). The back page has a good summary of all the formulas for cartesian, cylindrical and spherical coordinates. Every vector calculus student should read this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to Real Analysis
Lay's book is my second favorite book on introductory level real analysis--please see my review of Elementary Analysis by Kenneth Ross.Ross somehow covers a lot more material, and quite a bit more clearly than Lay, BUT, the first two chapters of Lay's book covering axiomatic set theory are wonderfully written.I particularly love the clearly written coverage of the paradoxes contained in the Fraenkel-Zermalo Axioms, in Particular the Banach-Tarski paradox which states that a solid sphere of radius A < B can be cut an pasted into a sphere of radius B. Then, from chapter 3 onwards, Lay and Ross pretty much follow each other, Lay being more wordy than Ross, Ross being far more clear than Lay.
5-0 out of 5 stars good to go
The book arrived in good condition and I have not had any problems with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely a good first text
I bought this book because I have been looking for a Introductory analysis text that isn't too advanced, but yet doesn't gloss over the essential stuff, and I found it in Lay's book. For the self-studier, this book is excellent!I have several books on analysis: Shilov, Kolomogorov, Rosenlicht, Ross,etc...For the beginner, this book is superior to all of them.A plethora of examples. Also, a good range of problems:from straight forward problems requiring only the use of a definition to more advanced problems requiring a little thought. If you already have had some Analysis, then this book is probably not for you. But, if you are a student who wants to learn Analysis on your own, then this book would be hard to beat. After this book, one should be able to tackle "Papa Rudin".For according to Rudin, all that is needed to study his "Real and Complex Analysis" tome, is the first seven chapters of his "Principles of Mathematical Analysis".This book covers all that Rudin covers with the exception of Riemann-Stieltjes integration. On the whole, this is a great start! If proof-based math is new to you, then you will appreciate the first chapter on proofs.Would have given five stars, but I would have liked to seen Riemann-Stieltjes integration. That's really only nit picking, though. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of description... a bit too much
The book is excellent for self-study with its in-depth descriptions. The reader should look out for the occasional misprint (even in definitions, which makes it a bit more difficult), but if the book is read carefully these errors expose themselves. The reader should highlight definitions for later reference (since they are sometimes within the text).
5-0 out of 5 stars Very lucid and ideal material for learning real analysis
Most books on mathematics simply dump concepts, equations and examples and let you figure out what to do. Not this one. The book is written in a passionate manner where the author takes pains to explain why we are going in a particular direction and the goals. The style is extremely lucid and informal, something unusual for a subject that is steeped in formal mathematics. Yet the author presents, explains and covers all the formal theorems, concepts etc . The book also has excellent exercises. A truly noteworthy achievement. I would highly recommend this to anyone (especially self-study) trying to learn this subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best to understand and do Analysis
This is the best Analysis book I ever read, you can learn not only the subject, but how to do Math, the introductive paragraph in each chapter gives the motivation of the topic, for example the introduction to the Lebesgue integral is memorable, many people "learn" the Lebesgue theory passively, some think it is a play to integrate strange functions, instead Prof. Strichartz treats estensively the PRACTICAL weaknesses of the Riemann theory.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular
O.K., I don't even know how to start...this bookis GREAT.Iwas always afraid of everything that involves numbers, but not anymore.
5-0 out of 5 stars Look & Think no Further or Longer!!
Michael Kelley's books', that is the ones that pertain to both algebra and calculus, are written so well it's nearly to good to be true. If you're like me, you've been looking and nearly afraid to actually buy a book about algebra or calculus because you've also probably spent a ton of money on that so called "teach yourself" series or style only to slam the cover shut and toss it up on a bookshelf.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great for a quick refresher
I am 30 and decided to return to college.I had to take the college placement exam and so I needed to brush up on my Algebra. This book is great for that. The book started with the basics and moved up with each chapter.I was fun to read and not at all like the boring old textbooks. The only fault I could find in the book is that there were not enough review problems to do.Each chapter was broken down into sections and each section had about 2 algebra problems to complete, with the answers provided in the back of the book.I wish the author would have expanded this section to a minimum of 5 exercises per section so I truly would grasp each section.
