1-0 out of 5 stars Lots of code but little explanation
The explanations are cursory and tend to overlook many of the points to be considered before applying one of their examples to real problems. While good at providing source code for an experienced signal processing engineer or mathematician, this book can be dangerous for those in search of a quick fix without the background to evaluate what they are really doing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Obligatory book
What can I say? I think that I only want to say that this book is the best of the best when you talk about numerical methods. A lot of code and a great mathematical background. It's an obligation to have this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good starting point
This is very simply the only book that explains all essential numerical algorithms comprehensively and gives examples how one might implement them. The infinite number of reviews and discussions about the code can - in my eyes - be summarized as follows: it works, it lacks robustness, and you will find a better open-source alternative to virtually every single function. Some details that are worth knowing:

4-0 out of 5 stars Rejoice if your university made you use it!
First of all, what is this book about? It's just your regular multivariable calculus stuff, what some would have as calculus 2 (others as calculus 3).
1-0 out of 5 stars Agree with K.Green
This is not a math nerd who learned calculus in middle school, nor a professor. This is just a lowly student that learned single variable calculus in 11/12th grade of High School. I found this book to be lacking in explanation and the examples in the text were not very helpful either.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent
After a couple of weeks of using this textbook, I am mostly happy with it.It does a good job of explaining the material, however, it is not very concise and takes a long discussion to make a point. It is longer than necessary and contains unnecessary features.Other than that, for the money it is a good deal, and thus the four stars. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars VERY different from most introductory calculus books--simply amazing!
This book, unlike most Calculus books out there, is meant to be read and understood. The way that Calculus is taught nowadays, people use books that are 90% problems, exercises, and examples, with an emphasis on computation. This book is 90% prose, and the emphasis is on cultivating a deep understanding. In addition, the book does away with the gap between "Calculus" and "Analysis", choosing to begin with a more mathematically mature perspective...but providing ample explanation for students who have not seen the material before.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book but only if you want a deep treatment
This is one of the best math books I have ever used; Apostol does a great job of giving you intuition and telling you why the topics are important. The exposition is very clear.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of heart!!
Both this book and the second volume were used in my Honors Calculus classes, and let me tell you, it's not for the faint of heart!!The book is very good, but unless you're willing to get into it and really go at the problems and theorems, it's not going to do you much good.If this is your first calculus textbook, don't expect detailed explanations and pretty summaries of the chapter, since it doesn't have them; do expect lots of theorems and complicated proofs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The way to learn algebra
Most critisism of the book are based in the fact that topic are not treated in deep, and the reason is that there is no need to do that. Lang's porpouse is to introduce the reader to HIGHER ALGEBRA, while for example Dummit & Foote just end in Category Theory or Homological Algebra. He just introduce what he consider necessary to know about groups. Of course, if your porpouse is to learn, let's say Group Cohomology, then its good for you to know as much as possible about groups, modules and stuff, but Lang's try to focus on what HE consider is important to be known.
4-0 out of 5 stars 4pro
It is one of the brilliant classics, must have for every advanced algebraist. Probably you will not find here such nouveau labyrinths of mathematical thought as in Beta Algebra by Algirdas Javtokas (which in my opinion is a revolutionary book), but it is unvaluable for seminars or supplementary material for algebra courses.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book grows on you.
When I examined this book as an undergraduate I did not like it; often this is a sign that a book is poorly written, but in this case I just needed more background. Now I see this text as a gold-mine: clearly written, provocative, and rich in examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars An unusually clear book -- and great for OCR researchers.
This nifty book is unusual in several respects: it is written in an extremely clear and simple style; it presents good clear code, both in print and on the accompanying CD; and it presents a variety of different methods for achieving each given goal. For example, the book presents a half-dozen different algorithms (usually with code) for edge-detection, for thresholding, and for skeletonization. For the most part, the book does a good job of explaining the relative merits or suitabilities of the different algorithms.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding source of implementations of image processing algorithms
This book is a great source of code for the implementations of common and not so common algorithms used in image processing and computer vision. It is not meant to be a textbook on either subject. For that I suggest you turn to "Digital Image Processing" by Gonzalez and Woods for the subject of image processing and to "Computer Vision" by Linda Shapiro for computer vision.
5-0 out of 5 stars I like this book

5-0 out of 5 stars Advanced Crypto for the college mind.
This very detailed work is not for the light hearted. It's an in depth look at the mathmatics behind cryptography. If you're looking for a book to help you program then look for Applied Cryptography by Bruce the crypto king instead. If you're looking for something to help you learn cryptoanalysis and how to break codes then this is the first step.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic traditional reference
The Chapter 14 - Efficient Implementation - shows several multiple precision algorithms. They are very easy to understand and implement under any microprocessor. It is a very good complement to the book set written by Donald Knuth (The Art of Computer Programming, Volumes 1-3 Boxed Set), another fantastic traditional reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very detailed book, but not for everyone.
This is a fairly strong book on crypto, with heavy detail on the math involved. The upside is that the second chapter is devoted to most of the important mathematical theory you'll need to understand for the rest of the book. The downside? That chapter tries to cover just about the same breadth of information as a semester long course in Number Theory.Read more

The positive reviews were right on the money, this book is the best!It allowed me to start using Mathematica with ease, compared to the many hours of past frustration while working on optimizations.I fought endlessly, struggling to decipher the software's baroque navigation, cryptic errors, hostility to the user which borders on abuse - but now Mathematica and I are becoming great friends thanks to Heikki Ruskeepaa's wonderful tome.THANK YOU FOR WRITING THIS BOOK!!!5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Great Mathematica Textbook
While it is unlikely that there is a pure Mathematica course anywhere, the textbook for it already exists!5-0 out of 5 stars Solutions

5-0 out of 5 stars Execllent Easy to Read
The examples in this book are great. All concepts in the text are explained clearly with many examples for the reader to review.I consider this text to be one of the best that I have used. This text is not only a great text to be used in the classroom, but it is so easy to understand that I also recommend this text for individual learning.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay if required, but
The Anton book appears to be the standard in teaching undergrad LA, but I personally didn't like it very much. Part of the problem is due to several misprints in the early chapters. Some of the definitions of basic concepts are confusing at best, wrong at the worst. I found myself relying on the Hubbard-Hubbard "Vector Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Differential Forms" to get through the course. The explanations were more concise and easier to understand. If you're teaching yourself, Hubbard-Hubbard is the way to go.

I have tutored math for over 20 years and Bittenger's book is one of the best I have ever seen for taking pre-algebra students from the basics to the complex. 4-0 out of 5 stars WOW!I never knew how much I forgot!
Trying to make George W. Bush happy with his No Child Left Behind, I decided to seek a highly qualified status in mathmatics. This book was a refresher for me as I have to bone up on all aspects of mathamatics. It is a very simplified and step by step overview of the 'meat' of calculus.I wouldn't reccommend this if you wanted to get a very involved look at the subject material, but for an overview or refresher, this works admirably. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The truth about how to become a successful trader
I purchased this book because I was trading with a method that used the awesome oscillator. I figured I should know something about the person who created it. I got much more than that. The book helped me to quit focusing on trading techniques and to start looking at my own mental state for trading. Turning inward has allowed me build better confidence in myself and mymethod. That in turn allows me to trade with a mindset which successful traders have. The fact that the book also presents a very viable trading method is just an added bonus. This book and "Trading In The Zone" by Mark Douglas transformed my trading career.

2-0 out of 5 stars Trading Books
As an experienced trader who has bought thousands of dollars of trading books from Amazon I found this one less than impressive.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mind blowing
The actual trading methodology is not really of interest to me. As a matter of fact, it's ironic that in the first half of the book statements such as "there is no magic system" and "all mechanical systems will fail" are made, then in the second half of the book a rather mechanical trading system that is referred to as "automagic" is described.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to understand algebra and/or trig, buy this book
As an unchallenged high school student 30 years ago, I never really put much effort into either algebra or trig and still managed to ace my tests. This lack of a rigorous algebraic and trigonometric foundation killed me in subsequent college calculus courses. This book fixed that problem, 30 years later! If you are looking for a book to challenge a motivated high school student, this is the book.I loaned it to one such student after I finished it and she very quickly completed a year and a half of high school algebra and trig in one summer and went on to ace honors calculus that fall.5-0 out of 5 stars The best math book I've seen
I'm an adult learner who has always had trouble with math. This was the text in pre-Calc.Provides (1) clear, step by step instruction, (2) uncomplicated margin exercises to reinforce basic concepts, (4) lots ofgood practical problems, (5) a sea of drill problems, (6) chapter reviewexercises and (7) chapter tests. I refer to this book regularly. I wishthese folks would do a Calculus book!

5-0 out of 5 stars An extremely helpful and concise review / re-learning text.
As a non-traditional student of 35 returning to undergraduate university, I had tested into Calculus but as the semester progressed, it bacame apparent that the intervening years had taken their toll on my math basics. It was clear that even as I struggled to understand the new material, Ihad either forgotten my basics or never learned them well. This lack wasseriously impeding learning the new material.I finally took a reviewcourse with this book, re-took the calculus, graduated cum laude, went onfor Masters degrees, and am now working on my doctorate. This book cutthrough all the "math-ese" to understanding the basics of thecalculations, not just regurgitating the material. The authors also seem tobe able to focus on exactly where people routinely have problems in a veryunderstandable language. It is not an exaggeration to say a single book canbe pivotal in one's success. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not so good. Avoid the combined edition. Brings no understanding.
This is a book mainly geared toward classes, possibly overcrowded, that have students from different disciplines (engineering, chemistry, physics, math, etc). This is the book for the Let's-get-this-over-with-quickly approach. I think that this book will probably disapoint physics or mathematics undergraduates - assuming, of course, they care about physics or maths.

To add a bit more information to the raw data of these reviews, I've mapped the universe of all possible readers of this book onto a set of x-y axes. Let the x-axis run from "non-Math-types" up through "Math-types." Let they y-axis go from "non-geniuses" up through "geniuses:"
5-0 out of 5 stars Best textbook I've ever had
I thought I was terrible at math until I picked up this book for a college calculus course. In contrast to virtually every other math textbook I'd ever been forced to use, this book explained concepts clearly and simply, providing examples that increased gradually in complexity.I happened to have a good professor that semester, but whenever I didn't understand something in class, I taught myself from this textbook. It was a rare pleasure to feel I could learn such a difficult subject independently.I ended up getting an A in the class - and more importantly, I learned I wasn't bad at math at all. ...
