5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Algebraic Resource
This is simply a must have for any student or homeschooling parent today.Basically, it's the dictionary of the mathematic world. It's simple, concise, and indispensable. It's full of easy to find formulas, without all the mess to confuse you.If you're stuck on algebra, this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A recommendation from an algebra teacher!
For the last three or four years, I have recommended this book to my students' parents.I teach algebra (grade 8) and pre-algebra (grades 7 and 8) and have found that his book is written in a non-threatening, easy to understand manner. It is a perfectly wonderful reference book.Math is scary enough...this book demystifies algebra.Love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Algebra to Go
This is the best reference handbook that parents and teachers will fine it useful for students. Algebra to Go, "demystifies algebra for students in 8 grades and up by explaining key and often complex math topics in a way that's clear, friendly, and understandable". It is also a great refresher for parents who may have forgotten a thing or two about Algebra.. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst calculus book on the market
This author has written a series of calculus books, and every one is deficient on numerous levels. She presumes a prior understanding of the subject and therefore her books do not cater to the first time student (of a particular subject). I have switched sections to get classes where her books are not used and gotten A's as a result. Its a terrible book, beware!

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible book!
This book does not provide enough examples, and the few they do give are nothing like the work problems. Every teacher I've had has said if they were not required to use it, they would use a different book. And on top of that, it is ridiculously expensive!I have finally been forced to get another text book, and it is much better (and cheaper). Do not get this book if you have a choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars I got an 'A' in Calculus I
This book gives challenging examples and problems. They force you to come up with your own strategies. It helps you do well on tests and quizzes.Highly recommened book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Beginning Algebra
This book is in great condition For being used, no writting on any pages or the covers, no bent pages, over all in perfect condition, and I am picky on how a book looks. I hardly even used the book because I ordered it and it was the worng book but I looked through it and used it to study until I got the right book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wrong book, no response to email complaint
The book is the incorrect edition of the one I ordered. It is a math book, and inappropriately is the annotated instructor's edition. The invoice is correct, but the book is not.The company, SRJbooks2@yahoo.com has not responded to my complaint and request to corrct the order.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok
This book was required for my math instruction, and as several readers have mentioned before, I am glad that the instructor was an excellent teacher the book by itself is no use. Unless you understand math to begin with.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good-but wordy
The book was very helpful in helping me to finally learn Algebra. My complaint though is that the wording is too much and very confusing to understand for anyone who has a hard time with math.Get rid of the large pictures/graphs, study tips and objectives and maybe this book wouldn't be so big and heavy. The examples were what saved me because they were well defined and I wouldn't have understood what to do based on the explanations. Overall a good book.

4-0 out of 5 stars This was a competent book with one small problem.
College Algebra is quite authorative on the subject matter covered and helps the student grasp the key points as well as some of the finer points of Algebra. While I was in this course I had the most difficult time trying to find certain supplements the book suggested that were put out by the publisher. They had no knowledge of the material at the company but it was clearly stated in the text. All in all the overall text and message of the book was rather competent and illuminating. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars it can work wonders, if you're willing to work hard
After being away from math for decades, I suddenly needed to take a college-level algebra class. As a lifelong math-o-phobe, I was terrified, but after working through the exercises in this book, I not only aced the placement exam and avoided a semester of high school level refresher algebra, I aced the class with a very high A.I credit my grade in that class in part to the rock-solid foundation taught by this book, and I recommend it enthusiastically to anyone who is struggling with algebra.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
I am not a math person, but this book helped me prepare for a college math placement test. It gave me just the review I needed. It did a better job of explaining many concepts in Algebra that I just never understood in school. I haven't taken a math class in over 14 years, but after reading this book I was able to enroll in a college Algebra class! For a math book, it's terrific. I highly recommend this book. It's all you will need to get you up to speed in Algebra.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am glad I found this!
I am 46 years old and have not cracked open an Algebra textbook in close to thirty years. The reviews I read about this book helped me to decide to purchase it, since an upcoming Intermediate Algebra course is looming on the horizon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good graduate text book
This book makes no claims to be the mathematical bible on stochastic calculus and I believe that the author refers (in a blatant piece of marketing) to the other Shreve book with Karatzas, which trust me IS a very intractable read.
1-0 out of 5 stars Correction of previous review.
My thanks to Mr Gordon Brown for commenting on my previous review. In that review I claimed that a weaker version of the Girasanov's theorem is proved ( this is correct)and that the author does this by impossing a weaker ( this should have read stronger, my apologies) condition. The remainder of my comments still stand. Specifically, it is not a priori clear form the premises that condition 4.3.1 on page 187, is indeed satisfied. Finally, Mr Gordon's last remark regarding the credibility of my person deserves no comment.

3-0 out of 5 stars An OK book
While its a very readable book I felt at times that the book leaved out some important details about certain topics. For example it gives an example and explains how to prove something yet gives no directions on how to disprove it, problems still require to do it. Another example later in the book is when it explains how to do something, shows an example, then mentions that some problems have multiple solutions but gives no directions on how to approach these kind of problems or how to make sure that you have all the solutions, you're on your own spending hours trying to put everything together.

3-0 out of 5 stars Computation problems = 5 stars; Proof problems = 1 star; True/False problems = 3 stars
This was the textbook that my school has been using for its first and second year Linear Algebra courses. I found it somewhat terse. It seems like it could be a great book for someone already familiar with linear algebra or the logic aspect of mathematics; I don't recommend it for anyone who is not very familiar with proofs. Fortunately, it doesn't lack examples of how to solve computation problems and solutions to the odd-numbered problems are provided in the back of the book. Unfortunately, when it comes to the proof problems, instead of just providing the reader with the answer like most other texts, the author will either mention a hint or refer the reader to the study guide (mine came with a disk which has to be installed on a computer), which could be a problem for readers not familiar with how to do proofs. Serving as a somewhat of a mediator between these two extremes are true/false questions which accompany each chapter in each section of the text. While those start out somewhat fun in the beginning, they can also get tiresome and repetive very quickly. The solutions to these, like the proofs, are not provided, but fortunately, all one has to do is read the text carefully in order to determine the appropriate response.
1-0 out of 5 stars underwhelmed
i'm not going to write 3 paragraphs about how much i love math, and what my fricking sat score was and how many A's i have as most nerds do when they review a math book.i am a math nerd too, but i'll keep the discussion to why i dislike the book (which will be short too, as i need to get back to studying it!)

3-0 out of 5 stars Inconsistent
This text, though very readable, teaches too much through example problems as opposed to actually explaining the information in the text. Presentation of some topics (chapter 6 particularly) was very poor. Some chapters were out of place (chapter 9 on differential equations, which should have been placed right before the last chapter).

5-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT buy earlier editions for class--NOT same problems.
Hey, this isn't a review. I just want to let you know that the people who claim that the fourth edition is the "same content" are trying to rip you off. The fourth edition is NOT the same as the fifth edition. The homework problems are NOT the same. If you get the fourth edition, you will not be able to complete your assignments for class if the instructor gives assignments out of the book.
3-0 out of 5 stars this coming from a student
Having taken 3 Calculus classes in sequence at my university with this book and having used one chapter of this book in my 4th math class that I am currently in (differential equations), I would say that I've used most of this book.Let's just say that this book needs a professor to go along with it.There's really not much of a chance, unless you're really smart, that you can only use this book with no other study aids and understand all of the concepts presented. This book really is made for your math professor to more fully explain.Having said that, I must add that the CD-ROM enclosed is GREAT.I guess if you don't have your professor to go over the finer details of some of the more vague concepts, then this is the next best thing. The sounds-like-a-grad-student voice that explains each chapter in great detail is easy to understand and makes most concepts pretty clear.I have to say that this CD-ROM is saving me on my midterm. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great calculus book
I agree whole heartedly with the other reviews here, and merely wish to second their opinions.I bought my copy in 1960 and would never part with it. I still have crystal clear images in my mind from courant's exposition of the 1-1 correspondence between points of the real line and infinite decimals, his comment that all absolute convergence tests result from comparing with a known convergent object - either the geometric series or an integral, and his preface emphasizing "the chief task" of one who would pursue the study of Science: acquiring a firm grasp of the application of general principles in particular cases.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Calculus book
This is the best calculus text for aspiring physicists as well as applied mathematics students. However, don't know why Amazon sent the book with different front cover to me. It's not the one shown in the picture but rather a black cover--exactly the one seen on barnesandnoble with the same isbn. Although the covers are different, the content is the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars Calculus From a Practical Point of View
I like this book because I hate limits. From a strict mathematical point of view limits are standard for explaining calculus. But from a practical point of view (physicists, engineers, economists) the notion of the infinitesimal may be the most appropriate. It's worth noting that Thompson's degrees of smallness are an accurate reflection of the theory of nilpotent infinitesimals described in "A Primer of Infinitesimal Analysis".A combination of these two books might make for a great introduction to practical and alternative-theoretical calculus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't be afraid of maths.
If all maths teachers explained maths as clearly and gently as Mr. Thompson, very few, especially the ladies would no longer say I can't do maths. We are desperatly short of mathmaticians in this country and this usually starts when at secondary school level.
5-0 out of 5 stars The concepts of calculus as clear as possible
A topic as complicated as calculus can be approached in many different ways, each appealing to a different kind of audience at a different level of understanding.I began my second college career as a physics major and consequently had to take calculus.Despite a firm grasp of precalc algebra and trig, I didn't really grasp the concepts at an intuitive level, which is necessary for facing anything other than very obvious problems cooked up for the occasion.Calculus Made Simple offered me a window into the crucial concepts and let me enter the mindset needed for tackling calculus problems.I read the original version without the benefit of Martin Gardner's improvements (I am sure he did a spectacular job) so I am not sure about the new version, but the writing did seem a little dated at times. It didn't bother me, but I know for others who might already be turned off by having to learn calc, it could just be another detail that pushes them away.A more modern approach is How to Ace Calculus, which I also found useful.Be warned, though, for those about to take calculus for engineering and the physical sciences, these books deal with grounding you in the most basic nuts and bolts of the subject. The problems you encounter in, say, the Thomas's calc textbook become waaaay more complicated than what you get in these guides.Regardless, I give the book high marks and hope you find it helpful too. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars useful text for an undergrad course
Hilariously, I found this book in a local library, in the section devoted to primary school and high school maths. I guess the "Algebra" in the title suggested this location to some librarian. Anyhow, not to worry. I informed the library and they will reshelve this book in a better place.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for an introductory abstract algebra book
This is a great book. It's introductory, appropriate for undergrads taking abstract algebra for the first time, but at the same time, it is also very comprehensive, useful for graduate students.Although it explains the material in great depth and at a relatively slow pace, it does so in a logically sound manner so that it can lead the reader to develop mathematical maturity.Like many more advanced books, it has good cross-references, helping people to develop connections between the different parts of the material, and allowing the reader to jump around once she has mastered the basics.
2-0 out of 5 stars too wordy
This book is a standard one for graduate-level algebra courses.I practically wore mine out over a year-long course, and came to know it intimately.Dummit and Foote is a book that teaches via wordy explanations and lots of examples.Of course, examples are very important. However, the explanations are often muddled and not clear (e.g. see tensor products). They frequently relegate important theorems or definitions to the exercises, and the organization is poor.Consequently, it can be very hard to find things later when you might need them. Also, the bindings on this book frequently fail.My book fell apart very quickly, and I know other students who had the same problem.I recommend Rotman's Advanced Modern Algebra instead of Dummit and Foote. ... As mentioned, this book is amazingly compact, cramming three semesters of calculus and a bit of ordinary differential equations into just 800 pages. That conciseness also implies that much explanatory material and many illustrative examples are missing.
1-0 out of 5 stars Vision and Perspective lacking in general; An average Student.
I agree that this book stinks,

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Math Textbook
This is one of the best math textbooks I have come across. I used this book for two graduate level courses in Linear Algebra and found it wonderful. Strang divides Linear Algebra into 2 halves - the first half revolves around the solutions to the equation Ax=B and includes vector spaces and orthogonality. The second half is about eigenvalues and positive definiteness. The two halves are connected together by determinants. The book is very informally written and the author places emphasis on intuitive understanding rather than just proofs and equations. Highly recommended along with Strang's video lectures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Linear Algebra book to supplement Prof Strang's Video lectures
Well, this book has a peculiar feature. It seems to be a good book when read alone. But if one reads this book along with Prof. Strang's video lectures from OCW MIT, it becomes the best book for linear algebra. The best way to learn a new subject is to learn from an authentic source. I strongly believe in the complete authenticity of this book to enrich Linear Algebra knowledge in the reader. This book is an exceptional resource for any engineering student irrespective of the discipline. I wish Prof. Strang writes more books on related areas and supplements them with his thoughtful video lectures.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is worth the Wronskian of two linearly dependentfunctions
I am sure he is an amazing mathematician, but I found this book to be the most horrible linear book I have ever seen. The text that was bolded and italicized was inconsistent and therefore very confusing especially in a book which employs bold face to denote specific mathematical qualities. Furthermore, the conversational style and lack of fluidity had a synergy that would drive even the craziest mathematician crazier. I would reco Lay's or Pooles or Bronson's (this might be my favorite because it is proof intensive). Again, he is a better mathematician than I will ever be, even if he was wasted, but I would not reco this book to any first semester linear student, go for one of the aforementioned authors. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not good.
I used the James Stewart 5e for the first quarter for calculus. But I switched schools and this school used the Hughes Hallett book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Simply awful!
Let me start by saying that many will think this review is "not helpful" and I don't care.
2-0 out of 5 stars Falls short where it counts
