5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on interest rate models
This is the best book available on interest rate models. Very detailed. Much more focused and readable than Rebonato's book. More pragmatic and explicit than Musiela and Rutkowski. Not as theoretical as Hunt and Kennedy. James and Webber also looks very good, but I'm not that familiar with it. All other books have only bits and pieces on interest rates.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I have read on the subject
With all the due respect to the other authors I would say that if one is interested in a good theoretical book whihc is also good on the implementation side then the book of Brigo and Mercurion is definetly the best book I have ever read on the subject. 5-0 out of 5 stars New stuff and nice overview: hard to beat!
In the late nineties I went through Brigo's innovative work on stochastic nonlinear filtering with differential geometry techniques. I was favorably impressed by results and style, particularly in his dissertation and in his 'geometry in present day science' very readable overview. Interesting results are found and nicely told with accurate -but not pointlessly complicated - advanced mathematics for the problems at hand, I reasoned. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great math book to own
The book has a great structure. It connects well to bring a person to advance his math skill into college-level.The structure is great and easy to follow. The proofs are clear.Different from most of math textbooks where examples are easier than exercises, this book provides the same level of difficulty on both.Although the author starts skipping proofs in multivariable calculus, he explains the reason. My recommendation is that he tie-up the structure in multivariable calculus portion. It definitely will be a 5-stars book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Calculus Bible
If you need to buy one calculus book... buy this one. It's got everything you will need for learning basic calculus.I was referring to this book constantly, both while taking basic math, and in more advanced courses in physics and engineering, when I would need to go back and re-learn how to integrate a particular type of problem.I was actually quite shocked to see that the last several reviews rated this book quite poorly... everyone who took math with me using this book loved it.Then again, we were all engineers, so we wanted to be doing this kind of stuff. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars You have to start somewhere...
Tobey and Slater's 'Beginning Algebra' text is used by my college where I tutor mathematics in the first course in Algebra, often the first course in Algebra many of our students have ever taken. It is very much a beginning course, as the course itself carries no official 'credit' (it is a zero-level course, as a prerequisite to other science and mathematics courses, that many students place out of on the basis of assessment scores).2-0 out of 5 stars You can do better than this!
This widely-acclaimed textbook by Tobey & Slater is a valiant attempt to make elementary algebra both interesting and anxiety-free. I have been using this textbook [both 4th and now 5th editions] to teach in over 30 classes so far at aRead more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book if you have the solutions manual
I bought this book for self study. It has ton's of examples that really help out. But like some of the other reviewers have pointed out... the book can be extremely confusing at times. That's when i reach for the solutions manual that goes with it. It has a step by step break down of the odd numbered problems. The break down's aren't 100% complete and they skip a lot of the algebra parts, but it shows all the calculus stuff.
4-0 out of 5 stars Just because the subject is hard doesn't make the book bad
The majority of complaints about this text tend to be biased towards people who 1) have problems with the material w/o this book 2) HAD to take the class and didnt do well 3)have never seen what else is out there for calculus text
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best!
I underdstand that calculus is a very complicated subject and most people who have had to study it don't even want to remember about it. I guess that is the reason why this excellent book is not admired very much. However, it IS and probably will continue to be one of the very best introductory courses. I give it 5 stars because I don't think that there is a book without any weaknesses but in this case they are negligible. Overall this is a very good book and I highly recommend it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A chaotic way to (not) learn math
Algebra 1/2 is deeply flawed in its approach to learning. I don't recommend it for anyone. While it claims to take an "incremental" approach, it doesn't introduce and build on new concepts in an orderly fashion, as you might expect, given the title. Instead, it takes a "shotgun" approach, with the student getting hit with new BB-sized factoids almost at random.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply The Best Math Book Ever Written
As my 11 year old son begins his second semester of Calculus at our local college, he tends to take exception with parents that look down on the Saxon series of math books, with them often calling the books "boring" or "repetitive", as if math is intended to be loaded with excitement from day 1.Getting good at something, whether it's cutting lawns or learning pre-algebra, take practice.I just feel so bad for the kids with these parents, as the kids will never amount to anything, given that environment.Simply put, the Saxon series of books, if completed per their instructions (i.e., doing every problem), assures that your kid will NEVER have trouble in math.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Very Helpful
If you are looking for an encyclopedia of all things pre-calculus, then this is your book. Just don't expect it to teach you much if you don't already know the material. There are plenty of practice problems, but the actual "teaching" sections don't really help the average student like me. Some of this is offset by the DVD's included in the course pack, but not enough so to justify the $200.00 the book and course pack cost at the university bookstore. You would probably best be served by using a different book like Precalculus for Dummies or the Complete Idiots Guide to Precalculus.

1-0 out of 5 stars Never read it, but...
I'll admit, I have never looked at this book, but Michael Sullivan's other Trigonometry book is very bad. No specific exampels, vauge explanations. If this book is anything like his old one, dont get it!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars prolific problem sets
In his latest update of this text, Sullivan takes the reader through a high school or undergraduate level course in algebra. Though the title says "College", all of this material is also eminently do-able at the high school level, for advanced students, aspiring to major in maths or science. While at the university level, it appears to be targeting those students not majoring in maths, physical science or engineering.

2-0 out of 5 stars not realy helpful
It is okay, if your teacher is terrible this will help A LITTLE. Honestly, this book tries so hard to make calculus interesting that it ends up making it worse. The examples are useless. The explanation of limits is so confusion. It barely spent 2 pages on continuity. I don't recommend it, its not "user friendly". I am going to buy another book because this one failed to meet my satisfaction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Further adventures with algebra...
This book is currently being used by the community college where I tutor as a book for the internet version of Intermediate Algebra, a course that most of our two-year degree programmes require as part of the mathematics requirement, and one of the most 'popular' courses at the tutor centre.Because this book is used by the internet course, it has to be well crafted to enable students to learn from on their own, and indeed, it seems to pass muster on that account.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's actually worth the huge price tag
I was turned on to Stewart through his excellent multivariable calculus text. Having been so impressed by that book I decided to fork out the bucks for the this text. Yea - I know - the material in this text is a pre-requisite to the other but I own a kazillion mathematics books and at this point in my life, I've been through various levels of Calc so many times that order is irrelevent. Anyway, for me, this book is really worth the huge price tag. I frequently open it up and read it for pleasure. Sick, huh? But it's that good! Stewart is great at chosing examples to work out fully for your eddification. He also is great at selecting interesting and illustrative problems that aren't presumptuous of the student's abilities at clairvoyance (unlike some other textbook authors I could mention). Lastly, the everything about this book reeks of quality: from the mathematical content (btw - it has excellent graphics!) and Stewart's obvious underlying teaching abilities to the physical characteristics of the binding and page materials. The book is a jewell.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Calculus Book
I've learned calculus long time ago, but recently I need it to read a financial book. This book worked for me.I am surprised to know that calculus is easy due to the book's step by step explanation. This book is good not only for readers who learn calculus for the first time but also for poeple who have some experiences.Depneding on your level and purpose, you can read this book like a novel or do all exercises.Only problem I can think of is that this book may not be suitable for people who need to learn pure mathmatics because definitions are not so strict.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear and understandable.
At the beginning I was a bit worried about the way the book explains the material. It seemed too simple for a book dealing with more complex subjects in math such as functions, trigonometry and analytic geometry. Then again it could be said that this quality is the one that makes the book such a joy to read.
5-0 out of 5 stars reviews for the 7th edition?
why are the reviews for the 6th and 7th edition of this book the same?is there no difference between editions, such that reviews for the 6th should be kept for the 6th.the 7th edition might have changes that could cause some to review/change a viewpoint about its content.maybe at the core they are the same book/method, but it is overall a different book and the reviews should be kept edition specific.
5-0 out of 5 stars well designed for self study
I taught 2 sections of precalculus with this book last spring. This book is well designed for self study. Examples are keyed to specific exercises so the student is directed to use a concept immediately after seeing it employed in a suitable exercise.

1-0 out of 5 stars New edition for what???
Calculus is an old problem, but new editions of the same material keep coming up. Calculus will not change, the way it is presented and explained can. At least to a certain amount. But just changing the sequence of exercise-numbers for each section, and moving sections from one chapter into another chapter, does not -in my opinion-warrant a new edition.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for Intro Calculus Course
This book clearly explains the different mathematical techniques of Calculus and provides great problems for practice. It shows a step-by-step process of how to perform different techniques and explains how and why they work, which is probably the most important facet of actually learning calculus. In other words, it breaks down a daunting subject into something easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook for calculus; well-written.
I have been a fan of Roland Larson's math textbooks, as they have always been very clear and the practice problems always make sense. I was recently stuck in some calculus courses which used the calculus textbook by James Stewart, and that book is a nightmare! Fortunately, my multivarible calc prof prefers Larson's book, which is what we use in class. Very good book; I recommend it much over Stewart's. Also, do note that the odd-exercise solutions are posted for free online at Roland Larson's website, which is given to you in the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Mathematics Book
This book makes this branch of Mathematics fun. It reads well too. I understand many of the concepts because the presentation is well constructed. Good reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book
I like this book and use it for teaching my students. As a teacher, you have the opportunity to select similar problems for class activity and homework assignment. Also, you can find not only simple and middle-level problems but also high-level problems to provide a good source for active students. Unfortunately, the author uses the letters "F" and "T" in the truth tables instead of much easier and perspective "0" and "1", which correspond to the real needs, e.g., in computer science. That's the most essential lack, which I've found by this time.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is interesting

I have "accidentally" seen parts of the video during a local PBS fund drive. It intrigued me so much that I started looking on the internet for details.I found the right source, Amazon, and purchased the book and video.
4-0 out of 5 stars NTSC compatible now.
I had a concern about whether the DVD was NTSC compatible as I had read in the reviews that the CVD was in the PAL format and one review that the DVD was now in the NTSC foormat.

1-0 out of 5 stars too expensive
the content of the book is same as international edition which is avaible on ebay why pay this much instead of 55 dolar.

3-0 out of 5 stars its okay
I would say this book is a little bit beter than average. The text is okay and the examples are relevant. The pictures really are relevant but generic. What it could use is some more real world examples. Stuff you might see in your engineering or science classes. Most of the examples are fairly generic.I am happy that I could use the same book for three semester too. I thought getting the student solutions manual would help.It doesn't go into as much detail as I like. The odds aren't always like the evens you do for homework either. I guess overall I think the book is good but a little on the bland side.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed With 11th Edition
I have no idea why the publishers of this book felt the need to update to the 11th edition. The organization of the topics made more sense and was in line with the traditional breakdown of the three semester series of calculus classes. In particular, the section layout in the new edition may force a student who used the 10th edition in first semester calculus to repeat material if they had to switch books for second semester calculus, perhaps at the cost of other material.

1-0 out of 5 stars Finite Mathematics for Business Economics, Life Sciences and Social Sciences (10th Edition)
They sent me the wrong book. I ordered theFinite Mathematics for Business Economics, Life Sciences and Social Sciences (10th Edition)by Raymond A. Barnett and received the solution manual. I feel very disapointed with this purchase.
1-0 out of 5 stars NOT USER FRIENDLY!
I am using this textbook for my Math for Business and Economics class and it is terrible. This book is not written taking into consideration the audience "Business Majors". Concepts are better explained in the Chapter review than under the sections they are being presented. There is only 1 example for each new concept and definitions are written using one or two definitions of new concepts within it.If this book is intended to take the student from the abstract concept to the real world it sure doesn't do this.I understood the material better in my Intermediate Algebra class than I do now.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sound choice for a finite math textbook
This is a very sound choice as a textbook for a course in finite mathematics. The coverage is appropriate, the level suitable for the non-math major, the explanations are excellent and the authors take the title seriously. Read more

    Editorial Review

This is the standard text for introductory advanced undergraduate and first-year graduate level courses in signal processing. The text gives a coherent and exhaustive treatment of discrete-time linear systems, sampling, filtering and filter design, reconstruction, the discrete-time Fourier and z-transforms, Fourier analysis of signals, the fast Fourier transform, and spectral estimation. The author develops the basic theory independently for each of the transform domains and provides illustrative examples throughout to aid the reader. Discussions of applications in the areas of speech processing, consumer electronics, acoustics, radar, geophysical signal processing, and remote sensing help to place the theory in context. The text assumes a background in advanced calculus, including an introduction to complex variables and a basic familiarity with signals and linear systems theory. If you have this background, the book forms an up-to-date and self-contained introduction to discrete-time signal processing that is appropriate for students and researchers. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Destined for a standard?
It is my pleasure to comment on this book which I recently purchased. I have two of Dr. Oppenheim's previous books. This book is a core integration of a topic with too many diverse starting points (mine was digital filters derived from Prony's method, not in the book by name). Dr. Bose was my first EE Professor. Alan Oppenheim was my second EE instructor. Alan (just finished MSEE at the time) had not published a book yet, but his focus was always on your questions. His product was your understanding. If this book is for your shelf, it will not harm it. If this topic is for your mind, this book was meticulously written for you.Lance Webb, PhDEE

5-0 out of 5 stars Six star book on Digital Signal Processing
This is the outstanding 2nd edition of Oppenheim's classic DSP book, which for over two decades was the only real choice for a textbook on the subject. That was too bad, since the first edition was probably the worst thing I have ever seen in print - terse, incomprehensible, and with only a few awful and poorly illustrated examples. When I decided to take a refresher course in DSP, I was horrified to see our class would be using the second edition of that horrendous text. What I found instead was a completely rehabilitated textbook! This is not a beginner's DSP textbook by any stretch of the imagination, but absolutely everything is explained and there are plenty of well worked out examples. The end-of-chapter problems are broken down into simple, intermediate, and advanced problems with quite a few mind-puzzlers in the advanced section. Plus, the answers to the first 20 problems in every chapter are in the back of the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good book from initial reading
I haven't gone through this book all the way yet since classes haven't started; however, it seems to be a very well written book that is easy to get the necessary concepts out of easily.Once the class is done I will try to add a further review. ... Read more
