2-0 out of 5 stars Examples and problems constructed by inexperienced students
I have a master's degree in Electrical Engineering.I tutor students who are using this book in a community college course. In layout and in format, the book is very good. The concepts are presented in logical order, and the principles are usually explained well.
3-0 out of 5 stars Precalculus Only
You are looking for a college algebra book for self-study, review or as a supplement to an assigned book, I presume, and not to buy 50 for a college classroom.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great, but Packaging needs improvement!
I am very pleased with the process. The book that I ordered was correct and sent promptly. The only problem I had was with the packaging. It came wrapped in plastic ONLY!That caused the book to get damaged corners and dents. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Confusing Text Book With Errors In Reference Section
There were many formatting errors in this book, such as the glossary columns being switched around-"G" doesn't belong in the middle of the "F" vocab. Some of the page #'s listed in the index were not correct. If you must use this book then you should know that the info can normally be found close to the page listed in the index. The figures/tables were very useful and restated the text in an organized manner, which helped the flow of the writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Biology -- A Guide to the Natural World
I found this book to much easier to read and understand from all theprevious textbooks assigned to biology courses. The graphics and tablesand examples are completely explained. The format asks questions andanswers them in a simple, easily understandable text -- not like the mumbojumbo that a person would have to read over and over to finally understandits meaning. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Art of math?
If you read the other reviews of this book, you might end up thinking, "Are they talking about a math book, or a piece of art?"It might well be both. This book ended up in my hands as the result of a book drive at the office where I work (staff donate books, I sell them, proceeds go to a charitable fund).I ended up buying it.I'm 45, and I'm a psychologist; algebra is not something I use on a regular basis. This book is just so well-made (illustrated, organized, well-explained, comprehensive, rational, realistic), that I could not just let it go by.It made me want to take a math class.

5-0 out of 5 stars The very best.
This book is perfect. It explains every problem, and unlike most Algebra courese, it prepares you for whats coming. Books like the MaGraw Hill Algebra books just give you a problem and expect you to know how to solve it. Margret L Lial works you up to it, so when you get to the big equations you will actually know how to do them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beginning Algebra, Ninth Edition by Margaret L. Lial
This Beginning Algebra book by Lial is, without a doubt, the best elementary Algebra book I have had the pleasure to use.As a tutor of middle school through college level, I have used several Algebra texts from the bigger textbook companies to several homeschool favorites. This text builds logically and has clear and accurate explanations.Concepts that should be learned by heart and rote are highlighted. There is also a plethora of practical application problems which, afterall, is what math is all about - one needs to be able to apply and use the concepts in everyday and career situations. In short, it is easily understood by the self-taught, as well as a delight to use in a teaching situation. There is ample drill and practice to solidify concepts and routines.I'm sticking with this one. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The book is easy to understand.
I am a computer science student (well, recent graduate), and am looking to sell similiar books.I used both this book and the Fundamentals of Physics by Halliday/Resnick/Walker.Frankly, I thought this book was very easy to understand (much more than Halliday/Resnick/Walker).I'm not sure how you could want to be a mechanical engineer but not do well with this book.I thought they made it very easy to understand and perhaps spent too much time re-explaining what was covered in a earlier chapters but you can easily skip those parts.A slightly more challenging book was the one by Halliday/Resnick/Walker because it relied more on calculus (at least my professor did) but it too was fairly obvious.I recommend either book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Knight's Physics Volume 1-4
My first two semesters were devoted to going throughKnight's Physis's program course. The course is an attempt to provide the answer to the question: "How do you provide a physics education to a class body of 240+ students."Comparatively the textbooks were considered to be average.I would agree with the other reviewers that they tended to be "wordy" and the conceptual explanations were lacking. Many authors stress that learning physics can only be accomplished by working problems.A lot of the example problems lacked a clear explanation. I had a routine habit of referring to Serway Physic (3rd. Edition) to get a better understanding of the problems. The twice a week "online" problem assignments were extremely tedious and much of the time was devoted to the frustrations ofinputing answerson the website's graphical user interface.I provided responses to many problems and never received a word from Knight's online program representatives.Ifelt that a lot of valuable learning time was wasted with incorrect alphanumeric symbolic input.Students alway had complaints about the connection between the online problems and tests.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect book to reintroduce algebra
I used this book in my first back-to-college algebra class, and it is a great book. Easy to understand explanations and step-by-step instructions made algebra way easier than I remembered! Please note: the companion solutions manual has many wrong answers. The book itself, however, is great. If your class is using this book, you will do well.

5-0 out of 5 stars best math text I have ever used
I wish he had written all of my text books.Everything is clearly laid out with examples that are broken down into small steps to make understanding even clearer.

3-0 out of 5 stars good as primer
It is readable and has an enjoyable way of teaching. It is a mix of the basics concepts and results, but not quite well organized regarding the logical flow of a math presentation. Anyway, I recommend it. As the next book for a beginner (or even the first) I recommend Barboianu's book "Understanding and Calculating the Odds".

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book to Study Multivariable Calculus!
I'm a math major and it was my first course that I took to meet the math requirements. I had assignments almost daily but we didn't go over the assignments deeply in the class. Therefore, I had to self-studied a lot and I actually got more help from the Student Solution Manual of the book. This book is very concise to read as well. I always think that if I paid more attention in this text seriously, I would do better in the class. I suggest to buy the solution manual book together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superlative
This book covers all the standard vector calculus material. What sets it apart is the pedagogic skill of the author. It is very carefully written and motivated, with clear worked examples for each new concept. A student could work through this book independently.
1-0 out of 5 stars INCOMPREHENSIBLE!!!
Hope and pray that your professor is awesome, because the explanations in this book are absolutely incomprehensible. Also, some of the hints in the exercises are ridiculous, such as "Be careful when you do this" and "Think carefully"!!! Is the author implicitly saying that the rest of the problems can be done while being careless, or what?

5-0 out of 5 stars A+ For End of Chapter Problems
I had used this textbook at Ramapo College of New Jersey for Organic Chemistry I and II, and I found that the end of the chapter problems were superb in preparation for exams. I can't say much otherwise about the body of the text, reactions, mechanisms, etc., but I give this book an A+ for the End of Chapter Problems. They were tough and required a good amount of thought, which was exactly how I was tested in this class.

I did not have the luxary of an instructor guide me through problems and have my questions clarified in class.I took the class online and I had no problem inderstanding how to wrok out the problems. It goes into detail on how to work out problems and gives examples step by step. There are also a lot of practice problems in the text with odd numbers answered for review. The CD in also a great learning advantage with some of the chapters with E-professor.Excellent to walk you through your stats course.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not ideal for planning biomedical studies
I have found it very difficult to identify a good book on study design for the biomedical industry as most are too focused on engineering/manufacturing applications.Though this book does discuss many different study designs and their theoretical underpinnings well, it does not do a very good job of explaining the issues of sample size and power. These issues are critical to designing studies in biologic settings.
5-0 out of 5 stars Long-awaited update to a classic
This is the best applied book in any scientific or mathematical subject that I have ever read. The reviewers who are looking for equations and the typical assumptions-theory-proof presentation just picked up the wrong book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not recommended as a text book
As a text book, this book will drive students crazy. Despite the typos which can be found not occasionally, I found the authors wrote most of the examples using large paragraphs but hard to comprehend.Pretty often the results they generated comes from nowhere. No clear deduction, some times even no equations, just tell you some meanlingless number. The authors must have treated students as experienced as they are, therefore they omit most of the important details for a student to follow. Obviously, by using computer software, they can easily get answers from problems they made without bothering write down how they can get it by pencil and paper.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gathering Heat
It has been estimated that the earth was formed about 4.5 billion years ago and that human beings have inhabited the planet only about 10 to 12 thousand years - ever since the thawing of the last ice age. During our relatively brief time on this planet, we have been fortunate to enjoy moderate temperatures. However, according to Tim Flannery as well as many other students of climate science, the consumption of fossil fuels such as oil, coal, and wood is releasing so much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere that the earth is now warmer than anytime in the last 650,000 years. This is common knowledge to people who read and listen to the news. What is interesting about Flannery's well-written and well-researched book is that he describes in detail the consequences of a few degrees in temperature rise. If the earth's temperature rises a few degrees thousands of species and ecosystems will die, a few more still and it will kill off the human race.

5-0 out of 5 stars Headspinning Cutting-edge Physics
"Warped Passages" is a summary of some of the breakthrough theories in physics. And Lisa Randall, who's been at Princeton, MIT, and now Harvard, surely is the perfect person to be our guide. With her breezy, anecdotal, learn by example style, she takes some of the most (to me) arcane and mysterious facts about her areas of expertise--particle physics, string theory, and cosmology--and summarizes some theories that maybe will answer the questions of what is the (our? this particular?) universe like, and how is it structured?
5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Read
For anyone with an inquiring mind as to what makes the universe tick, "Warped Passages", is a must read.No wonder this book is rated 4+ overall by 90 reviewers.
1-0 out of 5 stars Tedious, makes a fascinating topic bo-ring!!!!
I picked up this book expecting to gain some new insights about the bleeding edge of scientific research, string theory, and model-building, but found it unbelievably tedious, self-congratulatory, and self-absorbed. There may be little doubt that author Lisa Randall is a brilliant physicist, but her explanations of the last 100 years of science and her theories are muddled and poorly written. I found myself longing for a writer such as Bill Bryson to explain half of these theories. In addition, one of most annoying features of this book is the way Randall tries to disguise her inability to explain advanced physics in straightforward terms that would appeal to the lay reader by starting each chapter with a pop culture reference, usually a lyric from a band such as Metallica, as if such a reference will be enough to goose the reader awake and take interest in the next muddled exposition. She even has footnotes that explain the American term "runway" is translated as "catwalk" in the United Kingdom -- oh, thank you, Ms. Randall, for such elucidation! Why not make this book more interesting and readable with a more engaging style that explains these fascinating theories in a clearer manner? Not to give away the ending, but many of these theories about extra dimensions cannot even be proven unless the universe demonstrates another massive outburst of energy almost equivalent to the Big Bang. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars BEST ORGANIC CHEMISTRY BOOK
I have read and used many books on organic chemistry, both on my BS and graduate degree programs. This book has been the best ever written on the subject. The authors have treated the subject to its simplest detail to be understood by everyone. Now that I am a practicing chemist, I always look at this book as a reference. The presentation is very good and the way the chapters are organized is very neat and arranged. The topic on synthesis in action and retrosynthetic analysis is very interesting. What I find very nice are the topics on the application of the chemical principles on real life synthesis. The information are all up to date. Stuart Warren and his co authors has gone a long way and their expertise is shown in this wonderful book. Warren has been one of myfavorite chenistry authors way back to his simple books on chemical synthesis and retrosynthetic analysis. I recommend this book, not only to students, both on their undergraduate and graduate programs but also to practicing chemist and chemical engineers and all those who love and find the field of chemistry a very interesting subject and those who wants to find chemical knowledge at a glance. Truly, this is a one volume Encyclopedia on Organic Chemistry.

4-0 out of 5 stars Used in MBA program - Intro to Stats
I did not have much statistics background while in undergrad or through my job experiences and found this book to be quite easy to understand. The problems at the end of the chapters were quite useful in that they seemed applicable to the real world.I thought the most useful section was on regression so if you are interested in learning about that topic, this textbook is quite useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book with good cases
Very good text book with very useful and practical real cases, which make the boring theory interesting. I think it is very useful for my job and daily life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Effective text for students and anyone wanting to brush up
This is a very readable and useable text for undergraduates, business students, and general readers who want to learn or brush-up on basic statistics. There is a tremendous amount of information in its 1200 pages, but it is well laid out, amply illustrated, with lots of practical work. The answers to the odd numbered questions are provided in the back to aid self-study.There are several appendices that provide important tables and the methods for calculating important statistical formulas. The index is also quite helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Was very useful for algebra review
I needed to brush up on my algebra after some years away doing other things, and had three evenings for that. I found this text very helpful (but I had to spend five evenings in the end). First, it emphasizes the operator view of linear algebra, as opposed to the matrix view; second, the solved problems start with several concrete numeric examples and then move on to proving theorems, so you get practice in both; and third, it is reasonably abstract and succint which saves time if you know the subject but need a quick review.
5-0 out of 5 stars Better than my texbooks
I have learned more about Linear Algebra from this single book than all my other assorted (and fairly expensive!) texbooks combined; and, for that matter, more than my college class on the subject too. I'm now studying Differential Geometry and I always have this book nearby (in addition to two other Shaum's Outlines: that of Vector Analysis and Differential Geometry). Every textbook has something to offer - at least I usually give them the benefit of the doubt ;-). But for gaining a "working knowledge" of abstract mathematical concepts, there's nothing so enlightening than studying the details of problem solving performed with delightful clarity by an expert in the field. In this book you can become the apprentice to Seymour Lipschutz as he reveals the mysteries that often form clouds in the minds of students of Linear Algebra.Frequently, when working in this text, I would suddenly understand something that seemed so complex or obscure in my other LA texts. Actually, I could then see what those other texts were attempting to convey but because of their particular styles, they were just a bit "pedagogically challenged" :-)
3-0 out of 5 stars Decided not to use it because of too many typos
Regrettably I can only give a partial review of this book. From some of the other reviews, it looks like this may in fact be a decent text, but the number of errors I encountered in the answers to the first set of problems was so annoying that I decided not to continue using this book.By the third addition I would expect most errors to have been corrected, but that is not the case here. The errors I ran across appear to be mostly typos, and I can understand a book having some typos, but to have so many in the first set of problems was enough to make me look for another text.Another reviewer mentioned that the errors were obvious.True, they were, but it was still annoying and a waste of time to have to deal with. Also, the errors were obvious in the first chapter because it was all review material, but what about later chapters when the material would not be a review? It just wasn't something I was willing to risk.I've given the book a neutral three star rating since I can't thoroughly review it, but I'll let you decide if it's worth it to give the book a chance. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I liked it
I had to buy this book for my Quantity Foods course as a part of my Dietetics major. I actually liked the book, and I am going to keep it for later use. I thought the book was organized very well. Some of the charts in Chapter 2 and 5 that we used quite often were a little hard to find (because there are so many!).
5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!!! A must have for all chefs
I had seen this book at a friends business and thought it was good.Since I have ordered and received it I have had the chance to really review the contents and find it one book that I can use daily. The CD rom is also fantastic in the number of recipes it contains. One nice feature is that you can size the recipes to what you need.Another great plus.Well worth the money. 1-0 out of 5 stars College Physics 7th ed.Serway Faughn Vol.1
This is the most poorly written text I have ever used. I bought the student solutions manual also which I thought might help me understand the concepts, but to no avail, the solutions manual jumps from Problem #5 to #21 in one chapter?? Forget about the examples on the text they are totally confusing and don't show you how they arrived with the solution.I am no dummy. This book will make you have low self esteem, thats the way I felt.I have a physics tutor who also said this book makes physics even harder to understand.I trully feel sorry for the student that has to buy this book because the school requires it.I had to buy a bootleg CD with the teacher's solutions on it to fully understand this text!We shouldn't have to do that.

1-0 out of 5 stars The average speed of learning with this book is 0 m/s.
This book is not at all helpful when trying to learn physics.By the time you get done trying to figure out this book and it's examples, you'll have pulled out all your hair.So my advice to if you're going to use this book is shave your head now to save yourself from the pain later. In all reality, I haven't learned anything from this book.It is very disorganized and the chapter problems are rediculous...what makes it better is the examples in the chapter don't correlated but with only a couple of chapter problems.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not in my worst nightmares...
I have hated textbooks before, but this one takes the cake.It is quite possibly the worst one that my professor could have chosen. The authors use such a wild mixture of mind-numbingly simple content and obscure, abstract concepts that the picture that they paint is, to put it bluntly, incoherent. They dance around the definition of vocabulary words, always coming close to defining stuff (but never actually coming out and *saying it*), contradict themselves repeatedly, and assume that the reader understands half the concepts before they are even introduced.Perhaps the most irritating thing about this text is the fact that there is *no* glossary to speak of--if the reader doesn't understand the sketchy definition in the chapter or chapter summary, too bad, because that's all you get! Steer clear of this book, if at all possible. ... Read more
