5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I found this book a very readable, concise and useful introduction to probability.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Intro to Probability
I am a university student taking a probability course and found this book to be invaluable.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide
This is an excellent introductory guide to anyone interested in probability. The book is written with a general audience, but there are some examples that are specific to information and communication theory. I'm especially fond of the challenging problems at the end of the book. The language is lucid, and the concepts are explained in a very clear and logical fashion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Mathematics Book
This book makes this branch of Mathematics fun. It reads well too. I understand many of the concepts because the presentation is well constructed. Good reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book
I like this book and use it for teaching my students. As a teacher, you have the opportunity to select similar problems for class activity and homework assignment. Also, you can find not only simple and middle-level problems but also high-level problems to provide a good source for active students. Unfortunately, the author uses the letters "F" and "T" in the truth tables instead of much easier and perspective "0" and "1", which correspond to the real needs, e.g., in computer science. That's the most essential lack, which I've found by this time.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is interesting
I like the exclamations and the concepts/problem solving this book teaches.Maybe I am being swayed by the subject because I enjoy it, however, in comparison to other math books, this one livens it up and is a higher then the average mathematics book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive book for General Topology
This is the text that my first graduate level topology class is using.Over all I find it very well written. The author uses good examples for motivation and explaination of the topics he covers. The exercises are also well thought out and instructive. They're challenging enough to make you really learn the material, but not so hard as to sway the only average mathematician from the subject.I highly recommend this book, even if it's not for your class. It'll be a welcome reference book to add to your math text collection!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good standard introduction to topology, useful book for textbook, self-study, or reference
This book is pretty much a standard. It has a number of strong points. It is self-contained relative to students even at a fairly elementary level. There are a lot of exercises, and they are appropriate. And, the book is very comprehensive and thorough, covering a lot of material and covering it in good depth. Most of the material is exceptionally easy to read.
5-0 out of 5 stars very clear introduction

5-0 out of 5 stars We Should All Be 1/4th John Semour
The book is everything you could wish to know from beginning to end.The ONLY criticism I have with the book is that is seems to be for one specific climate in England.I'm not quite sure how to translate a lot of it over to a New England (USA)Winter setting. Regardless of that, it's a miracle to have such a book in this day and age.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I have read this book twice now. I was amazed at the amount of topics and the detail of each. I would highly recommend this book to people who are looking to start out, or who are only able to read about it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Notfor Dummies
Now if I were a dummy, and in many ways I am, I would be furious with this book.It doesn't mention until page 4 that the author assumes you've already had a year of algebra. What if I hadn't?What if I was picking up this book because I wanted to learn algebra from scratch? Most anyone would naturally assume that's what this book is for.But right away you'd be lost.Even the "fun facts" would make me heave this thing out the window.Info about "three-term quadratic equations" is a fun fact? Not if you're a compleat dummy and you haven't the foggiest what this woman is talking about. The 2 stars are generous. It's not too bad for an overview of something you already know and merely want to to remember.Thank my stars I do know algebra, but damn...dummies beware.

2-0 out of 5 stars BUYERS BE AWARE 8th Edition Published
Fall 2004 & Spring 2005 Students: the 8th edition of this book is published and comes with a CD, and, in some cases, a free world atlas. Check with your instructor for requirements. In any case, I wouldn't spend $100 for the 7th edition.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very well-written and illustrated text with great photos
Obviously written by authors who have a deep appreciation for this subject and a desire to pass on their knowledge, this text is useful not just for students of physical geography, but for anyone wanting a deeper understanding of geopolitics, area studies, anthropology, world history, etc. For example, I would have no clue about the culture, history and politics of Central Asia/Afghanistan and vicinity (my area of interest) without having a comprehensive understanding of the physical terrain and climate of this region--and how its inhabitants have adapted to it. I would not have gained this understanding without reading this text.5-0 out of 5 stars still on my bookshelf

1-0 out of 5 stars missing alot of detail....
Wow, I am really suprised this book garnered as much positive feedback as it has. I am a nursing major, and I was apalled at the lack of detail in this book. I ended up using the A&P text from my 201 class for the majority of this class. Maybe it was the questions my instructor asked, but I constanatly had to go to other sources in order to find the information I needed. If anyone finds themself in this situation, Ken Saladin's text by the same name is the best!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best A&P book for nursing majors
This is a required reading text for anatomy and physiology I and II at the college I attend, and I have nothing but praise for the author and illustrators of this book.It is as comprehensive as A&P can get, and as difficult as the material is to learn, it is broken down into systems so that it is not too overwhelming.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
I bought the book the first time because I had to.I bought it the second time because I wanted to.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not good when compare to Chang's Chemistry book
This book made me confuse. Not clearly written.
5-0 out of 5 stars Clearly written, richly illustrated, and well organized text for a one year general chemistry course (or self study)
This is an interesting text for a one year general chemistry course. While all general chemistry texts form major publishers have some convergence so they all cover similar basic material, they all have different organizing ideas. What I enjoyed about this text is that it has a clear organizing principle: the periodic table of elements.
2-0 out of 5 stars it s not the best and certainly not even good. just bit below average
I have read 2 other chem book and found this book is my least favorite.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book for TS
If you are thinking of mastering TS this is the book to start with. Do not get intimidated however with all the symbols and notations, the author does a pretty good job explaining each and every equation. A seperate book is needed for application eg RATs handbook by Enders.

4-0 out of 5 stars A review of Time Series Analysis
The book provides a good overview of the analysis of time series and it also gives a good treatise of the economitric background of the use of estimation methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most careful ecmtx textbook I know
As you may guess from the title, I loved Hamilton's book. I must definitely disagree with all those who find it too technical. Rather on the contrary, I would say. Admittedly, entire pages with greek letters look intimidating at first glance. But what Hamilton actually does is making a huge effort (unlike most of his competitors) to actually explain the details of the derivations, thereby helping the reader a lot. You'll learn to appreciate this a lot by the time you start developing sth. on your own rather than simply applying existing techniques.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good learning version
This affordable version of SPSS allows students to learn how to use SPSS without investing a large amount of money on the full version ($600 or so). This version is limited in the number of variables and cases it can store, so students looking to perform serious analysis would be better off to purchase the SPSS Graduate Pack.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for graduate students
Unfortunately I didn't see the part about the student version being limited to 50 variables and 1500 cases until I'd bought it.The class I'm taking uses far more variables than that.I am wiser now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Book that i bought.
Partial Differential Equations (Graduate Studies in Mathematics, V. 19) GSM/19 (Graduate Studies in Mathematics)
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for an introduction to PDE's for a graduated student
If you're looking for a book to learn PDE's at a basic level, please don't buy this book. In the other hand, if you have already worked on this subject it's not surprising why the book doesn't include some topics or techniques. The appendix is for remembering basic facts while you are reading, so if you don't acknowledge this subjects, you have to study them before (you can't ask a book to have an appendix that covers all the related theories you need). There are several books which cover very well the classical theory and the linear cases in the weak sense. As one of the reviews says, this is an excellent book for a GRADUATED COURSE so it is assumed you have a basic background on the subject and you know what you should know about other subjects such as analysis. The book has the basic tools forTHE NON-LINEAR CASES which can't be seen in a basic course. If you don't believe me, try to find a book which cover the same content in such an easy way.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book opened a new world for me
After several bad lectures I had already almost given up on PDE. But when I got this book into my hands, I was immediately drawn into the subject and couldn't put it down until I finished it completely. After less than a month I felt how a new world had opened up to me, and I can since feel its effect when I go to lectures.

3-0 out of 5 stars too long
This book REALLY needs an editor. It is just too long. Mr. Diamond goes over the same points over and over in excruciating detail. My solution was just to skip paragraphs detailing exactly how to carbon-date pinecones for the 20th time.
3-0 out of 5 stars questionable from the beginning
I haven't yet finished the book, but have found reason to doubt the Mr. Diamond in the preface and prologue alone. In the preface, Diamond states that the readers are not about to read a "racist treatise" and that the book doesn't "involve human racial differences at all."Skip a few pages to the prologue and Diamond postulates "Why did New Guineans wind up technologically primitive, despite what I believe to be their superior intelligence?"Is New Guinean a race?Maybe, maybe not... but reverse the statement and then see how the critics chime in.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not as compelling as "Collapse" but a good read nontheless.
Diamond presents a look at the evolution of various Cultures throughout the World and how geography has played an important part in their developement. The reason that Eurasia and North Africa evolved more highly developed (technologically anyway) cultures was that there was a wider variety of wild plant and animal species that could be tamed by the humans living in those areas following the Ice Age than there was available to humans in other parts of the world. This enabled people in these areas to develope farming societies (which required more specializations than hunter gatherer societies) more quickly than in other parts of the globe.

5-0 out of 5 stars 'this friendly guide puts the FUN back in physics FUNdamentals!'
so i'm actually reading this book right now prior to doing some hw, and i just had to stop and write a review for this amazing book.i'm in an low level mnechanics course right now, and this book covers all of the key concepts, and from what i've read (which is a fair amount), it does a very nice job of reinforcing the topics we've covered, breaking them down to the basics.i was afraid this book wouldn't be of much use concerning the mathematical parts of physics, being a guide of sorts for the layman, but there were plenty examples of mathematical reasoning (although i've spotted some times in which the particular derivations from one formula to another aren't present, which isn't particularly bad, since if you're in a phys course you should be able to trace the steps, and if you're not, there's really no reason to be concerned, right?).alas, i'm not sure how much use this book will be for someone in upper level courses, but i'm sure it will retain its value as a reference source.believe it or not, this was actually an entertaining read.highly recommended. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Great reference, Bad textbook
This is actually a very good book to read - what they cover, they cover in depth, building each concept up from elementary concepts so you can always see how they got from point A to point B.The authors present mathematical proofs of essentially every assertion (although, as is typical of "discrete math" proofs, the proofs can sometimes be a tad on the silly side as they sometimes just restate whatever they're trying to prove - blame academia). The algorithms are all presented in a language-agnostic pseudocode which highlights the essentials of the algorithm itself without burdening the reader with language idiosyncracies.Plus, if you want something more concrete, the latest edition comes with a CD-ROM including all the algorithms implemented in Java!
4-0 out of 5 stars A great reference
This book is not for the casual reader. If the contents seems confusing at times it is because there are hard problems being analyzed.Any book on algorithms that is not confusing at times is probably not discussing any interesting algorithms. While quite academic, this book is also relevant to any engineer who needs to design/optimize a non-trivial algorithm. It's also one of those books that one can open up to any random page and start reading.Sometimes when I get coders-block, this is just the thing to break me out of it.This book is heavy, expensive and well worth its weight and price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important Book
This is an excellent book. Well written, easy to understand, precise, good problems, excellent coverage of the basics. This book can provide an excellent foundation in computer science.
