5-0 out of 5 stars Further adventures with algebra...
This book is currently being used by the community college where I tutor as a book for the internet version of Intermediate Algebra, a course that most of our two-year degree programmes require as part of the mathematics requirement, and one of the most 'popular' courses at the tutor centre.Because this book is used by the internet course, it has to be well crafted to enable students to learn from on their own, and indeed, it seems to pass muster on that account.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars prolific problem sets
In his latest update of this text, Sullivan takes the reader through a high school or undergraduate level course in algebra. Though the title says "College", all of this material is also eminently do-able at the high school level, for advanced students, aspiring to major in maths or science. While at the university level, it appears to be targeting those students not majoring in maths, physical science or engineering.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of cancer biology
This book provides a comprehensive overview of cancer biology. Excellent as introductory text for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate student. Written by a lasker award winner and one of the pioneers of the molecular biological study of cancer. The accompanying CD has intersting supplimentary material especially the videos that add to the utility of the book. The accompanying poster lists the most common interconnected pathways in cancer. Highly readable and uptodate. Highly recommended for purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars The State of the Art as it is Known Today.
This textbook, aimed at the advanced undergraduate and graduate biology and medical students covers the basic biology of cancer at the molecular andcellular level. Research into cancer in many different directions has been continuing at an accelerated pace since about World War II. In 1975 a major breakthrough was made by H.E. Varmus and J.M. Bishop on San Francisco. The result has been the creation of the new branch of biology covered by this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Myth under the guise of 'science'- A warning from a professional logician
If you want to read a Classic of Western Mythology, look no further. This is specious philosophy under the guise of a supposed 'truth' about reality. The tragedy of all this is noticing other reviewers' comments about how the contents of this book negatively influenced their lives.Dawkins belief that we are machines created by our genes is a misleading view of reality, and when evolutionary 'science' catches up with evolutionary 'philosophy,' this view will come out false. This could only be taken seriously by those who are so blinded by the details that they can no longer think straight, so they are not able to figure out where the argument is wrong, let alone realize something IS wrong with it.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Work
The Selfish Gene is a seminal work in the field of evolutionary studies. This book is not a simple read, but it can definitely be read by the layman interested in the subject. But be warned, you'll have to concentrate. The primary purpose of this book, in my view, is not to explain or defend evolution, per se, but to explain and defend a particular aspect (or flavor) of evolutionary theory:that is, that the Gene is the primary "unit" of selection. This is not universally accepted among scientists, but Dawkins does an excellent job making the case. I, for one, am convinced. Other views include multiple levels of selection, such as the one championed by Stephen Gould. Gould argues that selection occurs at almost every level:gene, organism, species, genus, clade, etc. Gould likens DNA to "bookkeeping". The debate is interesting and worth pursuing; even Darwin allowed for special cases of "group selection" to account for social insects (ants, bees, etc.).
4-0 out of 5 stars A classic, but nothing new here if you read the 2nd ed.
My only complaint is that, unlike the 2nd edition, which greatly expanded on the 1st edition, including some very useful and clarifying notes by Dawkin's addressing much of the controvery his first edition created, this aniversary edition does not include any new material, other than a new forward. If you are interested in reading this book, a used second edition copy is as good as this one (skip the first edition -- lacks the last two chapters and Dawkins' comentaries).

5-0 out of 5 stars Provides many links between these functions and composer effectiveness and strategy.
THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON MUSIC could have been featured in our Health Shelf section, but is reviewed here for its importance to musicians and any interested in music. It's the first to provide a comprehensive scientific analysis of how people experience music: chapters blend psychology, neuroscience, and musical examples from classical to rap to explain different facets of music and how they are perceived by the brain. Lest you think this overly scientific, it also provides many links between these functions and composer effectiveness and strategy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating: Music listening as a personal tour through labs, studios and living rooms
Dan Levitin's "This is Your Brain on Music" is a rather unique book. I don't know any other book that bring together personal anecdotes from the music recording world, a wealth of current insights into how our brain allows us to even listen and enjoy music to the more arcane problems of how we structure our ideas into categories.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not good
This book is carelessly written and edited, with a surprisingly large number of factual errors and misstatements of various kinds.I had high hopes for it, but I came away disappointed, even angry.Although there is some valuable material (p. 187 is great), too much is unacceptably sloppy. The music-theoretical explanations tend to be simplistic and misleading. Some are wrong.Trouble starts early, with a definition of "the A minor scale" as "the one minor scale that uses only the white notes of the piano keyboard."But this "natural" minor scale is not analogous to C major in the way Levitin is implying. The observation that Beethoven's Fifth "restates a melody using different instruments" trivializes a sophisticated musical language."Shave and a haircut" and "Gee Officer Krupke" are not the same rhythm, though Levitin says they are. (They're related, but not identical; it would have been illuminating to discuss the difference.) Mozart did not write "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" at age 6 (or any other age) though he did composevariations on it.(Levitin's claim that the stress pattern in this tune is TWINkle twinkle LITtle star is peculiar, or at least highly debatable.) The definition of a "whole note" as a note that "lasts four beats" is unhelpful. The claim that 6/8 is a "somewhat common meter in which we count six beats to a measure and each eighth note gets one beat" will be news to most practicing musicians, for whom this meter normally has two beats.Schoenberg is lazily called a "contemporary" composer though he died in 1951.The note C is defined as the "dominant" note of a piece in the key of C, which is bound to confuse anyone who is subsequently taught what a "dominant" is.Another problematic sentence:"Musicians refer to the pleasing-sound chords and intervals as consonant and the unpleasing ones as dissonant."But this is not what musicians understand by consonance and dissonance.Levitin's analysis of the slow movement of the Haydn Surprise Symphony doesn't jibe with the music; he says that "the main melodic idea spans barely more than half an octave, a perfect fifth" -- and so what? -- but the first 4 bars cover an octave, and the first 8 bars an eleventh.Another puzzling sentence: "There is nothing intrinsically catlike about the word cat or even any of its syllables [sic]"And what about the author's dismissal of "attempts to please the audience through musical obsequies [sic] rather than through soul." I cannot imagine a classical musician who would not wince at "Many of the greatest musicians of our era lacked formal training.... in classical music, George Gershwin, Mussorgsky, and David Helfgott are among those who lacked formal training..." Leaving aside the "unmusicality" of the repetitive writing, it is time to stop exploiting poor David Helfgott, who, however much he suffered personally, is not considered "one of the greatest classical musicians of this era" by any serious practitioner.Levitin must be a more responsible researcher and sincere music-lover than this book suggests, and I'm sure his intentions were good.Perhaps Levitin's editor is more to blame than he himself is. The objections I've listed may seem niggling. I've listed them for two reasons: 1) it would take too much space to discuss larger issues, and 2) I think such mistakes are evidence of the book's overall carelessness. Some books I would recommend instead of this one are more technical but also more stimulating and informative, notably Music and Memory by Bob Snyder and the recent Sweet Anticipation by David Huron.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Product!
This is a good book for studying biology and would recommend it.The price was exceptionally low as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Book for high school, not worth themoney
This book goes into explaining Hardy-Weinberg principle and doesn't even have the equation for it! Nor does it mention two important words in the same chapter - dominant and recessive. If you want to look at pictures of animals and read over-simplified explanations then buy it. If your are looking for a scholarly book, then I would suggest to look elsewhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too much "fluff"
The major problem with this book is that there is so much unnecessary paragraphs which can just be said in a couple of sentences. This book is only good for those who have major trouble grasping the concepts and are in need of a mass amount of analogies and metaphors. If you are looking for a Biology book straight to the point, this is not for you; a better book is "Inquiry into Life" by Sylvia S. Mader. Once I read "Inquiry into Life," I found that "Biology: Life on Earth" was too drawn out. It is also not as detailed as I had expected it to be. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I feel educated every time I use this book...
This is a great book!! I'm an English Lit. major and wanted to focus a bit on science and got myself this book. It's so wonderfully written! It explains very clearly and it has a CD-rom with excercises. Even if you're not taking an intro-biology course this book is useful and easy to use for self study. The book is devided into theme chapters and covers about everything you can think of in the natural world. It's no doubt a very good introduction to further study in biology. I feel educated every time I use this book!
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book For Class
This book will definitely get the job done. I just needed a book for my class and this works out great. It was in good condition and didn't have any highlighting marks in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Fifth Edition Brings Everything Up To Date
This new Fifth Edition of an old standby. The book retains it's aim of engaging students from a wide variety of majors in the wonders of the living world. It relates the basic concepts of biology to concepts in every day life, to evolution, and to the process of science.

5-0 out of 5 stars Feynman had succeeded
Said to be THE classic textbook for physics. It is, period. Highly recommended for any serious science student as a reference (it does not contain problem sets though). Suitable for self-study, the book covers a broad range of topics. But most importantly, Feynman brought those topics to life! The reader will come away enlightened, and in awe with the workings of the universe.

4-0 out of 5 stars Repetitive at times but lots of enlightening information.
Some beginning parts of this book are a little repetitive, if you've been through a teacher credential program. However, I found lots of useful information that I definitely think can be incorporated into any curriculum.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking, Critical, Essential
With respect to some of the previous reviewers, I really don't think they have done justice to this book.I'll completely expose my inner geek and admit that curriculum design is fascinating to me, and add that I own a considerable number of books on the topic.I am particularly interested in differentiating curricula, and I purchase books about educational theory and classroom ideas the way other women purchase shoes--insatiably.I have constantly challenged myself to create personalized lessons with meaningful learning goals throughout my teaching career, but I will say that this book has definitely changed the way I view teaching and curricular design--and for the better.

5-0 out of 5 stars You don't need to be afraid of Statistics
This is a very friendly statistics book.It is easy to read and understand. The authors also throw in some humorous comments now and then that is something you wouldn't expect to find in a statistics book and this seemed to help with the reading. Many real world business examples are used in the book. The example problems and the end of section or chapter problems are from different areas of study such as business, political, social sciences, and science. This is great for understanding how to apply statistics in real life.I would have to say that all the topics and formulas are explained very well.In some cases there are more then one way to write a formula and Sanders and Smidt makes a point of giving you both formulas. You can decide which formula works for you.The book comes with a CD loaded with the data files for all the problems so you don't have to spend time keying in data. There are copies of the data files come in a variety of formats such as Minitab, Excel Windows, and Macintosh. For most of the example problems the book takes you through the steps using Minitab Statistical software and the TI-83 graphing calculator. You are not only learning statistics, but you are also learning how to use Minitab and the TI-83 graphing calculator. In this day and age if you are going to do statistics you need to be able to do it with a computer.I wish they would have also included examples using Microsoft Excel, which more people are apt to have then Minitab. Personally I use both Minitab and Excel. I actually enjoyed reading this book and looked forward to studying.Even though my statistics class is over this book will not be collecting dust for a while as I plan on going back through it to reread or finish reading what I missed or skimmed over. There are still a lot of the problems that I want to do to reinforce what I have already learned. This is a great statistics book to keep as a reference. More then once I have found coworkers looking up stuff in my book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's actually worth the huge price tag
I was turned on to Stewart through his excellent multivariable calculus text. Having been so impressed by that book I decided to fork out the bucks for the this text. Yea - I know - the material in this text is a pre-requisite to the other but I own a kazillion mathematics books and at this point in my life, I've been through various levels of Calc so many times that order is irrelevent. Anyway, for me, this book is really worth the huge price tag. I frequently open it up and read it for pleasure. Sick, huh? But it's that good! Stewart is great at chosing examples to work out fully for your eddification. He also is great at selecting interesting and illustrative problems that aren't presumptuous of the student's abilities at clairvoyance (unlike some other textbook authors I could mention). Lastly, the everything about this book reeks of quality: from the mathematical content (btw - it has excellent graphics!) and Stewart's obvious underlying teaching abilities to the physical characteristics of the binding and page materials. The book is a jewell.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Calculus Book
I've learned calculus long time ago, but recently I need it to read a financial book. This book worked for me.I am surprised to know that calculus is easy due to the book's step by step explanation. This book is good not only for readers who learn calculus for the first time but also for poeple who have some experiences.Depneding on your level and purpose, you can read this book like a novel or do all exercises.Only problem I can think of is that this book may not be suitable for people who need to learn pure mathmatics because definitions are not so strict.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear and understandable.
At the beginning I was a bit worried about the way the book explains the material. It seemed too simple for a book dealing with more complex subjects in math such as functions, trigonometry and analytic geometry. Then again it could be said that this quality is the one that makes the book such a joy to read.
5-0 out of 5 stars reviews for the 7th edition?
why are the reviews for the 6th and 7th edition of this book the same?is there no difference between editions, such that reviews for the 6th should be kept for the 6th.the 7th edition might have changes that could cause some to review/change a viewpoint about its content.maybe at the core they are the same book/method, but it is overall a different book and the reviews should be kept edition specific.
5-0 out of 5 stars well designed for self study
I taught 2 sections of precalculus with this book last spring. This book is well designed for self study. Examples are keyed to specific exercises so the student is directed to use a concept immediately after seeing it employed in a suitable exercise.

2-0 out of 5 stars I dont like the book
I dont like the way the author describing things. Somtimes its way is quite obscure/abstract, very general. sometimes I am feeling that I am reading "sth-sth-sth-sth", so at last I am not impressed at all and does not remember it very well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!
This book deals in depression and was one I truly needed. It has helped me so much words can't describe. An excellent book.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you need help with managing your emotions, this is it
I have had issues dealing with past emotional pains and while I have not yet gone through this whole book, I am definately finding help and a greater understanding of my problems through the portions that I have gone over.I cannot wait to finish this and to see my complete transformation from a person who just floats from mood to mood without taking resposibility for them, to a person who is aware and is taking responsibility for her emotional destiny.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Overall
Pretty thorough text for anyone learning or brushing up on their skills...quite intuitive.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of the best business statistics book
This book is used in the course of Business Statistics at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. This is a useful and understandable book. The questions are well-prepared.Also,the statistics program PhSTAT is given with this book. I advise you to buy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good, but could be better
This book is okay, but it could definitely be better. For a basic statistics class, this book contains WAY too much information to digest in a semester of college. No professor I know of has ever gotten past chapter 8.Further, the problems are quite wimpy as far as the amount of thought required for them.Quite wimpy.Could be better. The only good thing is that for doing it on a spreadsheet, the data comes on a CD, so that you don't have to re-type it, thankfully. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book
A good, "deep" and complete presentation of quantum mechanics. The first chapter is great for basic ideas of QM. This is followed by a chapter on the mathematical tools of quantum mechanics and a very good chapter that lays out the postulates of quantum mechanics. Then it covers spin, the harmonic oscillator, angular momentum, and the hydrogen atom. It seems to me the book is the best around for teaching Dirac notation and matrix mechanics. Each chapter is accompanied by appendices that develop further detail or provide examples of various concepts. For help with problem solving, I recommend Quantum Mechanics Demystified and the Schaum's Outline of Quantum Mechanics. For a good reading companion, I recommend the Griffiths Quantum Mechanics book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, and clear
I do not understand the reviewers who claim this book gives no exercises or good examples. These books are about the only graduate-level QM books which do. Not only that, they explore more interesting/complex material in their "complements" at the end of each chapter. This is far more than can be said of a book like Sakurai's, say, which is also a standard text.
5-0 out of 5 stars The gold standard
This two volume set on Quantum Mechanics not only teaches the advanced undergrad or graduate student all that is important in quantum mechanics in its various formulations, it is replete with practical, real world applications in the special sections at the end of each chapter.
