5-0 out of 5 stars Handy reference
I didn't have this book during my P3 (3rd year of PharmD school) year; we used the text by Kradjan that had a patient-based format. DePiro's more traditional format makes it easier to find info quickly. The downloadable format of this text (which comes with the book) makes it even faster to find info. A downside would be books like these are out-of-date as soon as they're published, but I've been using the DePiro just fine for my P4 clerkships and plan to use Kradjan's as a doorstop. (I'm not really a kid)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for a great price
I received my order fairly quickly and the book was great. I would definately order from them again.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Standard by Which Others are Compared
It's difficult to write a review of this book because most of the people who are even thinking of buying it have probably used it already. They have seen it in the library, their professors have shown it to them, or it is required for the course they are taking.

2-0 out of 5 stars Get the 10th edition.
I can't say that I'm pleased with the new edition. The information is grossly disorganized, there are no introductory chapters, and important information has been omitted or dumbed down, e.g. the section on fat-soluble vitamins, specifically vitamin A.
5-0 out of 5 stars A complete Pharmacological Encyclopedia
This book is a complete pharmacological encyclopedia from its days of inception. It is useful to any physician as a desk reference.
    3-0 out of 5 stars A rehash
I am a physician, and recently used the previous (10th) edition as an overview for a presentation I was preparing on opioid analgesics. We just got our new, 11th edition, and I embarked on a comparison of the chapters. To my astonishment, despite the considerable ongoing research in opioid pharmacology, the chapters were practically identical, with the new edition providing NO substantive new information.I cannot speak to the rest of this venerable reference, but this chapter was just a rehash (and a big disappointment). ... This is a great book.I love how it isn't just about the drugs, but gives background on the diagnosis that you are treating.I think it is layed out well, and find it very useful.I notice a lot of pharm students are reviewing this but I think it is good for practitioner's as well. However, don't think this will fit in your labcoat pocket, it could but it is sorta heavy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text
I found the information quite thorough. It is written in a user-friendly way, easy to understand.I bought this book because it was listed as a reference for the chiropractic practice part 2 exam. This book helped me with the locations of the trigger points.Sometimes the chiro boards like to ask questions on trigger points. However, Leonardi's book: National Board of Chiropractic Part II Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers and National Board of Chiropractic Part III Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations are excellent for board exam preparation. These three books are needed for the part II and Part III of the boards.

5-0 out of 5 stars Single best reference I have
Being a hospital pharmacist and former pharmacy resident at a very well-known tertiary care center, I have found the DI Handbook to be the single best resource I have. There are other reference books that provide more complete information or are tailored to a specific topic, but I don't think there is a better general drug reference book that is as easy to carry as the DI Handbook.I use it daily in my practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great prescription drug reference
As a pharmacist, I regard this reference as one of the best. The drug information as well as the reference charts at the end of the book are complete, yet succinct. I use this resource daily.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Essential Portable Drug Reference
I am a clinical pharmacy specialist on an internal medicine teaching service.I have found that Lexi-Comp Drug Information is by far the most user-friendly, yet comprehensive of the portable drug references.Drugs are listed alphabetically by generic name, so there is no fumbling through indexes and listings by class when information is needed quickly, e.g., on rounds with the medical team. The topic headings under each monograph are extensive and thorough, and there are a number of useful appendices in the back of the book. There is a joke in our facility that this book is surgically attached to one hand of all the clinical pharmacists. This is the book I keep by the phone at home when I am on call, and the reference I recommend to my students to bring on teaching rounds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I am a MA student and I bought this book to do PDR's for my classes. I am able to find all the drugs that I have to look up and it is a great book in that it's easy to read and understand when looking for the Indications, Contraindications, Dosage & Forms, etc. I recommend this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple & clear
I feel like this handheld software was worth my money - as a nursing student it is useful because it explains the action, dosage, side effects, contraindications, pharmacokinetics, and nursing considerations. It is more basic and complete than some other software that I have - in this way it is helpful for my needs. However, Mobipocket is a bit clumbsy and I wish it was easier to navigate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use
The reason I chose to purchase these drug reference books for the county jail I work for, is that the text is very easy to use.You do not have to look in the index in the back of the book if you already know the generic name of the drug.A great majority of theprescribed medications are in generic form and this text is in alphabetical order, not by drug class, which many other texts use.My correction officers as well as I are very pleased with it! It makes our jobs much easier!

5-0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars for poor portability
I rate it 4.5 stars only because this book is way too big to carry to class--it's like putting a baby in your backpack. On top of the syllabi you have to lug around, the weight is ridiculous. In terms of the actual content, it's an excellent desktop resource. All drugs are organized by disease state. Literally, the drug Bible (tissue paper pages and all). I recommend it for at home/pharmacy use only, otherwise you might need a forklift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Applied Therapeutics
Not just a drug reference, this is a clinical book.... teaches critical thinking and application of drugs, recommended by many PharmD's. You'll use it for ever.

    Editorial Review

Pete Egoscue learned a lot about pain when, as a Marine officer, he waswounded in Vietnam. He segued from patient to physical therapist, and now runs afamous clinic in San Diego, where he claims he's helped 95 percent of his patients curechronic pain--including Jack Nicklaus and Charles Barkley, whose athletic careers hehelped prolong. At the heart of his program are stretches and motion exercises to restoreproper function to muscles and joints. His methods are often surprising andcounterintuitive. For example, for foot pain, he suggests a series of hip exercises. In fact, this is one of the most startling books you'll read about the human organism. Egoscue hasstrong opinions about how modern life is changing the way our bodies function, reducingthe tasks we must perform and thus reducing the functional range of motion of ourmuscles and joints. Fortunately, he offers movement exercises to restore what naturemeant us to have. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Miracles do happen!
I am an athlete who has had a chronic low back problem for twenty years. I exercised regularly utilizing exercises from the best physical therapists and chiropractors in the Los Angeles area. These exercises and stretch routines barley made a dent in the regular back pain I experienced. The day I received Pain Free I read the book cover to cover and did the chronic pain exercises. It was like a light switch was flipped in my back. I have been almost pain free for the last year since reading the book. The major test for me was whether I could return to running. Having been a marathoner before my back problem I had never been able to run regularly without severe repercussions. I now run three times a week with no repercussions and each week I am increasing my mileage. The maintenance exercises are great and they keep my back well.
3-0 out of 5 stars After Long Term Use
I have practiced the material in this book diligently for the past 8 months, and I think that sets me apart from the many who review this book after shorter use.The methods described in the book offer short-term relief positions for those in pain from musculosleletal problems. They are not unique, as yoga and physical therapy help in a similar fashion. They did not cure my back/disc related pain. Egoscue's claim that 95% of people doing these excercises will recover in a week is absurd, and his theories, though interesting, are unproven.Who is to say that his "successes" would not have recovered naturally in time?Having said that, I do think the book can give comfort to those in pain, but don't expect a cure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some simple exercises can really help
I have just begun to get through this book.I quickly went to the section on back pain and tried the isometric exercises involving squeezing a pillow between your knees. Results were immediate and very beneficial. My back is feeling better than it has in years. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview
There is a very good reason this series is endorsed by the NPTA.Of the six or so books that I used to study for the exam, this was the most helpful by far.It reviews every topic on the exam, and is a great starting place to see what you need more work on.This is the book that got me a passing score on the exam, and I don't really think I can give it higher praise than that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great workbook
This book is a great study guide to prepare for the certification exam. The book is easy to read and it leaves out all the fluff that is in the other study books. After reading and doing the practice exams I found what my weaknesses were and was able to go back to my schoolbooks to strengthen those areas. I took the certification exam this month (March) and think I did fine; there are a lot of math questions in the exam and wish I spent more time in that area.

This is a very enlightening book that every woman should read, no matter her age.It will help the reader to become informed about their bodies and how they react with and without the proper hormones. It should also help the woman discuss issues with their physcians and help them to decide the type to hormone replacement they would like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful
I have read many books on human identical hormones. Dr. Randolph offers a helpful, and slightly different perspective on the benefits of this kind of HRT. If you are interested in getting a view from a medical doctor who truly understands what women and men go through with hormonal fluctuations, you will want to add this book to your collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, but the same as the older edition
Lippincott Pharm is a fabulous book for medical students. It has the basics clearly outlined and nice tables to help you memorize them. The text is brief and clear. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it seems to be identical to the older edition, except that the little diagrams are in color. It's a lot more expensive than the older edition (millennium update edition) though! Take a look at the two together before you decide whether you want to shell out the money for the newer one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
This book is amazing..Its so easy to read and so easy to understand. Goes through the chapters smoothly, providing all the information needed. Its especially helpfull to students but also can be used as a reference book. Most importandly, the illustration is impressive!!The tables, drawings, sketches and little pictures make it easier to memorize importand concepts and basic information and thus can make pharmacology fun!!

As a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine I can attest to the value of this book's information. It is a fantastic reference book and provides practitioners with detailed formulae descriptions, analysis of formulae and is invaluable to any Chinese medicine practitioner.
    4-0 out of 5 stars Bensky's Formuales & Strategies
This is a classical book about Herbal Formulaes. I have read it several times and consult it often. I believe Strategy refers to how an herbologist will be able to use the book to add or modify ingridient and dosage. Unlike the review I wrote for "Material Medica", I find this is a useful book with much needed information to come up with a prescription. Needless to say the translation of this book is choppy in many places. The authors can keep the terms more to the point. These flowerly terms used is a minus.
5-0 out of 5 stars No contenders
The fact that no real contenders have emerged in more than 13 years since this book's publication is sufficient testimony to its quality.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good for IM residents
The only weakness is that there's no machanism of the meds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent pocket drug dosage reference
I am a resident physician and I find this book indispensable. It is the best reference for carrying in your pocket in order to look up drug doses. It has some other useful information such as pregnancy category, brand names, relative cost, peds dosing and other small but useful features. Nice index. I use this book several times a day every day (well, every work day), and it is the one book I make sure is always in my pocket. I use the classic T-shirt edition - it fits in the top pocket of my lab coat so nicely.
5-0 out of 5 stars always a valuable purchase
I use ePocrates for most of my minute to minute drug referencing but tarascon still has good information, especially less common brand names for common drugs and also very convenient other stuff like the dermatome diagrams. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Nurses Best Friend
While working as an office RN I am often asked by a patient questions about the "new" medication they are on.This book provides the answers. It's easy to read, each drug is broken into quick to find sections and it is very up-to-date.Don't practice nursing without this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Nurses
This is one of the best drug guides I have found. It contains everything you need and then some. It also has a handy cd-rom with tons of information on it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting into the nitty-gritty chapter of your life
This book immediately gets into the nuts & bolts of the pharmacotherapeutics with cool questions plus amazing rationales. My advice? Study your school lecture notes & review this book at the same time and you'll be amazed at what you've achieved in a month's time.

3-0 out of 5 stars questions too indepth compared to the NAPLEX
I've been out of school for 14 years and erroneously believed the NAPLEX was more clinical than it was 14 years ago. I just took it in July 2005 and I can NOT believe how basic the questions are!!! this book will give you a good idea of your area of weakness. The few "clinical" questions in the NAPLEX were so elementry, I can't believe I wasted all that time and money on APHA's plus Appleton & Lange pharmacy review questions book as well as Kaplan's q-bank questions. I've been specializing in oncology for the past few years and I was not familiar with any of the new drugs on the market. Of the over 2000+ "test" questions between all 3 study aids, there were about 5 in my NAPLEX. I do a lot of calculations in my area of practice so I guess the study aids can help those who need help in pharmacy math. There were quite a few calculations in the "clinical" part. If I had taken this test last year without "studying", I believe I would had done just as well. If you were awake while practicing or in school...the NAPLEX is a piece of cake. There were quite a few 120+ scores.I wish someone would had informed me.
3-0 out of 5 stars Get A Real Review Book Instead
This book is great for quizzing you so you know what subjects to brush up on. THe CD can also get you used to the CAT format. But having taken the NAPLEX after using this book and several others, you will never see these questions on the NAPLEX. The chances of seeing the same question is almost zilch. Its better to know your key subjects well (HTN, DM, HIV, etc) then learn facts here and there about everything. That's what this book does for you. Its a compilation of specific questions. I recommend a review book such as APHA's Comprehensive Pharmacy Review, or Kaplans Naplex review instead. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Terrible binding
The binding of the thick and heavy book is terrible. Many pages just fell apart about one month or so after I bought it. Also, I found there are some problems with its organization. For example, it is kind of confusing to describe both benzodiazepines and barbiturates together.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Awful, Not Great
There are many good things to say about this text. It is through, has great cross-references, and is relatively cheap. Sadly, however, that is pretty much where the positive ends and the negative begins.
1-0 out of 5 stars Awful
This text is required at my medical school. The text is dense and unapproachable, but that isn't my main complaint-the organization is TERRIBLE. One drug can be covered in multiple different chapters, but none of the chapters really have a great description! For example, B blockers are covered under "Autonomic Drugs", "Anti-Hypertensive Agents", and "Heart Failure Drugs"... just for starters! Anywhere you can use a B blocker, there's a separate discussion. Just give me ONE chapter on B blockers that actually talks about all of their uses!
