5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Text
If you have been dabbling in cognitive psychology and brain science, have found it interesting and are looking for a broad yet in-depth treatment then this book will not dissapoint you.It approaches Neuroscience from every possible angle: you will learn about the anatomy and physiology of the brain and how it produces, controls and mediates the sensory, motor and emotional functions that underlie human experience. The layout of the text is logical, it uses great pedagogical tools, and the writing is concise and informative (if a little dry).Highly recommended as a first textbook for serious study.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Brief Review of "Neuroscience"
I just finished using this book for an undergradutate Neurobiology class at Harvard University, and found it to be very informative. It has a number of diagrams and illustrations, and clearly describes various aspects of neuroscience in great detail, but in a comprehensive manor. I recommend it to anyone pursuing a career in neuroscience.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a definitive resource
This book has had praise heaped upon it by previous reviewers.I'd like to put that in perspective. As an undergraduate text or a general encyclopedic reference for the unitiated, this book is reasonably comprehensive and contains substantial high-quality illustrations. However as a reference for more advanced students, there is insufficient detail to motivate serious discussion.I find "Principles of Neural Science" by Kandel, Schwartz, and Jessell far more useful despite being a year older than Bear, et al.If the goal is to lift artwork for a pleasingly graphical PowerPoint presentation, this book is a fantastic resource, but if you want more than jargon and an introduction to the topic (albeit comprehensive), I'd look elsewhere. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I am not educated in psychology, but I found this professional-level book easy to read and very informative.McWilliams looks at various personalities like the sociopathic, paranoid, hysterical, etc.She explains the defense mechanisms that lead to the various personality types.Although this book is written from the standpoint of pathological personality types and is intended for use by professionals and psych students, after reading this book you will have a greater understanding of personality quirks of family, friends, and co-workers.Well-written and very informative, even for the "armchair" psychologist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent read for beginning & experienced mental health clinicians
McWilliams clearly has a degree of mastery on the subject. It is quite easy to write about this topic in manner that overcomplicates the subject (as many do), but rarely do I encounter an author who is able to present the information in a highly readable, accessible & integral manner. It is appropriate for experienced and beginning therapists alike. This is a book that any clinician ought to have in their library and you will find yourself referring back to it over the years.

5-0 out of 5 stars not only for students
As an engineer who just wanted to get some insights in the field of psychoanalysis this book is doing a great job. It is easy to understand also for people who did not enjoy any psychological education before. It might just be the best way to get a good first overview of modern psychoanalytical models. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars some great advice for maintaining sound health
I think this book will be a pretty good resource for anyone searching for information regarding ways to ensure that their health is in top form. It shows them to how go about choosing the proper doctor, insurance companies, and treatment plans. Additionally, readers are also supplied with information on how to deal with a miscellany of ailments and conditions consistent with someone who is of less than sound health. Some examples are inclusive of, but not limited to, cat allergies, turkey neck, diabetes, heart disease, back pain, amnesia, and much, much more.

4-0 out of 5 stars It supplies the information on health everyone should have
Michael Roizen helps you learn how your body works and how to get in touch with it. The only criticism I have of the book is that Roizen advocates a special diet, rather than focusing on what your body tells you what it needs. None the less, This book is your own owners manual for your own body. To be healthy you have to understand all of the various bodily functions, not just the dogmatic views other books discuss, and what you need to do to keep everything running smoothly and remain and maintain a healthy state.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I did not consider myself a smart patient or an educated patient before I read this book, but know I feel that I have a better understanding of my health. It told me when I reach this age I should take this test. Not only did it tell me what, but it also told me why I should take the test and what I should expect (pain) from the test. This book it worth 3 times what I paid for it and the revenue is going to charity! Another great book for smart patients is`Can We Live 150` by M. Tombak. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the wards and the NBME shelf
This is a must have during surgery clerkships. It's broken down into concise chapters that can quickly be reviewed (5-10 minutes) before a case or a conference. For example, we had a right hepatic lobectomy case on a patient with hepatocellular carcinoma. I spent about 20 minutes in the physicians locker room reviewing the liver chapters before the case. In surgery, I was easily able to answer nearly all questions from the staff surgeon and the chief resident. Most pimp questions can be found in this book. This book definitely gives you an edge on the clerkship. It provides fast access to many pertinent concepts that you'll need day in and day out on the wards, in the SICU and in the OR. Many pocket textbooks are just dead weight in your coat. This one is actually very useful.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pimpin' ain't easy...
But Surgical Recall makes it easier.Basically, people get Recall for two reasons:1)they're not interested in surgery but have to rotate and do well in itor 2)they're genuinely interested in surgery.
5-0 out of 5 stars of unlimited value to house officers
whether you're planning to specialize in surgery or not, it is invaluable for you.

1-0 out of 5 stars missing alot of detail....
Wow, I am really suprised this book garnered as much positive feedback as it has. I am a nursing major, and I was apalled at the lack of detail in this book. I ended up using the A&P text from my 201 class for the majority of this class. Maybe it was the questions my instructor asked, but I constanatly had to go to other sources in order to find the information I needed. If anyone finds themself in this situation, Ken Saladin's text by the same name is the best!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best A&P book for nursing majors
This is a required reading text for anatomy and physiology I and II at the college I attend, and I have nothing but praise for the author and illustrators of this book.It is as comprehensive as A&P can get, and as difficult as the material is to learn, it is broken down into systems so that it is not too overwhelming.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
I bought the book the first time because I had to.I bought it the second time because I wanted to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have Book for Anyone Involved in the 12 Steps
This book is truly a must have, inspiring, comprehensive, and enlightening guide through the 12 steps within any recovery program.I have used this with countless clients in therapy and have had nothing but great results. This book is highly recommended for all clinicians and anybody wising to grow in the 12 step process.

3-0 out of 5 stars Stronger for Addicts than Co-Addicts?
Patrick Carnes has been a grounder-breaker in every sense concerning sexual addiction. I feel ambivalent about this offering, however. I think on the whole it's a stronger book for addicts than for codependents. The material seems to revolve around addiction with co-addiction serving as an afterthought, both figuratively and literally. As a recovering codependent, I yearn for materials that address my issues head-on instead of relating me to the addicts in my life. Something about this material makes me feel second-class and doesn't inspire me to go as deeply as I could.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best
I am a physician in Brazil and I consider this book the best in this specialty.

4-0 out of 5 stars Geat Resource on the Subject.
This book offers insight to pain managment and lay out of patient procedures and functional use for pain controll. Highly recommend for students and doctors a like. Need strong medical back ground for the latter chapters, a good refernce for boards and residence programs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I have recently received my book and am thrilled.I have seen it at several pain meetings, but hadn't pulled the trigger on which pain book would give me my most bang for the book (Waldman, Raj, etc.).Image-Guided Spine Intervention is an excellent book and accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do, that is being a "how-to" book with superb imaging. In fact, I have yet to see a book that has more clear images than this book. While there are a few things that are missing in this book (discographic manometry, kyphoplasty-although the book came out just as this was emerging), all in the book is well worth the price.Reading Dr. Petersohn's commentary I wonder if we received the same book. The book is a "how-to" book and therefore is not intended to give clinical algorithms, although I admit it would make it an even more comprehensive book. The authors made the patient positioning understandable by referring to the projection with relation to the patient as opposed to the direction of the x-ray beam, which can be confusing.Perhaps in future editions, both positioning techniques can be given. With cervical transforaminal injections, one does not need a limiting AP projection to make sure one does not have cord or subdural penetration. If you follow their positioning and technique and intentionally hit the superior articular process, then walk a few mm anteriorly, you will necessarily be in the correct position, which is confirmed with contrast. For thoracic facet injections, previous reports including Dreyfuss demonstrate that one needs to start well inferior to the facet joint and angle cephalad in order to enter the coronally oriented thoracic facets. This book describes a technique, which demonstrates that this does not need to be done and that one can take a straight AP approach (proven with a CT injection) and still get the contrast into the entire joint.Dr. Chua's thoracic medial branch anatomy was just published this last year and post-dates this book.I agree there is no reason to give steroid after a facet denervation. The chapter on pharmacology was adequate for all pain practitioners. The book never sets out to be something to study for the boards. The statement "may be appropropriate for radiologists or physiatrists" sounds fairly hostile as well.As for discography, their approach to lumbar discography is reasonable.NASS and ISIS are only GUIDELINES not standards and there is no proof that there is an increased infection rate with single STYLETTED needle discography vs. double needle technique. They do not complain about L5-S1 access, rather that it is more difficult and that double-needle technique is often unnecessary. It makes sense to perform discography with a single needle since the new intradiscal procedures are performed that way.The authors do not list "pseudoarthrosis" as a contraindication to discography, but do list a solid posterolateral bone fusion as one due to lack of access.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not good when compare to Chang's Chemistry book
This book made me confuse. Not clearly written.
5-0 out of 5 stars Clearly written, richly illustrated, and well organized text for a one year general chemistry course (or self study)
This is an interesting text for a one year general chemistry course. While all general chemistry texts form major publishers have some convergence so they all cover similar basic material, they all have different organizing ideas. What I enjoyed about this text is that it has a clear organizing principle: the periodic table of elements.
2-0 out of 5 stars it s not the best and certainly not even good. just bit below average
I have read 2 other chem book and found this book is my least favorite.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible source of insight
I wish they would make another edition, even though its expensive, well worth its read. written well enough for both laymen and professional. It gets kind of technical at the end, but once you've read enough of the other books, you pretty much can get an idea of the clinical stuff.
5-0 out of 5 stars Making a difficult study simply amazing!
Studying and treating Bipolar Disorder is a difficult trend. Since Kraepelin lessons became available in his book, perhaps "Manic Depressive Illness" is the first to try the almost impossible mission to launch new lights on the matter. And with an amazing approach full of eruditism as well as simplicity and warmth. Untill nowadays, extremely accurate, complete, precise and comprehensive. In little words: in all aspects, amazing!

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK
Years ago when I was hospitalized for this illness, this HUGE reference and research book literally got me through. When doctors and my own family didn't know what was going on with me, I knew because the things written in this book were detailing (to a hugely accurate degree)my own experiences. Beyond this, it gives invaluable insight into lesser-known facets of this condition that it's apparent not even some physicians have researched, so in depth. The criticisms of some semi-outdated material are valid...certainly there have been advances in medicine, in particular, in the past 10-15 years. However, the bulk of the information is current in its validity and would not change, over time. This is some intense research. There is simply no other reference book out there that is so detailed and thorough. You must buy this book if you are the least bit interested in learning about this illness.Mental health experts should be required by law to own it.Surely, if you yourself have experienced the effects of bipolar disorder or you know someone in your family or life with it, you will literally not be able to put the book down--it's fascinating! Buy it, coupled with co-author Kay Redfield Jamison's other books (she's a psychiatrist AND a bipolar/manic depressive)--she is refreshingly unashamed and clear about her own life experiences in other works.Don't expect any personal examples in this book, as it's strictly research and data. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Agree, But Disagree
I agree with Reiss that if we take hormones at all, they should be natural hormones, and unfortunately, so many women suffer from menopausal symptoms that hormonal replacement seems to the the only answer or relief. I suffered from day and night hot flashes, skin conditions, and a lousy mood as I entered menopause.I actually went to a western medical doctor, something I totally disagree with. They wanted to put me on premarin, and/or anything else I would take to fatten their kickbacks.Luckily, I was referred to a holistic health consultant trained originally by Native Americans. She showed me how to get in balance without hormones, and I'm fine. This book, and many like them, should be read with caution. When doctors write books, it's the same to them as writing a prescription.Forget the cures, find the cause. When the cause is eliminated, there's no need for a cure. Read Gangi, then add this as a follow-up.

5-0 out of 5 stars At Last - Life Changing Truth About Natural HRT for Women
This is the first truly detailed and informative book I've read on Natural Hormone Replacement Therapy (NHRT) that I can really use. Now at age 51, I had started a NHRT regemin at age 49 that was helping, but I did not understand why sometimes it didn't work very well or not at all for some debillitating symptoms. I was also concerned about increasing my risk for cancer. After reading this book, and adjusting my hormone intake, I am no longer suffering from migraines, I no longer fear increasing my risk for cancer, the mind fuzziers are pretty much gone, and I feel better physically, mentally, and emotionally that I have in years - I'm talking since about age 15 here! As women, we must become informed about our hormone balances and imbalances, especially if we suffer from dramatic mood swings in our earlier years, or are approaching, or experiencing menopause. This book will become a permanent part of your 'health library'. Very self empowering!
5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific book providing a good understanding of synthetic vs bio-identical hormones

3-0 out of 5 stars Confusing Text Book With Errors In Reference Section
There were many formatting errors in this book, such as the glossary columns being switched around-"G" doesn't belong in the middle of the "F" vocab. Some of the page #'s listed in the index were not correct. If you must use this book then you should know that the info can normally be found close to the page listed in the index. The figures/tables were very useful and restated the text in an organized manner, which helped the flow of the writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Biology -- A Guide to the Natural World
I found this book to much easier to read and understand from all theprevious textbooks assigned to biology courses. The graphics and tablesand examples are completely explained. The format asks questions andanswers them in a simple, easily understandable text -- not like the mumbojumbo that a person would have to read over and over to finally understandits meaning. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Diagnostic Imaging:Orthopaedics
For MSK MRI, this is an excellent reference book. The computer-designed illustrations are helpful and the bullet-point outline form works well for MSK (I'm not so sure about other specialties). This is not a comprehensive book to cover the pathophysiology of bone disease and it is all MR modality.I use it to complement other texts such as Greenspan. ... The book is easy to read and it gives great examples to better understand the concepts.I would recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and applicable
The book treats many cases and reaches high level of coverage; it is very helpful, that in practice one can find many similarities, since the cases are very realistic and explained in depth. My opinion is, that it is valuable because it is applicable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book

3-0 out of 5 stars Complete Adult Psychotherapy Treatment Planner
This book is interesting, but it is far too "testbooky" and would benefit from being more focused on specific "how to" examples of treatment plans as do many other similar efforts. The text makes interesting reading, but, it didn't provide the concrete examples I expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great tool for the practioner's tool box.
Research suggests that an ever increasing number of practioners are relying on tools such as this to help formulate treatment plans. 5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You.
Just what I needed, such a time saver now I can actually use my brain power to help not just write about it--Thanks again. ... Read more
