5-0 out of 5 stars As much as I need to know and a little bit more
As a student of neuropsychology, I am aware of an overlap between what I must know and what an M.D. studies at a far greater depth. This book, as previous reviewers have noted, is a good introduction for a medical student, and for a psychologist, it is a gold mine. I wish I had read it before taking the gross anatomy class. The illustrations are first rate in my opinion, and the structures, their functions, and differential diagnosis information is very helpful for my professional needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Neuroclinical Diagnosis
Terrific book, great neurology diagnosis book for anyone.Great pictures, easy to read and understand.Great case studies as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal neuroanatomy text for med students/residents
I'm a seasoned clinical neurologist and bought this book to refresh my knowledge of neuroanatomy. To all the med students and residents out there reading this, I can assure you that virtually all of the information in the book is used by practicing neurologists on a daily basis. This is stuff you really need to know; by the time you're in my situation most of it is second nature. The author does a great job of presenting, just as the title promises, clinically oriented neuroanatomy. It goes beyond that, though, because there's also a fair number of elementary discussions of common neurological diseases, including differential diagnosis and treatment considerations.A nice learning feature are the frequent mnemonics scattered through the text, e.g. for the functions of the hypothalmus, HEAL=homeostatic, endocrine, autonomic, limbic. The illustrations are gorgeous, and the case presentations with accompanying MRI/CT are excellent.Strongly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars ... although impractical !
Ok. Let us consider it realistically and professionally. Nothing to say about the book more than what all others have said. Simply great. However, enjoying a book is not, and will never be, a goal in itself. What matters is what benefit you can get out of IMPLEMENTING what is in it.
5-0 out of 5 stars I HAVE BEEN DISNEY-FIED
EVERY HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATOR DOWN TO THE HOUSEKEEPERS NEED TO READ THIS BOOK. THIS SHOULD BE MANDATORY WHEN A NEW EMPLOYEE ENTERS THE WORK PLACE.OUR HOSPITAL HAS BEEN STRUGGLING LIKE MOST WITH WORRY ABOUT THE BOTTOM LINE MORE THAN THE PATIENT. THIS BOOK WILL BE USED IN OUR DEPT (I WORK WITH CANCER PATIENTS) FOR OUR UNIT MEETING DISCUSSIONS. I AM GOING TO MAKE IT A MANDATORY READ. THANKS FRED....I AM DISNEY-FIED

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Hospitals!
I have been a Lean Production Systems Practitioner for over twenty years and have had the privilege of learning from some of the original teachers of Lean in the United States. I have been influenced by Deming, Juran, Goldratt, Peters, Covey, Kotter, Drucker, Greenleaf, Senge and many other authors on leadership and management of change and continuous improvement and organizational learning. I first read Fred Lee's book as I began a project to implement lean systems in several hospitals. "If Disney Ran Your Hospital" ranks as one of my favorite books on not only excellence in customer service but on leadership and organizational development. I especially enjoyed the discussion in Chapter 10 of the"Five Traps" that organizations and its leaders must avoid. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars By far, the best in the series.
This book is awesome. In medical school and residency, i never needed a sanford antimicrobial guide and this is why. Helps provide a solid foundation for microbiology and infectious disease.During rounds or morning report i would constantly quote or refer to this book and people would be like "you're kidding", but it never failed me. I've read The Red Book cover to cover, Nelson's infectious diease section, Harrison's infectious disease chapters, and much of Feigin's book. All the info in those books is so familiar because of this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT book for coursework and boards!!!!
this is such a good book for coursework...during my classes i felt the professors went TOO Much into random detail and i could not tease out what was important and what was junk...when i started using this book...all the important facts became obvious...there are charts at the end of each section...I used those as quick review before the boards...a month before my exam i re-read through the book from front to back...and during my 2 days of microbio review i just read through the charts...the corny cartoons actually help a lot!!! and they give some good clinical facts....goofy book...but great information...almost every single students at our med school had one...

4-0 out of 5 stars Quality Micro Review
This is one of those review guides that's just dumb enough to be useful.Rather than give you a dry and crusty review of microbiology (which can be quite the crusty topic), this little text uses cartoons, pneumonics, and mildly off color jokes to cram facts into your head.I used it for the microbiology component of my medical school education, and then reread it with excellent results while studying for my step I examination.

5-0 out of 5 stars DYNOMITE
I have read this book like there is no tomorrow, and this book is excellent on the ward and off. I can't wait for the next edition. I suggest to buy it and read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars good resource for IM residents
It's very resourceful.Just a bit heavy to carry around.I should have chosen the PDA version.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for review, but you will need to go deeper
Although I consider this to be one of the best handbooks for a quick superficial review, there are several other books which allow for more in depth learning while on the wards... such as The Consult Manual of Internal Medicine & of course... The Washington Manual. I would definitely carry around, or at least have handy, one of these while on the wards. If you get Pocket Med, make sure you get the new edition (2nd) as there is a new neurology section which is very nice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An ideal and a superb text
This book is a classic reference text in neurology surpassing any other book in the field . Every resident in neurology should possess one and neurologists are no exemption . The minute details in genetics are kept to the bare minimum and at the same time the clinical aspects are stressed . The neuroanatomy and physiology at the beginning are simply fantastic. Kudos to Professor A. Ropper .
4-0 out of 5 stars good reference
It's not the most complete reference in neurology, but it's objective, go straight to the point, suitable clinical information. I recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic text.
The book is a "must have" item for those interested in neurology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strong, current review of general surgery
This is THE book for a senior surgical resident to purchase. It is updated every 3 years, and reflects advances in techniques, preoperative and postoperative evaluation, and clinical management decision making for all of the commonly encountered problems in general surgery. The authors do not merely rehash the previous edition, but present the information in a clear, concise, and enjoyable text with good tables and images. It has been very helpful to me in my Chief year, and I expect it to help me pass my boards. A MUST HAVE!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best radiology book on the market, great for nat'l boards
I graduated chiropractic school this year.I used this book in school and found this it to be filled with lots of info on soft and hard tissue pathology. The radiographs are excellent in this book.Every condition from spinal bifida occulta to fibrous dysplasia is described with the utmost detail.Every chapter has a helpful summary that summarizes all the important points of each condition.I also used this book to help me study for Part II, III and IV of the National Boards. However, if you really want a great book to study for the national boards do what my study group and I did, get the following:4-0 out of 5 stars Yochum & Rowe Essentials
An essential text for all chiropractic and medical students as well as practicing doctors.Useful write-ups on hundreds of conditions.Wonderful coverage of arthritides and tumors.Huge section on normals and a small section on positioning. The only place it's lacking is in chest and abdomen, and that's because it's a book on skeletal radiology.I couldn't do without it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST BUY!
I highly recommend these books to anyone that wants a firm foundation inradiology. The chapters follow a simple, logical progression that firsttime readers will enjoy. The pictures and diagrams that are included allowthe student to get a true feeling of the various radiological findingsassociated with disease processes.A must for any student's personellibrary! ... This book is in very good shape. It is a paper back version but the contents are exactly the same as a hardback version. The pages and chapters are the same. The cover of the book has slightly curled edges due to it being used. Other than that, the book is in good condition.

Editorial Review

Lia Lee was born in 1981 to a family of recent Hmong immigrants, and soon developed symptoms of epilepsy. By 1988 she was living at home but was brain dead after a tragic cycle of misunderstanding, overmedication, and culture clash: "What the doctors viewed as clinical efficiency the Hmong viewed as frosty arrogance." 4-0 out of 5 stars Well written...but some conclusions are just wrong!
This was a fascinating book.I enjoyed it and I learned a lot. I think the author didn't come to some conclusions which were painfully obvious. She continued to keep the theme of a culture that was impenetrable and would not change, even after thousands of years of persecution. What about after a few years of commercialism? It is only a matter of time before 2nd and 3rd generation Hmong will be completely assimilated into American culture. You could already see the signs when Fadiman described what the Lee children were doing now.Soccer, medical school, western music. It is inevitable. It is easy to keep a culture untouched for so long when you live in obscurity in the mountains with almost no interchange with the outside world. But when you put a TV in your house, the whole world is right there everyday. Now, the parents may not understand the language, but the kids sure do, and it will affect them.Twenty years from now, the shaman will be in the phone book and you can hire them perform at a kids birthday party, or there will be a class at the local community center on "Reconnecting to your Hmong Roots, all you need to learn in 8 weeks", just like the Native Americans, or learning hula dancing. When society is so connected by technology, you cannot live on a cultural island.I just don't believe it can happen.
5-0 out of 5 stars I grew up in Merced and had no idea about this
I grew up amongst the sizable population of Hmong immigrants in Merced during the time the Lees were going through this ordeal.
5-0 out of 5 stars just beautifully written
so all the praise i can possibly say about this book has been, so this will be short. all in all, even if i wasn't reading it for the subject matter, Fadiman's storytelling is amazing. not only is this book damn informative and perceptive-changing, it is also VERY ENTERTAINING. almost like a novel, it grips you at parts, makes you feel a gamult of emotions... ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Oddly parochial title ...

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview
There is a very good reason this series is endorsed by the NPTA.Of the six or so books that I used to study for the exam, this was the most helpful by far.It reviews every topic on the exam, and is a great starting place to see what you need more work on.This is the book that got me a passing score on the exam, and I don't really think I can give it higher praise than that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great workbook
This book is a great study guide to prepare for the certification exam. The book is easy to read and it leaves out all the fluff that is in the other study books. After reading and doing the practice exams I found what my weaknesses were and was able to go back to my schoolbooks to strengthen those areas. I took the certification exam this month (March) and think I did fine; there are a lot of math questions in the exam and wish I spent more time in that area.

I just got my exam scores back and I got a 118, a composite percent score of 78 for the ADN program section I'm interested in, I'm not completely sure of my school's minimum standard, but the numbers look good to me. This book was helpful in getting me there. It contained very good information and practice questions that were very close in format to the real exam questions on the test. Having said that I say that this book is a valuable TOOL, not an answer book. You have to know the material in advance and then this book will be a great review for you. The formating is orderly and the summaries at each section are great for a brush up of the subject. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to enter the nursing program, it's well organized and worth the money. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Sigh....
Another ubiquitous book. A "must have"....i don't own one. Don't want one. Too big. People just buy it for the pictures anyway, has anyone really read the text in Zitelli's? Most people use it as an atlas to review for boards...My logic is, if you're gonna just use it for pictures, why not buy the atlas by Shah? There are other atlases out there that are less cumbersome and cheaper. Plus, do you think the pedi board people will take a picture right out of a well-known text?
5-0 out of 5 stars Could not be better
This is the finest text a pediatrician can own for daily practice, board brush up and companion to the standard textbooks. It can fill many gaps inherent in the nature of pediatric training and is eminently relevant. If the authors never pen another things, they can be forever proud of this work. Brava.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-Have for anyone in Peds
This is undoubtedly a must-have reference for anyone in pediatrics. This has a great collection of color images & is well-organized.The new edition is definitely weightier, but there is more text & more diagrams.Considering the cost, it's probably not worth getting the new edition if you already have the older one. However, if you're buying, buy the new one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Views the forest as well as the trees.
This book rocks. It is unbelievably well written and can be used by immunology students at all levels. Each chapter begins by explaining how what you are about to read fits into the big picture, it then explains how the section will be broken down and why as well as where in the book such subjects will be further discussed. As each section begins, another review pulls the details out from under the microscope and back into their place in the overall function. There are fabulous diagrams and each one has additional explanations written slightly differently than the body of the text, so if you didn't understand when reading thru the chapter, there is a 2nd chance for achieving understanding by reading the diagram explanations. All too often, texts this technical get lost in detail and and leave students with a fragmented understanding and lots of frustration. Not so with this text. Even thru the tuffest most technical parts when memory and understanding may get muddy, this book keeps you well aware of where your understanding fell off, you still have the big picture and a chronology that instills confidence in continuing through the material with a successful outcome.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for the Serious Immunology Student
I am a first year medical student and I use this text as my primary immunology resource because it is superb. The chapters are very well organized by logical process, rather than arbitrarily divided into cell type. The writing is clear and concise, but certainly not spare on details -- Janeway includes the most modern information and current research.
3-0 out of 5 stars Its almost the samething.
I use this book for college, I think it is more for graduated courses. The language is a little bit confusing. It lacks of an order and if you buy the previous edition you wont miss anything from this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I am currently a second year PA student. This has been an amazing help on my rotations, all of them.I recommended it several of my classmates; they also love it.We have a test at the end of each rotation, and this is a perfect way to review. Just the facts without much fluff. It is also a handy reference in the clinic.

1-0 out of 5 stars 2006 Current to be updated for 2002. Go on to buy it. Editors need you.
It became boring. Look at the endocrinology section. It claims if there is only one study related to selenium theraphy in autoimmune thyroiditis in the editions of 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006... Infact there are more than 5 studies on this topic in the literature. Do you want to buy similar claims? Your choice. Editors need you... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book about love
Ms. Anand tells a wonderful tale of true love.Love of a husband and wife faced with unexpected challenges so early in their marriage, and how they struggled to keep that love alive under both sad and horrific conditions.Love of children for their parents and each other.Love of family, both immediate and extended. And love for each and every person touched by the fight for the cure. I was swept away by the human drama and just when I thought I knew what was going to happen next, the story look another unforeseen turn. It's amazing to realize that this is a true story.Life and love doesn't get any better than this.

5-0 out of 5 stars It makes you think and it makes you care
This wonderful book has a lot of emotional depth and complexity.John Crowley, the young father, is brash, brilliant, arrogant, and ignorant. He makes personal mistakes and business mistakes, yet you remain drawn to his story by empathy for his desperation as he fears that his small children will suffer a slow painful death. It's an honest and interesting portrait of a real human being, not a one-dimensional hero.
5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting - Read it non-stop!
Very good book - Interesting story.Highlights are the lengths a family goes through to help their children, and the inspirational message.I think the title is ironic, since there is not actually a "cure" for Pompe Disease, merely a treatment to help stabilize and possibly restore some muscle function. Also misleading a bit, because while Crowley without a doubt worked very hard on a cure, the actual treatment approved by the fda was not the main one he was involved with researching/funding.Nonetheless, still a very admirable man and good story. ...
