5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and organized textbook
This was my textbook for Biology 101 & 102. This book was a pleasure to read. It is clearly written and not dry at all so it was easy to keep focus. Even in my upper level classes, I find myself referring back to it occasionally and am still impressed by it. An important point I would like to make is that, if you are using this as a course textbook, the CD is invaluable. The animated tutorials and chapter quizzes, (which are quite thorough), kept me one step ahead. That CD shaved hours off of my study time for each test.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Comprehensive
Actually found this one in my storage boxes and dusted it off for a look see. Holds up against contemporary text in classes now. When it says buy used from like $2, that's a helluva deal. For a science book over 10 years old, it still does a bang up job on subject of genes, ecology, mechanisms of evolution....the chapter on biological diversity is almost complete enough to be a zoology text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Long, dense, and at first look tedious - but absolutely worth it.
This book was used in my AP Bio class, where my teacher's constant reminders to "read the book" usually went unnoticed. This isn't because Campbell's book is necessarily boring or difficult to understand; in fact, the situation is quite the opposite. Campbell delves into the concepts of biology with more than adequate depth and breadth for the subject, offering both the basics and the details necessary to survive AP Bio (and, from the way my AP Exam went, college freshman Bio, too).

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
The writing may not be perfect, but it's still a great textbook, probably the best you can find.
1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written
This is a poorly written textbook; rambling and fragmented information is presented on a piecemeal basis rather than in a clear, concise and well-organized manner.Important information belonging to one subject-matter chapter, is often presented as "aside" information in other chapters on wholly different subjects. This textbook appears to have been written by an author who forgot to take his ADHD medication. This "substandard" quality has become common place with this particular publishing company, Prentice Hall, to include its many subsidiaries (Pearson, Thompson, Southwestern, etc.), to the detriment of the education system.

1-0 out of 5 stars Catchy Title
Do we really need another liberal manifesto about Bush? We all know he's made a mess in Iraq. And he refuses to protect U.S. borders, which may be the only thing liberals actually like about him. But I was surprised to learn the true cause of the Katrina disaster. Bush took a deep breath, exhaled, and actually blew up the winds that caused the N.O. flooding! Several weeks prior he ordered a battalion of jackhammers into the area to compromise the levees. The "chocolate" mayor of N.O. and the hapless governor of Louisiana - both democrats - were forced to remain incommunicado to facilitate Bush's diabolical schemes. Enough already. What do you liberals have to offer? Homosexual marriage and our school kids putting condoms on cucumbers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Brilliance and Ignorance Together For One Very High Price
This is by far the best that Campbell & Co. have produced. The text reads easily and with great clarity. The difference of this 7th edition over previous editions is significant, and nearly worth the price. However, paying nearly $150 for a text is ridiculous. The publishers obviously think they can command such a premium because this text is so closely linked with the current American public high school's Biology Advanced Placement test.In short, they feel they have taxpayers over a barrel on this and can 'get away with it'.Shameful.Also, Campbell and Reece are radical evolutionists.Do not expect balance or 'both sides of the argument' presented on any of the more controversial aspects of Darwin's theory. There is no debate as far as they are concerned.Though 'spontaneous generation' was disproven by Louis Pasteur and Francisco Redi over 150 years ago, Campbell and Reece cling to this notion with strange, obsessive passion that borders on the bizarre.Their arrogance on this important issue strongly detracts from what is an outstanding, and otherwise balanced resourse. Why not address some contrary points of view to Darwinian evolution and even (gasp!) admit many of the more infamous errors by overly enthusiastic biologists in the past (e.g. the "Nebraska Man" of the Scopes Monkey Trial was actually only two teeth; the "Piltdown Man" was a hoax that was taught as fact in American universities for nearly 40 years, etc...).Such arrogance quickly leads to blindness, and has no place in real science. But, in spite of these confusing departures from real science (science being that which is both observable and testable), the text has some outstanding qualities that make it one of the premier sources in the field.

3-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, Expensive, Thorough,& Biased
This certainly is the definitive word for biology students. The 7th edition reads faster, with more clarity and interest, than the previous edition by far.Does this warrant the outrageous price ?Doubtful, but since public schools (i.e taxpayers) are footing the bill for the most part, the publishers do this with relative impunity. This latest edition has stunning photos and graphics, and these add greatly to the text's readability. The chapters are short and concise, and the review questions and self-test items are excellent. The CD Rom that accompanies the text is also excellent and highly recommended. The optional study guide is not however, as it has a thoroughly mediocre quality and superfluous nature.Of even greater offense is the "pay per view" website that is offered for additional resources. After paying $100 for a text, and then be expected to pay more for Web assistance is unabashedly mercenary. However the objective reader will find Campbell & Reece's greatest flaw in its blatant bias concerning the theory of evolution. The 'theory' is not treated as such, but as an obvious fact, with no contrary points of view to any of the controverisal aspects of the theory included whatsoever. This is no small matter.Campbell and Reece simply assume that the spontaneous generation of life indeed occurred at some time in the Earth's past (though this has never been demonstrated experimentally--ever) and that DNA and RNA rose via the random chance of fortuitous collisions of molecules over time, (again, with no experimental evidence to justify these claims), the serious reader must earnestly question why the theory is presented in each chapter with an almost obsessive fervor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, mercenary publisher -- caveat emptor
This is a lovely textbook. It is very up-to-date and well organized. It ihas full-color printing throughout the text and great self-assessment questions. The CD-ROM (included) also has many helpful resources.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise and Easy to Understand
This book is required for MBA Managerial Accounting, and is also used in undergraduate classes. The topic chapters are well organized and use good examples to explain. This is one of the predominate and most popular books to teach this subject. It does go into detail about T accounts more than is required for my class, although the depth is not too esoteric. With that, I close in stating that the international edition is the same and is much cheaper. Even though stores won't by back Intl Editions, you can save more (and on the front end) than will be refunded at buyback at the end of semester.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text book
Overall, this is actually a very well organized and highlighted textbook, the pages are easy to read and the charts and examples are very straightforward. Emphasis is placed in the right places. The bad thing is that the textbook does not supply answers to any of the exercises or problems which really doesn't help, but hopefully your teacher will compensate for that. I still think it's a little verbose and repetitive in the text at times, but otherwise, the chapters deliver good understanding and are very clear. I highly recommend this edition. ... Read more

The annual Nobel Prize winner in that field never receives as much publicity as his or her compatriots in peace, literature, or physics. 2-0 out of 5 stars Fluff and Nonsense
The underlying theme of this book seems to be that if one can come up with enough provocative theses and find some support, however tenuous, for them, perhaps one can write a thin, light weight book which will attract attention and thereby gain one's 15 minutes of fame.
3-0 out of 5 stars Compelling, but superficial arguments
The storytelling and economic science are the backbone of this compelling book and the scattered topics aren't enough to minimize Levitt's or Dubner's effort. The superficiality of the ideas is, however, and the wild concepts that the self-proclaimed freakonomist advances are easily put to question by simple thought experiments. For instance, the most controversial proposition that Levitt makes is that the legalization of abortion in the '70s was the single most important factor in the steep decline of crime in the US in the '90s, and that can be scrutinized easily.Levitt says that the people who would have been born to those mothers in the '70s would have gone on to live lives of the unwanted and been more likely to commit crimes in their late teens and early twenties (the '90s).Since millions were aborted, they weren't there to commit those crimes later. This eerie idea may be hard to stomach, but that's not the reason it should be doubted. If the aborted children would have a higher chance of becoming criminals, they would, no doubt, also have a higher chance of becoming poor, but the poverty rates for people above 18 remained relatively stable through the '80s and since.

I purchased the PMP Exam Prep Book, PMP FASTrack, as well as Test Tactics Numbers 1 and 2 (1 is better than 2). They were all very, very helpful, and the best of all the study aids I used. Questions at the end of each chapter in the book are similar to the actual test questions. Of course you will need to read, read, read the PMBOK as well as other material. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb!
This is the best book I have read in regards to successful business. If you work in the corporate world, this is a must read.It is based on five years of research, and the author doesn't try to prove anything other than that which the facts prove.I am reading it for the fourth time now and draw more from it each time.Again, a must read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good to Great review from Steven Vornea
Every single person needs to read this book and just buy it! This book can be a life changer for people.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best business books out there
Jim Collins puts forward one of the great concepts in business...and in life...that getting the right people in the right situations is the best staple of great leadership.Collins' message can be applied to any situation (business, sports, education, etc.).He has an engaging writing style and uses a wide variety of companies to illustrate his central theme of leadership as leading to great success.Collins also illustrates the great importance of a humble leader, one who gives of him/herself for the betterment of the system as a whole. This was a fascinating read, and you will close the book with a great deal of insight into how you run both your professional and personal life.A terrific, terrific read.In fact, I have gone back and begun to read Built to Last, which is actually the prequel to Good to Great.I honestly could not recommend this book more than I do. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Handy reference
I didn't have this book during my P3 (3rd year of PharmD school) year; we used the text by Kradjan that had a patient-based format. DePiro's more traditional format makes it easier to find info quickly. The downloadable format of this text (which comes with the book) makes it even faster to find info. A downside would be books like these are out-of-date as soon as they're published, but I've been using the DePiro just fine for my P4 clerkships and plan to use Kradjan's as a doorstop. (I'm not really a kid)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for a great price
I received my order fairly quickly and the book was great. I would definately order from them again.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Standard by Which Others are Compared
It's difficult to write a review of this book because most of the people who are even thinking of buying it have probably used it already. They have seen it in the library, their professors have shown it to them, or it is required for the course they are taking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing photography -- no narrative -- great coffee table book
As other reviewers have said, the photography is top notch.I will focus my review on the difference between this book and his "classic", A Child Is Born. When I was deciding on my purchase I did not know which book would be better for my purposes, so I hope to shed some light on that for others.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful images of the human lifespan
Lennart Nilsson took the first image of a living human embryo in the 1960s and stunned the world. Now, Life is an absolutely amazing book of images documenting human life from DNA through fetal development and birth. The second half of the book focuses on the human body, it's organs, tissues the things that eventually threaten life - bacteria and viruses.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant photography...
The photography in this book is proof positive of the miraculousness of life and the beginning of a human soul.I heartily recommend this book for a deeper look at the creation of a baby and its subsequent growth. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Re-reading the Classics
The canon of Sales Lit goes back only a couple of decades. In that canon, Neil Rackham's first "Spin Selling" takes a special place as one of the classics or founding texts. So, if you need help preparing a meeting with one of your largest accounts, take the time to re-read this classic text.
4-0 out of 5 stars Revealing selling process
SPIN Selling illustrates the validaty of the method by showing how real Fortune 500 sales forces have improved by asking the right questions to uncover customer pain. This book will enlighten sales managers and any representatives who manage large sales transactions. Also, executives can benefit from the insights about large sales. I have personally improved my sales numbers greatly after utilizing the ideas in SPIN Selling. This book deserves a place in all-time sales manual classics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on asking the right questions
A very good and interesting book and very easy to read. For me this book was very convincing for 2 important reasons: 1. SPIN selling is based upon scientific research of many sales calls for many years. 2. The idea of SPIN selling is about the fact that customers decide whether they buy somehting (or advance the sales call) upon their own ideas, their own beliefs, their own assumptions.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best book ever
Actually I had the previous version of this book and after reviewing other comments, I decided that the previous version would be more than enough for me. What I want to share with you here is how I succeeded from 540 to 740.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Tool
This book has many practice problems, but the overall review of the materials is lacking. If you aren't up to scratch on the math and verbal already, you should consider spending on some other review materials. Make sure you time yourself while doing the problems -- timing isKEY. I used this book along with Princeton's Verbal Workout. It worked out.

    3-0 out of 5 stars Doctor's Jokes Don't Work
Yes, I understand that Doctors believe the human body is SO complex that they feel they have to add little elves, sex jokes, and personal, inside humor to make the book readable; However, you can do basic education and keep people reading by not mystifying.I personally took offense at some of the body labels and the condescending way this book approaches the body. I've read several books similar to this, all in an effort to keep my 65 year old body young, and to protect my children from disease.I found Rayna Gangi's Book, and Andrew Weil's books to be much more respectful, and hence, more informative and readable. These guys are capitalizing on the YOU premise, and obviously laughing and joking all the way to the bank.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I could personally thank the authors
I also bought the RealAge makeover book.I highly recommend that if you enjoyed this book.It has even more details, IMO.I am following the workout plan in that book and have been for the last 48 days.I feel fantastic.I also got my multivitamins based on their recommendations.
4-0 out of 5 stars Yes - Basic - But Thats What The General Population Still Needs
As a Fitness Pro and Lifestyle Consultant - it is clear the general population still lacks knowledge of the basics. While a good number of reviews state this book is not a good one because it only covers the basics - I disagree.

    Editorial Review

For her six years as CEO of technology giant Hewlett-Packard, Carly Fiorina was one of the most public faces in business, consistently chosen as the most powerful woman in corporate America. But after being ousted by the HP board of directors in early 2005, she stepped away from the spotlight. She returns to the public eye with her new memoir, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
I had very little knowledge of Carly and her time at HP prior to reading her book.I picked it up because I had the opportunity to hear her speak at a convention in Las Vegas and I was very impressed. This book really was enjoyable from page 1 all the way through the end. Many may disagree with her style and candidness, but I found great inspiration in this book.It is well written (a page turner)!!Pick it up, you won't regret it or put it down!

1-0 out of 5 stars No self-awareness here
Carly is a talented executive who made some big mistakes at HP. She could learn from them and move on to be a great executive, but she doesn't appear willing to acknowledge her mistakes, much less learn from them. She throws a lot of blame around in this book seems blinded by her own arrogance. I personally hate when people talk about making "tough choices" as if it shows gutsiness, or proves character. I'd rather hear some discussion about making correct choices, or informed choices. Since Carly is reported to be considering a run for office, this arrogance and disinclination to accept responsibility or blame for bad choices, should be kept in mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent biography
This book is much, much more than the story of corporate greed and corruption at the Board of Dirctor's level. This is a very interesting and easy to read story of one peron's life as she earned her way from secretary to Chairman and CEO of one of the world's largest and most powerful companies. I highly recommend this book as a biography, not just a tell-all on corporate scandal. ... Read more
