Editorial Review

This is serious stuff. The most widely used medical text in the world and the hypochondriac's bible, the Merck has the lowdown on the vast expanse of human diseases, disorders and injuries, as well as their symptoms and recommended therapy. It's intended for physicians and medical students, but though the type is tiny and the language technical, the Merck's a valuable volume for anyone with more than a passing interest in bodily ills. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Handy Medical Guide
If a doctor gives me or someone else I know a diagnosis, I can look it up in the Manual and get a straightforward, detailed writeup about it.I always use it in conjunction with a doctor.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Merck Manual - Medical Accuracy at Last
The Merck Manual has been in use in my psychology office for over 20 years. It is has been a wellspring of accurate albeit very technical information on every syndrome and disease that has been presented to me.It is an absolutely invaluable supplement to my psychological practice.HOWEVER....it is also a hypochondriac's nightmare, so those who obsess about their health should not buy it.For all others, it can make your visits to your doctor much more productive. And you can amaze and mystify your friends with incredible medical obscura!

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it While Available!!!
This will be THE CLASSIC Merck Manual for many many years to come and for this reason alone any physician, allied medical rofessional, or hypchondriac should buy it.It is not only leather bound, but contains one hundred years of medical history that changed the face of Western Civilization. You may compare almonst one hundrend years and many generations of advances in medical knowledge and find no comparable period, from hand-washing and public health to AIDs to the discovery of penicillin and aspirin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Text
I used this book in my General Chem I class a couple of years back and have since used it as a resource for my organic, biochem classes and MCAT review. The book was very easy to read compared to others and the examples were straight forward and easy to follow. The authors also attempted to include scientific/medical relevance to some of the issues covered. The most difficult chapter in the book to read is quantum theory; however, this topic is typically difficult for anyone to understand at first.
4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
This book has been a big help to me as a reference source to fall back on. especially the CD that came with it. This book covers everything from thermo chemistry to organic chemistry. The website is somewhat insightful as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not at all for beginners
I am currently taking an AP chemistry class, and we use this book. The class is meant to be extremely difficult, accelarated, and in-depth.We cover 22 out of the 25 chapters; we do not do modern materials, chemistry of the environment, or coordination compounds.

this offers some good ideas and approaches but the writing is not clear and it is hard to understand some of the concepts, techniques, and some of the handouts.still, there is some useful stuff.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great help
This book is an amazing alternative to some of the lengthly classes offered by hospitals, though I do not advise against any kind of medical treatment! Many DBT skills groups use this book as their basis, and it's convienent to have at home to use and keep as your own. It's a tough read, but worth all the work. Good Luck. Jenn ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Most frustrating book ever!
I teach at addiction studies at a local university, and found this book to be redundant and frustrating. It repeats itself, as would a student who has a single thought and lots of space to fill. I find this to be the most poorly organized book I have ever taught from, and will not use it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review
An excellent resource guide into motivational interviewing. A must for any therapist of addiction. It should be the number 1 tool for any educators in handling difficult situations with students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kudos for Miller and Rollnick
As a longtime clinician and trainer of clinicians, I found Miller and Rollnick's "Motivational Interviewing" (2d edition) extremely sound, helpful and thoughtful.A great book for clinicians to read who are tempted to push one side of a patient's ambivalence ("But can't you see you have to leave him -- he's no good for you!")and not to respect the other side of it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Nice and Well Organized Book.
I had this book for about two semesters, in college by the way. The first semester I dropped it and finally the second semester I got a B. Interesting hm? Anyhow, the book contains a large amount of information including very nice diagrams and photographs and has vastly improved in my opinion from the early first few editions. What makes this book extremely informative is the fact that it is pretty well organized and set up including indexing and clear contents listing. 16 chapters starting slowly from the basics of the human body, its relations to chemistry, cells and tissues, and finally going more in depth by digging deep into the organ systems and the human anatomy.
3-0 out of 5 stars Tolerable
This book has some useful diagrams and illustrations. It's easy to read, but seems a bit too simplified at times. Also, I think the editors were a bit lax on the writing, personally. The CD quizes are helpful for review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and highly understandable textbook
This book filled with great informative pictures and information that makes any college A and P student's life a lot easier.I used this book for anatomy and physiology class I and II.The book is easy to read and it is a powersource of knowledge. The book is not tedious nor boring to read.In fact, it is quite interesting and was a pleasure studying from.If you want to know the type of questions asked on college anatomy and physiology exams, get the following which is also on amazon:Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps, the book is not horrible and it is just my class
This book tries so hard to make social and cultural variances seem like scientific fact. Of course, a nursing text should discuss patient care but not as always black and white; it edges on stereotyping at times. Conversely, if physiology is mentioned, the science behind the concept is often ignored. I think this book is based on pseudo-science at times.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good soruce of information
This book provides good explanations for the various processes and procedures of nursing. I really like the additional material such as the CD and the website.

This book is thick but it has all the necessary info you need to pass the NCLEX. I covered the whole book in about three weeks and did the CD in between. I even noticed some of the questions on the NCLEX itself had similar questions to the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Condensed, but not lost.
I actually use this version more than the big DSM IV TR because it is quicker to find things in.It is still a large book (over 900 pages), so it may not be a true pocket guide, but there is that version available also. However, if you do this everyday, this version can still fit in a pocket, and has all the ICD-9 codes for the pesky billing folks. Students could have this with them to learn at bedside the information they need to know for shelf and board exams.Resident psychiatrists, this should always be in you desk ready to go.Invest in this, 30 bucks well spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars The quick guide that a therapist or Psychiatrist needs
The full DSM-IV is the bible that modern Psychiatry is based around. The book is actually sprisingly a fair read and not to difficult to navigate. But, it is fairly large (943 pages). So how do you remedy this if you need the reference, you get the quick guide. It is perfect as a quick reference for the diagnositc criteria, as well as the ICD-9 codes for billing. This is perfect as well for Medical students to carry around in the pocket and quickly read criteria about their patient's diagnosis and rattle off quickly to their attending, scoring brownie points. They make this spiral bound edition, which is excellent because it holds up better than the bound edition, just for the fact that you will flip through this book a thousand times a day, especially if you are a student. So this is a great companion to the DSV-IV TR, and don't forget the conscise Kaplan and Saddock 10th edition as reference as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Classic book.
Intro to physical examination. Easy and harmless.Liked the chapter summary. This is a book for all health care profesionals. Physicians should use DeGowin or Sapira.

1-0 out of 5 stars Index Incorrect
The index in the version I have is completely inaccurate. What's more, to obtain errata you're required to enter a code on the publisher's website. This code is not stamped on the book but is on the packaging which I unfortunately threw away before I noticed the index was completely inaccurate.

2-0 out of 5 stars Get the 10th edition.
I can't say that I'm pleased with the new edition. The information is grossly disorganized, there are no introductory chapters, and important information has been omitted or dumbed down, e.g. the section on fat-soluble vitamins, specifically vitamin A.
5-0 out of 5 stars A complete Pharmacological Encyclopedia
This book is a complete pharmacological encyclopedia from its days of inception. It is useful to any physician as a desk reference.
3-0 out of 5 stars A rehash
I am a physician, and recently used the previous (10th) edition as an overview for a presentation I was preparing on opioid analgesics. We just got our new, 11th edition, and I embarked on a comparison of the chapters. To my astonishment, despite the considerable ongoing research in opioid pharmacology, the chapters were practically identical, with the new edition providing NO substantive new information.I cannot speak to the rest of this venerable reference, but this chapter was just a rehash (and a big disappointment). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great book
The pictures are really good, and the writing is quite clear. I am a graduate student in Movement Science, so am interested in the scientific aspects of movement. This book is an excellent bridge between the dancer/movement specialist and the biomechanics student.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a supplement, not a primary resource
Hopefully this statement will help those of you who are trying to decide what to buy: If you do not own a full copy of the APA Publication Manual, then do not buy this book. This book is meant to be a pocket-sized reference guide that you can carry with you. It is meant as a supplement, but it is not the primary resource -- the APA Publication Manual is the primary resource.
2-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete
There's no rules for title pages, no examples of manuscript pages, no rules for pagination. It doesn't even tell you if the reference list belongs on a separate page or what its heading looks like. I consider these glaring omissions, particularly if you are expected to use pure APA and have no departmental style guide (like me). This book is basically a glorified guide to citation and syntactic rules. Avoid it and pay the extra five bucks for the complete book. Getting the cheap book as some kind of protest won't signficantly hurt the APA and it will just make things harder for you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, lacking in visual references
While this is a great condensation of the main rules needed to write in APA style, this book lacks one major thing -- the practical examples of how to apply APA style in a document or manuscript.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference through the years
I have been using various iterations of Fitzpatrick throughout my 12 years of practice as a Family Nurse Practitioner. The organization, wealth of information, excellent photography (it really looks like what a provider sees in a person's skin!) all make it an invaluable reference. I am pleased to see the addition of more photography involving people of color, as upwards of 50% of the US population is now minority.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great reference

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is an excellent learning tool!
This book is a great textbook of emergency medicine, and I've chosen it over others simply because it's comprehensive without the useless drivel. Each section includes the necessary anatomy and pathophysiological considerations for the respective disoders. The subset of conditions are mentioned with just enough facts to understand the morbidity to treat it.The pictures, diagrams, algorithmic flow-charts, and drug regimens are a nice compliment, however, most of your clinical experience is going to come from interships and residency, so to assume this book is all you'll need to get by in EM is crazy.I still think it's the best out there to read before putting your mind to work.

2-0 out of 5 stars Downward Spiral on Autopilot
*Emergency Medicine, A Comprehensive Study Guide* has long been a well-regarded standard emergency text, useful in day-to-day practice as well as for board preparation. This new edition has advanced the enlightened 'evidence-based recommendations' for changes in practice patterns, however, the lack of editorial control has resulted in a book packed with conflicting information. Each chapter is written by a different consultant, and unfortunately not all of them are up on this concept... we therefore get a series of conflicting statements when there is overlap in topics, and there is no attempt to reconcile this variability.Admittedly, opinions in much of medicine do vary; but outright conflict within a few pages in a standard text without discussion does harm to credibility.Read more

I like this book. Microbiology is very fascinating to me.Parasites, etc are particularly interesting. If you are assigned this book for your Microbiology class, my advice is to read it and know the information. This book was very helpful.
2-0 out of 5 stars A lot of information....disorganized
I taught a basic undergraduate microbiology class using this text book. The students were mostly pre-nursing so we had a clinical focus. My main problem with the text is it is trying to be all things to all people. It tries to present too much information that is scattered all over the text. Frequently, within chapters, students have to jump back and forth to material presented in other chapters and it simply becomes information overload. In addition, some of the study question, especially the clinically oriented ones, ask the students about areas that haven't been adequately covered in the text or assume knowledge that they don't have as yet. Finally, beware the Powerpoint slide presentations. These are also full of errors and need pretty extensive editing.

5-0 out of 5 stars The fundamental authority
It is common practice at most universities to prescribe Biochemistry by Voet & Voet. The book is a classic which covers most relevant topics in Biochemistry from a more chemical perspetive (kudos for that!). For students doing a one off unit in biochemistry, this book will be far too dense and therefore, impractical. The target audience of this book are serious undergraduate biochemistry students who are familiar with first year chemistry and more importantly first year organic chemistry.
4-0 out of 5 stars great book, grossly overpriced
Voet and Voet is an excellent introductory biochemistry textbook. The focus leans more towards the chemical aspects as opposed to the biological, which allows it to fill an important gap among undergraduate texts. The scope is broad and comprehensive, with clear writing and informative illustrations. While the book is a valuable resource, the price is truly outrageous. For those adopting textbooks for classes, I recommend assessing whether the added chemical rigor is worth the added price for students.Serious and motivated students of biochemistry will likely appreciate and benefit most from this book.Check out the contents (e.g. at a library or college bookstore), and make sure they meet your needs, before taking the considerable financial plunge in buying this book though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pluses and publisher minus
As a reference for those of us that are out here doing research in the real world this is a Godsend. It may not be appropriate for an introductory text but for those of us needing a concise backup for real decisions it is wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A New Hope: Cliffs AP Biology
This has to do be one of the best reviewbooks, if not the best, for the AP Biology Exam.Although I worked very hard throughout the entire year, I needed a good review a couple weeks before the AP.All of my classmates had this book, and they loved it?Well, it is an excellent summary of all of the things learned in AP Bio.It presents only the most important terms, concepts, people, and experiments. It follows the structure of the Campbell Biology books. In essence, its information matches exactly what is in all of these books. It condenses and simplifies all topics and makes them comprehensible to even the lay reader. Its summaries last for around 200 pages. After that, it moves onto the twelve required AP experiments and explains them in short yet precise paragraphs. This really helps, especially if you have not done all of the experiments throughout the year.In the end, it provides practice test questions and their answers and explains the answers thoroughly.I forgot: there are practice questions at the end of each chapter to check-up on your comprehension. In the end, I read the Cliffs AP from beginning to end, looked over our handouts, read all my class notes, took practice APs, went over all of the experiments, and looked over key areas in my textbook. It paid off in the end: I got a 5.Because of this book, I had no doubt in my mind what I would get on the AP exam.Go in peace, my brothers and sisters.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST BOOK FOR PREPARING FOR THE AP BIOLOGY TEST!
I did not learn anything in my AP Biology class because my teacher was... not that great. Three weeks before the exam, I started studying. This book was the most helpful. It has great preparation questions and practice essays. It gives just the right amount of information needed to ace the test...nothing more, nothing less. Reading this book was the main reason I got a 5 on the exam. I would also recommend reading the barron's ap biology book along with this one and maybe another book for extra practice questions. That's all you need to ace this test. Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Med School Book ThatWas a Good Purchase
This book is phenomenally written, lusciously diagrammed, thoughtfully organized, and brilliantly coherent.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best textbook from second year!!
I got alot of [...] from my classmates for "wasting time" reading this book. Most people will tell you that it's too detailed and too long. But I feel that Robbins does a great job of weaving in high yield details from the basic sciences (Physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, anatomy, pathophysiology) into the material presented, so that you're not JUST studying pathology as you read through.I am a "network" learner, which means the more that I can connect what I'm reading with things I already know, the more easily I remember it.If you prefer learning this way, reading Big Robbins is a better use of your time than reading Basic Pathology or Fetal Robbins over and over again. To add some more weight to my words, I honored every class of second year EXCEPT for behavioral science, which, interestingly, gets no love from Robbins.I literally feel like half of what I learned second year I learned from reading Robbins, or at least is mentioned in Robbins if I learned it in another class. When I was studying for Step 1, Robbins served as an excellent reference for pretty much all the basic sciences as well as pathology. As much as I love this book, I unfortunately cannot boast that I read the whole thing through once.I'm gonna take a stab at it during 3rd and 4th year though...

4-0 out of 5 stars The bible, but use it like Harrison's
Don't try to read this monster unless your going into Pathology. It's very well written, but you just don't have time to cover this many details. You need to focus more on the Boards relevant material which is covered in books MUCH smaller (Rapid Review or BRS Path).
