1-0 out of 5 stars Lots of errors
I noticed a lot of errors while using this book. When you are taking the exams - the answers don't match the rationale. For example - the book says the answer is #2, but the rationale matches the answer for #3.Not recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE TO PASS
Love this book!Went through every question in the entire book as a review and also took Kaplan's prep class.Passed NCLEX with 75 questions.WOW!I owe passing to this book, seriously. If you're hard pressed for time, just do the questions in this book and learn from the answers.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book
I used this while in nursing school and it is a excellent refresher and review after studying your text books & class lecture. I must admit I did not use it for the NCLEX because I misplaced it after Hurricane Katrina. I used the NSNA review book & Frye 3000 nursingbullets to study which were simplyexcellent and all you need to pass the NCLEX on first try. I still think the Lippincott Review is a good user friendly book so give it or the NSNA-RN a try. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, comprehensive, and easy to use
The Manual is a complete guide to the AMA style and also an excellent grammar book. The topics are easy to find and the tables and lists are comprehensive. It is a great companion to The Chicago Manual of Style because it details the grammar preferred by the AMA and contains needed terminology. This is a necessary reference for medical publications proofreaders and editors.

5-0 out of 5 stars A style manual you will rarely close
The specific goal of the American Medical Association Manual of Style: A Guide for Authors and Editors is to codify and collect the myriad instructions, rules, and dictums that AMA applies to the many journals, books, and other publications that are printed under its imprint. The more general goal, perhaps not stated, is to broaden the influence of those standards so they encompass more of the medical publishing community. 5-0 out of 5 stars thank you cheryl verson for that work

5-0 out of 5 stars Dorland's is my fave!
I have the current edition (30th) and I absolutely love it! Another plus is you are given a code to be able access their online dictionary as well! It's a great book with great illustrations as well. From what I can see it is very thorough. I haven't run across a medical word yet that wasn't in it! :)I'm a new MT so I don't really have anything to compare Dorlands too, but I know that I'm hooked on it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Book for Class
I bought this book for school. So far it is alright. If one is looking into a leadership role it is a good read

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful and educational book
We are using this in my Intro to Leadership course at college and I have found the book to be very interesting. The author writes very clearly and explains everything quite well. I know its weird to write about, but I really enjoy this authors writing style. I rarely get an academic book where the writing is simple and very straight forward. In a crunch, I can read the first setence or two from each of his paragraphs and understand the concepts of the chapter quite well.

5-0 out of 5 stars an inner journey
Atul Gawande's book "Complications" is a rewarding read on many levels. The reader is drawn in smoothly along a thread of entertaining medical vignettes. These anecdotes serve as the framework for a set of well reasoned essays that explore the inner life of the surgeon.Gawande's primary purpose is to convey thevarious challenges, surprises, and contradictions that he has encountered as a surgical resident. His scrupulous honesty in describing the motivations, limitations, exhilarations, foibles, and challenges of the surgical profession is refreshing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly written reflections of what it is to work in medicine
This book was required for a friend's ethics class and she could not stop talking about it! I had to read it, too, thanks to her. We are nursing students, about to embark on our clinical rotations, and have both been strongly affected by this real and wonderfully written book. Dr. Gawande really has captured everything for the reader, who is left profoundly more knowledgable about a challenging and difficult, but rewarding, profession. He is amazing!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Glimpse Behind The Curtain
The medical profession, for much of its lifetime, has been shrouded in mystery. For many, the words and judgements of a doctor seem infallible, which is why there is often such incredulity associated with mistakes. It's only been in the past few decades that this has changed and people are learning that doctors are humans too. In Atul Gawunde's book, we get a behind the scenes look at his life as a resident in Internal Medicine and some of the truths that people must accept take place when they enter a hospital. What amazes me most about Gawunde's writing is his use of anecdotes to perpetuate his arguments and ideas. His experiences have been so rich and varied that he is able to draw upon so many fascinating cases to highlight some of the great and some of the not so great aspects of medicine and of learning to be a physician. Anyone who would like to be a doctor - and especially those who want to go into any surgical field - will benefit from this open and honest account of what it truly means to be a doctor. I was thoroughly engaged and even scared to learn about what often goes on in the mind of the person wielding the scalpel blade. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A+ For End of Chapter Problems
I had used this textbook at Ramapo College of New Jersey for Organic Chemistry I and II, and I found that the end of the chapter problems were superb in preparation for exams. I can't say much otherwise about the body of the text, reactions, mechanisms, etc., but I give this book an A+ for the End of Chapter Problems. They were tough and required a good amount of thought, which was exactly how I was tested in this class.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thanks Alot
thanks for the book. the first 100-150 pages were wrinkled quite a bit but the price makes up for it. shipping was good. thanks again.

1-0 out of 5 stars False Ad!

After reading "Why Do Men Have Nipples" and loving it, I had high hopes for book number two.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hey Doc, here's one that you'll like!!!!!!!!
I loved this book!!!!! I learned a lot and laughed my butt off in the process (hmmm, here's one for you guys, can one laugh ones butt off).I had only read a few pages of the "Nipple" book and liked it but never bought it or finshed it (Sorry guys, a slow learner here) but halfway through this book, I went and ordered the Nipple book. I highly recommend this book to everyone I know and those I don't know.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Probing Read For Understanding Our Bodies
Overall, I found this book very enjoyable. As suggested by the title, quirky questions that tangentially pop, or might eventually come, into one's mind are answered.Questions related to differences in the sexes, responses in sports physiology, affects of hormones, and truths of homeopathic healing are investigated among other topics. The book is tied together with lead-in fictional anecdotes and interjected IM conversations. The anecdotes are amusing, but the IM messages are very interesting as they show some of the behind the scenes methods (and digressions) that entail in the approach of putting a large literary work together.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you work in an ER or assessment setting...
I used this booklet as a quick reference in my work in a hospital ER and in doing intakes. It's meant to simply be a handy reference to the DSM criteria, and can't replace the study, consultation, and experience needed to understand the difference between clinically problematic and non-problematic behavior. If you work within the DSM/ICD/insurance system, and you've heard the phrase "justify your diagnosis" before, here's an invaluable and pocket-sized (well, for a big pocket) tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only DSM That You Need
This is a modest little book that you can fit into your pocket but it does everything that its big brother(the much more expensive, full version of the DSM IV-TR) does -- at half the price and with greater ease of use. While the unabridged DSM IV is pretty much a textbook of psychiatry, minus only treatment recommendations, this abridgement unpretentiously lists just the diagnostic categories and the relevent (concisely phrased) criteria. Professionals will find it a handy source of symptoms and diagnosis for insurance purposes. Non-professionals will find it usable for the purpose of diagnosing themselves, their spouse, their parents and problematic friends.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Great Manual To Promote Mental Disorders !!!
The DSM IV-TR is a great book to promote diseases that fit the armaments of medications that the pharmaceutical companies would like physicians to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars unplugged: reclaiming our right to die in america
unplugged delves into timely and essential subject matter with an entertaining, informative, wondrful style of writing.colby's insight to this pertinent topic is beneficial universally, as we all must confront these circumstances at some point in our lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars The right-to-die debate is once again tackled
The right-to-die debate is once again tackled; this time by a lawyer who represented Nancy Cruzan in the first right- to-die case heard by the Supreme Court. While Nancy Cruzan's struggles were chronicled in a prior book by Colby, Unplugged: Reclaiming Our Right To Die In America offers a broader perspective on the topic, moving beyond Cruzan's struggle to offer answers to legal, ethical, medical and personal issues involved in the debate. Court records, interviews and the authors' own experiences lend to the discussion of current laws, proposed changes, and their effects on society.

One of the best books I have read on alternative treatments. The chapters on Protocel were fantastic. Anyone contemplating using Protocel should definitely read this book!

The book itself is very educational, also, has a lot of information on titles of other good reads to look for as well as phone numbers and places to seek treatments.
4-0 out of 5 stars Outsmart Your Cancer Reader Review
Overall, I thought that the book presents a credible case for using alternative treatments for cancer although there are substantial areas where clarification is needed. The author, Tanya Harter Pierce, is not a doctor and states that the book is the result of extensive personal research carried out by herself after a family member was diagnosed with cancer.

Very informational. The additions in the back of the book help very much, specifically Therapeutic Class Index. All in all, a fine book especially for the purpose I am utilizing it for, veterinary technician.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource!
This is a great resource for those of us who own pets with a number of medical conditions/number of medications prescribed. It makes it much easier to understand the medications, potential side effects and drug interactions.I feel like I can have a more educated conversation with my Veterinarian about medications and supplements now that I have this resource.I really like that fact that this book contains information about supplements along with prescription medications!Very useful!
5-0 out of 5 stars Bigger is better!
When the box arrived I initially thought there must have been a mistake.I ordered 2 copies for my animal hospital and the box was big enough to hold two large city-sized phone books.Upon opening I realized the reason for the oversize box and suspect weight was that the books are considerably larger and thicker, and for good reason.More information (all the latest, of course), and larger typeset (which is helpful for all of us except maybe the newest of grads).Everything else is the same reliable Plumb we have become accustomed to going to for information throughout the day.If there is any problem at all its in that this volume is just a little too big to fit in the same spot in the "reference book drawer" in our pharmacy where the smaller version was kept.Come to think of it, the old Plumb spent most of its time on the countertop anyway! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars BEST ORGANIC CHEMISTRY BOOK
I have read and used many books on organic chemistry, both on my BS and graduate degree programs. This book has been the best ever written on the subject. The authors have treated the subject to its simplest detail to be understood by everyone. Now that I am a practicing chemist, I always look at this book as a reference. The presentation is very good and the way the chapters are organized is very neat and arranged. The topic on synthesis in action and retrosynthetic analysis is very interesting. What I find very nice are the topics on the application of the chemical principles on real life synthesis. The information are all up to date. Stuart Warren and his co authors has gone a long way and their expertise is shown in this wonderful book. Warren has been one of myfavorite chenistry authors way back to his simple books on chemical synthesis and retrosynthetic analysis. I recommend this book, not only to students, both on their undergraduate and graduate programs but also to practicing chemist and chemical engineers and all those who love and find the field of chemistry a very interesting subject and those who wants to find chemical knowledge at a glance. Truly, this is a one volume Encyclopedia on Organic Chemistry.

5-0 out of 5 stars A smart tool to review pertinent info for both the exam and clinical practice
I passed the Family Practice exam and this book was a great help! She knows how to present the right amount of appropriate information to make it useful rather than overwhelming. The summaries and tables were a big big help. I would also recommend this as a review book for anyone who just wants to brush up their basics for clinical practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Review Book
This was the best review book for me. The tables and discussion sections were concise and easy to comprehend. To state it simply, I could not have passed the adult NP exam (AANP) without this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars NP certification exam and practice preparation
By far the best tool I used to prepare for the exam and pass successfully. It condenses large amounts of information for an effective review, and includes new information I had not been exposed to while in school. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as First Aid for Step 1
I was very disappointed with this resource for CK prep. I found Step 2 secrets to be far superior. I purchased and read First Aid for Step 2 CK based on my positive experience with First Aid for Step 1. Much to my disappointment, First Aid for CK contained quite a large amount of basic information that just isn't high yield on step 2. For example, the basic ins and outs of ECG. On the exam, pertinent ECG findings are usually given, and then you're asked to make a clinical decision (e.g. next test or step in management) based on the ECG findings and other data presented. Step 2 secrets is a much more clinically oriented review of material for CK. WARNING: don't rely heavily on First Aid for CK or you'll be disappointed. USMLE world and Kaplan Qbank are probably the best review resources out there, with review books serving as supplements. Unfortunately, First Aid for Step 2 CK was not very helpful. See my review of step 2 secrets, as I consider it to be the best text resource (remember, only as a supplement to online question banks) for CK. I'm not bashing the First Aid series because many are very good books. For example, First Aid for step 2 CS is right on the money (see my review of First Aid for step 2 CS).

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
I agree with other reviewers. It doesn't come close to the usefulness of Step 1. It contains too little information considered high yield in the exam. Definitely not to be used by itself.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not essential
Unlike the step 1 First Aid book, which was simply phenomenal (not to mention vital) for studying for the exam, the First Aid for Step II CK was a so/so text. It's fairly long, and wasn't as concise or as targeted as the step I book, and took more time to really study it and attain the same degree of comfort that I had after reading the first one. Some of this could be accounted for by the sheer scope of the examination itself. Not only does this cover all of the core specialty rotations (and a fair amount of subspecialty info as well) that you will be exposed to as a 3rd year clinical clerk, but it also needs to re-cover a good portion of the step I material that has been delightfully repackaged (i.e. those yummy glycogen storage diseases that you thought were gone forever.... think again! This time, they give you the vague clinical presentation, and then ask about the enzyme).

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Medical Resource
I was introduced to this book while in the Amazon basin...It was a very handy tool for treating minor problems and emergency first-aid since medical help was hours away.I highly recommend the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have!
I recently returned from a week in Guatemala. We had a very basic health clinic set up. This book was invaluable for may things- rehydration solution, drug doses, all in an easy to use format. Although I'm an NP, this basic guide was a blessing for village medicine. ... Read more
