A "must have" for design/manufacturing engineers
I teach Product Design Engineering at Ohio State and I can honestly say that Bralla is absolutely the best single reference for working designers and manufacturing engineers that I've found. An incredible compendium of useful infoon just about any manufacturingprocess you can think of, and plenty you HAVEN'T thought of, plus chapterson Design for Assembly, materials, economic considerations - you name it.The book is a bit pricey, but considering the amount of useful informationpacked into it, it's a steal. High quantity, but average quality
This book covers a huge amount of topics related to the automation, organisation and control of production systems.
From a student point of view
Lacking important concepts from 1st edition that should have been in the chapters on production mathematical models. (Scrap, Time In Plant, etc.)Good descriptions of general machine automation processes.Good overview of NC, CNC machining, covering more in these chapters than some texts associated with only this topic.Good overview chapters of industrial robotics, PLC control and programming, in-plant material handling, manufacturing system schemes, assembly systems, quality control, Statisics, inspection and planning.Overall a very capable text.When coupled with a well developed laboratory, would be a text for a very complete college level Industrial Automation course.

If you have to get up to speed quickly...
I have been out of the industry for eleven years.In my first interview when trying to re-enter the workforce, they asked me if I knew anything about Lean Mfg principles...Duh!

Practical and Straightforward. Good diary for lean consultants
I have a number of lean books in my library--most of which are fairly solid on presenting the lean philosophy, principles andtools. All the concepts here are straightforward--very clearly presented. If you were going to launch your first lean event into an organization that is unfamiliar with lean--this would be my choice because Carreira is so practical. His background is consulting, so his chapters read like a diary (Day 1, Day 2, Day 3 etc.)for a lean implementation. He has seen a number of companies and draws from past experiences: he knows what works and how to avoid the pitfalls to achieve bottom line results. Lean is a philosophy and the biggest gains will be in the "buy-in" in the organization. From his easygoing demeanor, you can see why he has succeeding as a consultant--is humor and demeanor disarms the fear of change and fosters team participation. Debra knows and applies TOC as well as anyone including Goldratt.This book is still a key part to understanding TOC.

Good book, but stack it with others...
This is a grate book that explains how measurment indicators might confuse management, and make mistakes that really happen in buissness.In states several measurment indicators based on TOC that help in understanding what should be done in the company.

If you need to buy the book because the author is your instructor,then do so.If you want to learn how to make sound, prudent decisions as a firefighter, purchase John Norman's "Fire Officer's Handbook."The difference between the two is like reading Dr. Suess and Shakespeare.

I read various books regarding the Theory of Constraints.Except for the chapter on prerequisite trees, this book explains how to use the theory very well to solve your daily problems.It also gives you a wealth of exercises that you can use to improve your practice of the theory.

A must for management and a should for anyone else.
This book puts it all together and can lead anyone down the path of logical thinking, be it solving a problem or creating a plan. Combine the teachings of this book with the other TOC principles and you've got a recipe for success. Optical System Design
This is the exact book i needed. It is an excellent summary of optical principles, and their utilization in optical systems. The design examples are great for illustrating the underlying principles. The level is great for professionals (as a review), or for anyone wanting to learn the principles of optics design. I highly recommend this book, there are lots of references for deeper study. This would be an excellent textbook for a class in optical design.

Practical words of wisdom for optics
Fischer gives me good advice that I can look up in a book. For example, I found answers about diffraction efficiency in diffractive optics, and a lens design case study about digital camera lenses. I also enjoyed the bloopers section.This information will help me do my job. ... Read more

Can't review a book I never received
I waited 6 weeks and Amazon never sent the book so I cancelled the order and gave up.

Very good general overview
This was a great book for an overview but did not go into great depth for some of the topics. The book does have a lot of great picture and I think it is well worth the read.

Good overview for textiles
If one is studying interior design or one wants to learn about textiles, this book is very informative. This was used as a textbook for a textiles class in an interior design program.

Good starting point
I have to disagree with the previous poster. The book doesn't try to discourage the reader from getting into the retail business, it just points out that the retail business is a risky one that may not turn a profit for years. This book gives some helpful advice for would-be retailers as well as established ones, and also points you in the direction of some associations that can help (i.e., S.C.O.R.E. ). I definately reccomend it.

Very poorly written
I used this book for a graduate-level engineering course. This book is one of the worst textbooks I have seen.

First, this book is copyright 1997, and six years is a heck of a long time in this industry.Second, the book makes almost no reference to vehicle applications, which are a very important CAN applications and in fact where CAN started.For example there is no mention of SAE J1939 heavy truck bus standard, which is CAN based, and J1850 appears only once.

WARNING
Apart from the usual disclaimer for software, that the software may not work at all it reads 'Springer-Verlag or, its designee, has the right to audit your computer and electronic component usage to determine whether any unauthorised copies of this package have been made.'
