Expensive for Students, Expansive for Instructors
I have been teaching with Markel's 7th ed. for almost two years now, and I find that the book provides a springboard for all sorts of discussions into the wild world of Technical Writing. I can typically get through about three quarters of the book in a semester, and I am constantly tweaking the class to allow students more access to the material from this book.

A Master Class In Hazard Avoidance And Mitigation
"What Went Wrong?" is a well thought-out book on practical safety in the chemical processing industry. The book recounts numerous actual process plant accidents and incidents, includes causes and effects, and avoidance and mitigation practices.
Itemized Case History of Accidents in the Chemical Industry
What I like most about this book is its index and table of contents. It is easy to find a type of accident. For example, when I turned to page 291, I found an exact, simple description of the dangers resulting from the flow of a non-conducting liquid, i.e., one with a low dielectric constant --- like toluene (2.4 compared to water with a constant of 80). "The danger is that a spark could discharge between a body of liquid and grounded metal." In other words, a high voltage shock will knock you off your feet.

The book is easy to understand.
I am a computer science student (well, recent graduate), and am looking to sell similiar books.I used both this book and the Fundamentals of Physics by Halliday/Resnick/Walker.Frankly, I thought this book was very easy to understand (much more than Halliday/Resnick/Walker).I'm not sure how you could want to be a mechanical engineer but not do well with this book.I thought they made it very easy to understand and perhaps spent too much time re-explaining what was covered in a earlier chapters but you can easily skip those parts.A slightly more challenging book was the one by Halliday/Resnick/Walker because it relied more on calculus (at least my professor did) but it too was fairly obvious.I recommend either book.

Knight's Physics Volume 1-4
My first two semesters were devoted to going throughKnight's Physis's program course. The course is an attempt to provide the answer to the question: "How do you provide a physics education to a class body of 240+ students."Comparatively the textbooks were considered to be average.I would agree with the other reviewers that they tended to be "wordy" and the conceptual explanations were lacking.Many authors stress that learning physics can only be accomplished by working problems.A lot of the example problems lacked a clear explanation. I had a routine habit of referring to Serway Physic (3rd. Edition) to get a better understanding of the problems.The twice a week "online" problem assignments were extremely tedious and much of the time was devoted to the frustrations ofinputing answerson the website's graphical user interface.I provided responses to many problems and never received a word from Knight's online program representatives.Ifelt that a lot of valuable learning time was wasted with incorrect alphanumeric symbolic input.Students alway had complaints about the connection between the online problems and tests.
Resnick and Halliday is much better
I had myself learnt Physics from Resnick and Halliday which I found to be a lot more to the point. ... Read more

Weighty tome shows how engineering intersects architecture
This almost 1800 page treatise on mechanical and electrical design as it relates to architecture is one of a kind. It is not an artistic book on the subject, although some artistic ability is always needed in any aspect of building design. Instead it is a very technical book that shows how the architect must be part electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, electrician, physicist, plumber, safety specialist, and transportation engineer in order to design the modern building. And to top it all off, you need to be knowledgable of current mechanical and electrical equipment - their specifications and their costs.

An Invaluable Reference Source
That a book has gone through ten editions says something about the acceptance of that book. In the case of this book, it says that this is basically the Bible of the subject, after all it's been around since the first edition in 1935. And it's subject is basically everything not covered by the structure of the building. This includes heating, cooling, electricity, lighting, water, plumbing fixtures, even acoustics, fire protection, and for bigger buildings such things as burglar alarms, elevators and moving stairways, and more.

Excellent book to understand DSP basics
This book is the best available in market to understand the basics of Signal Processing with crisp explanations and very good mathematical treatment. Still I feel that, after reading this book one must switch to EITHER the book by Proakis and Manolakis OR the book by Oppenheim for more thorough knowledge. The knowledge gained from Prof Lathi's book makes others easy to comprehend. I would strongly recommend this book to any novice in Signal Processing domain.

Mathematically rigorous but explaining physical significance
This book clearly explains the physical significance of many phenomenon and topics that we come across in this subject. The most striking feature is that it does so from the fundamental linear differential equation and gives us very good insight of the subject and a sense of completeness . Definitely its better than Oppenheim book which deals the subject a bit more mathematical.

Better to get Oppenheim Schafer Buck
The Lathi book is fine, and covers both continuous and discrete signals, but is a little hard to read at times.A better book that covers both is the one by Oppenheim & Willsky.And if you want a much better book for the discrete side of things then get Discrete-Time Signal Processingby Oppenheim, Schafer, & Buck.

A Great Addendum to your HVAC Library.
I would recommend this book for enhancing your knowledge on modern hydronic heat systems.A great reference to assist you planning and doing a pipe-heating project.The first nine chapters are a good review of HVAC hydronic concepts and practices.The remaining five sections solve the crux of most hydronic heating domicile problems.The best practical book on the subject.

This is a very thorough and detailed guide to what seems like every aspect of hydronic heating. Both theory and practical application advice are included. It is also indispensable as a ready reference for particular problems you are seeking solutions for. The cd rom included has many useful tools for estimating and calculating heating system requirements (there is one tiresome limitation - the cd rom does not run on MacOS. Both Honest, and Dishonest, Just Like the Magic Kingdom
I can't give this book a one because it does summarize Disney's business morals well, BUT, it leaves out what is obvious, it's lack of respect for God. Disney, as this book shows, relies on pleasing the customer, not God. It's also helpful in that it does give business advice, although not totally.
Seven Keys to Success
This is a fun book, easy to read, great ideas to make your business more successful and customer friendly.I would recommend it highly and it is a great tool for a staff training or retreat.

Residential Lighting - A Practical Guide
This is an excellent practical and technical book for learning about and designing lighting for a home. It's aimed at the professional, which I appreciate as an intern architect. Part of my job is to design sophisticated lighting schemes for custom homes, which takes a lot of experience and knowledge. This book has really helped me to pinpoint the different kinds of lighting needed for each space and how to place it and specify it in a professional way for the greatest effect. Most architects take years to learn this, but I'm getting a crash course by having this resource. It's not a fluffy coffee table book, it's a technical manual that teaches HOW to properly understand and design lighting for a residence. I highly recommend it.

As a designer, I can't say enough good things about Randall Whitehead's Residential Lighting, A Practical Guide. This is his follow up to his wonderful Lighting Up! A Practical Guide which has been a staple of the design community for seven years. All the best parts of the earlier book have been retained with the addition of more than 200 photos in both color and black & white.

A Bible
This book is so complete and exhaustive that it could be called the Automotive technology Bible! But remember, this book is for the serious reader, not for the occasional reader! Buy this if you are serious about the subject.

Good material but not enough coverage
This book covers the fundamentals of project management but lacks details. It also lacks simplicity and consistency. The Critical path example discussed on p. 132 to 134 is confounding (especially the part explaining the difference between free and total slack). Green to Gold is a must-read for anyone who (a) holds a leadership position in business or is a business influencer, and (b) cares about the environment we live in.Its subtitle really best describes the book, which is probably the first (or if not, certainly the best) documentation of successful corporate environmentalstrategy on the market.

Good book for the basics, but it leaves out auto a/c charging and diagnostics.Since I bought the book specifically to learn auto a/c procedures, I wasted my money.This lack should have been explicitly noted in the publisher's blurb.

Not a handbook
I would NOT recommend this book to any electrician, engineer, or architect.It is extremely difficult to comprehend.Gaining any practical information from this book is futile. I have had the twelfth edition over ten years. I used it to study for the electricians exam.I hated it then.Since that time, I have found it to be a very poor reference book. The thirteenth edition is no better.I understand why some electrician training schools might use this book - it is very comprehensive. It would make a good reference for a classroom lesson plan, but not a direct teaching tool.If you want to learn the material in this book, get the National Electric Code Handbook (and related materials published by the NFPA) and appropriate textbooks. FYI - I am a licensed electrician and a registered professional engineer.

A patchwork monster
Another motley McGraw-Hill product. First copyrighted in 1913. The author appears to have died prior to 1976, and the book has been maintained by hired help. Don't try to use this as a textbook; treat it as a reference only. You never really know whether some item is up to date or 50 or 80 years old. Examples: There is a lot of treatment of two-phase (yup, 90 degrees) power, including at 25 hertz, and of multi-kilovolt series incandescent streetlighting, plus knob and tube wiring. Also, it is stated that the highest radio frequency in use is 30 megahertz, whereas in reality we're up to 1,000 or 2,000 times that just now. This book is a curiousity; charming if you have the cash, but if you don't, maybe you should be getting something more coherent.

Death before being dishonored.
An important and imperative work. Investigative journalisim at its best under trying circumstances. American at its core, in that it gets a tough and dirty job done. Not with the help of government, but despite it.In this Reagan era of privitizaton/trust the market place, we have a choice: trust Bush or the dollar.How could you lose?Thebook opens and closes with Col. Ted Westhusing, the definition of his alma mater, WEST POINT: DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY. Third in his class, plus a doctor of philosophy, and an exemplary record of war/peace service. Yet he met his nemesis: Iraq. For in Iraq he found a war of privitization that had nothing what so ever to do with DUTY, HONOR, or COUNTRY.It was simply about the money, or at best, cronyism.Whether it was murder or suicide, his last communication was in writing and I paraphrase, " I cannot support a mission that leads to corruption, human rights abuse and liars. No more. I cannot support corrupt, money hungry contractors, nor work for commanders only intersested in themselves. I came to serve honorably and I feel dishonored.Why serve when you cannot accomplish the mission, when you no longer believe in the cause, when your every effort and breath is met with lies, lack of support and selfishness.Life needs trust". So what comes around goes around.When a government is "elected" that produces Iraqs and Katrinas then you get the government you deserve.Col. Ted Westhusing desevered better. We, the citizenry could count on him.But in the end, he could not count on us. This book needs to be read and passed on by word of mouth.I wouln't count on the privitized mainstream press.I think there are about a total of four papers left that still have a investigative journalism department.After all, it is all about the bottom line. Bush and Friends Strike Again!
A free and democratic Iraq was supposed to become an oasis.The U.S. has committed over $30 billion to rebuild Iraq - more than the $2.4 billion (inflation-adjusted) spent on Germany after WWII, and far more than the $2 billion originally planned to rebuild Iraq.In addition, over 500 contractor employees have died trying to make Iraq a better place.Goals were rarely set, and even less often met.Yet, after three years of rebuilding, Iraqis have less power in their homes than under Saddam, oil production is about 20% below pre-Saddam days, outbreaks of easily preventable diseases like hepatitis occur for lack of clean drinking water, and thousands of Iraqis have died in sectarian conflict.
Reader make up their own mind
Blood Money is a dramatic, persuasive and meticulous work. It would be better without the biased innuendos found throughout, such as VP Chaney somehow benefiting through the government contracts with his old company, Haliburton Oil. No proof of this is offered.

Simplicity complicated
The goal of the book is extremely worthwhile: to promote simplicity.It tries to do so in a small book, about 100 pages in small sized pages.Unfortunately it fails, it does not use it own lessons and presents a complicated description of "Simplicity".In order to simplify, it (ab)uses acronyms that do not elicit the thoughts that are intended. For instance, take SHE (Simplify, Hide, Embody).Using the word SHE is hard to turn your mind to "Simplify, Hide, Embody".Then there is BRAIN (Basics, Repeat, Avoid, Inspire, Never) and SLIP (Sort, Label, Integrate, Prioritize). Simple? To present the ideas, Maeda uses a random collection of recollections, of anecdotes, of circumstantial evidence, organized around ten laws, to illustrate the points it wants to make.As you read,you can find another anecdote from your own life, another experience that can contradict his conclusion.Not all is negative, there are some gems that make the reading worthwhile.For instance, law 10, or "the one": "Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious and adding the meaningful".Imagine if presentations in meetings, conversations or written reports were to keep this law, how more productive our lives would be. As an energy auditor I'd almost call the Energy Efficiency Manual a secret weapon, except it has so many good ideas that I can't help but show it to many of the customers and prospective customers I meet. The diagrams are very useful, as is the self contained but well cross-referenced way in which each improvement measure has been written. For example, talking to the maintenance manager of a hospital, we looked at the diagrams of hot/cold deck multi-zone systems while discussing the pros and cons of upgrading a constant volume air conditioning system to a variable volume system. It is by far the most useful book on energy management that I have ever read (well, in the case of the Energy Efficiency Manual, that I have partially read - its an enormously large book!), and the ratings of each of the measures are particularly useful, along with the practical, no-nonsense approach. The book is extremely well cross referenced and Wulfinghoff has covered an enormous body of knowledge in writing the book. As someone fairly new to the field I'm grateful that he went to the effort of documenting and making available his knowledge and 30 odd years experience in the Energy Efficiency Manual. ...
