5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for teachers new to this technology!
Will's book is a great resource for teachers who are interested in introducing blogs etc. into the classroom but who may be intimidated by the technology. His book is easy to read and understand for those of us who are not as technologically advanced as of yet. I believe Will's book will be one of the greatest resources in my classroom in September. I would recommend this book to any teacher who does not want to be left behind by his/her students as technology advances.

5-0 out of 5 stars Step by Step Book for Beginners
Will Richardson displays great pedagogical style in walking the reader through the steps of seemingly complicated technological tasks. He makes learning about great tech tools for the classroom like blogs, wikis, and rss easy and exciting. He not only tells how to set them up but various ways to use them in the classroom.I had been searching for such a text and now that I've found it, I plan to use it as the main text for my grad student course about educational uses of the Internet.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Two For Effort
This book is written from the viewpoint of a flaming socialist with the attitude that anything white or European or is overly valued in American history textbooks.Loewen does have many valid points about what history textbooks omit, but the degree to which he is clearly slanted to the left is ludicrous."Lies My Teacher Told Me" could have been an amazing book, but all it did was aggrivate me and motivate me to write a 23 page paper debunking half of what the author wrote, much to the dismay of my idiotic Sociology professor. The only reason I didn't give the book 1 star is because the overall intent and effort put forth were good, but the book as a whole is just far too biased.

5-0 out of 5 stars an important book
Interesting, informative, and should be required reading for high school and college students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to SA Spellers
This book is a great guide to teaching word study to SA learners. The reading is more simplistic and easier to understand than Words Their Way while offering appropriate sorts for this stage. It gives a more in depth view of SA spellers with an excellent sequence of instruction. It's only downfall is that many of the sorts are a little too complicated or have too many headers. It also only offers one sort for each part of a stage, even though some students may need to work within a sort for more than a week.Regardless of these negative aspects, I have really enjoyed this book and it is a great resource for any teacher's or school's library. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars twenty-something Tom Wolfe
Jeremy Iversen is a talented journalist and I really did enjoy this book. That said, I couldn't shake the feeling that his subject matter wasn't worthy of his talents. Sex, drugs, random acts of cruelty--same old, same old, in the world of teens. The only thing that may come as a surprise to the reader is the complete lack of learning going on in the schools. The kids are aware of it but accept their fate; they only fight back when one among them is directly threatened in a way that would prevent graduation (The school may have done a horrible job providing an education, but it excels at instilling the empty good school--good college--good job mantra used to justify so much today.) Jeremy constructs his characters with care--and that's really what they are--a good deal of fictionalizing must have gone into turning his experience into a story structured as tightly as a tv sitcom. Still, it is a story worth exploring, as we should all be interested in these Millenials, for they will soon be the young adults leading us into what is increasingly becoming an uncertain future. The final issue I had was Jeremy's age. His sudden decision to go undercover lacked any discussion of issues related to how he would support himself, or what he did between the ages of 21 and 24 (Obviously he wrote a book because it's listed here on Amazon). That is a gaping hole and it bothers the reader. Also, because of my work I meet about 150 people in the 18-25 age group per year. I've been at my job for 11 years. I can assure you the 25 year-olds are generally just as clueless as the kids right out of high school. I almost wished Jeremy had chosen to jump onto the Wall Street "track", as he calls it, and write about that. I think arrogance and narcissism of people we believe to be adults would have made a more compelling story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than any TV show story
Some days it seems like everywhere you look some adult is spouting off about the problems of our youth: teen sex, teen pregnancy, teen drugs, our failing schools, and on and on. To these experts in far-away offices, the answers seem clear cut: more rules, more programs, more standards. That's gotta work, right?
1-0 out of 5 stars Written like a bad soap opera
I really wanted to enjoy this book, but it was written in a very dramatic style that made me care so little about the kids he wrote about. Ultimately, his attempt to emulate Cameron Crowe comes off as exactly that - someone trying to be something he is not, and that overshadows his "undercover" work too much to make this an enjoyable read. Get it from your library and save yourself the cash if you want to read it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Responsible Teaching
Research Professor Derek Bok's "Our Underachieving Colleges" (2006, hardback) presents a new way of thinking about education in American colleges.Understanding that his presentation could create academic criticism, Bok builds his argument upon a substantial foundation of convincing research (with 49 pages of endnotes).
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, complex look at the problems of undergrad education
In this book, Derek Bok does an incredible job of laying out the shortcomings in undergraduate education. However, he does this without failing to acknowledge the good being achieved. As a former college president Dr. Bok speaks from a position of authority on the subject. The problems he identifies he backs up with thorough, thought provoking research. He does not just leave the problems as they stand but offers helpful, realistic suggestions for improvement. The greatest strenght of Dr. Bok's book is that he appreciates the complexity of the problem. The issues he raises as well as the solutions he proposes are not simplistic answers to superficial issues. This book is a must read for anyone involved in education. On top of all that, it is well written and thus a pleasure to read.In fact, I recommend it for anyone who enjoys reading a well written book.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'd give it zero stars if I could
I understand that the typical Psychology Book is not exactly a riveting novel, but good god, this was way too much.I have never been more annoyed with a text book- I would never voluntarily have read this garbage! She would have had a much shorter book if we weren't forcefed her life story at every possible chance she could insert it in.This woman is very full of herself...very full. There were a lot of typos, a lot of redundent sentences, and a lot of crap we didn't need!I hope for the rest of the psychology students of the world that this author reads these reviews and vows never to write another text book again. If I ever have a class that requires another text book by her, I will drop without hesitation! And change majors the next morning!

1-0 out of 5 stars HORRABLE
In my 4 years as an undergraduate i have never read such a poorly written book. She has more typo's then I have including multiple references to the NEO-PR (NEO-PI-R). She incorrectly summarizes groundbreaking research (i.e. Ceci, Rosenblum, & Debruyn, 1999). Her feminist agenda flows freely all over this book along with usless stories about her self that dont add to the text. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BOOK FOR YOUR CLASS. You and your students will regret it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Increasing understanding of Aging
Hellen Bee is able to carry one through the years of adulthood through many avenues. Using scientific studies she interprets the data in meaningful ways. Inclusion of personal accounts and her conversational style make the reading interesting. The book continually ties previous ideas to new concepts giving a nice continuity. I especially enjoyed her occasional insertions of the not-so-scientific spiritual aspects of the adult experience, which I was not expecting in a textbook. My ideas of what it means to grow old were challenged and changed during the reading of this book. Some myths of adulthood are adeptly smashed making the thought of aging not such a frightful one. The only criticism I would include is that occasionally the point being made was not clear to me and a few conclusions seem to have contradictory statements in following chapters. That may be expected in the field of psychology, however. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Totally Unhelpful!
I bought this book because a reviewer said it would teach people with Asperger's syndrome how to make and manintain eye contact. It doesn't. It just says you should make and maintain eye contact, it doesn't teach you how. This book only tells you what society expects of you, so if you already know what society expects of you, but just cannot figure out how to do it smoothly, don't buy this book. If you already know stuff like, "pull up your pants before coming out of the bathroom", don't buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Social Skills
This book is a must have for anyone whose life is touched by someone with autism.Myles teaches her readers that teaching social skills is not an insurmountable task.It just requires a conscious effort by all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally! A simple solution!
One of the missing components to the concept of teaching "social skills" to children and young adults on the autism spectrum, is that instructors focus on textbook manners instead of teaching REAL life practical knowledge. The Hidden Curriculum explains that every society has unstated rules, the things that no one explains to you, but which you are supposed to pick up somehow on your own. Remember how awkward and geeky most of us were in Jr. High? And there were always the "cool kids" who somehow knew just how to dress, just what to say and meanwhile you (and I) were clueless? It's because they understood the unstated rules, they had an unkanny ability to pick up the exact tools necessary for "coolness." As we grow up, we learn better how to adapt to social situations, we know how to behave in a variety of settings, even perhaps cross culturally. Adults grow into a sense of ease in our surroundings, we know what we are supposed to do. Now, imagine that you never got over that awkward phase, you were perpetually spending your life roaming around trying to figure out the world with little to go on. No one pulled you aside and explained, "This is how it is, Kid." That's exactly what it's like for our kids on the spectrum. Well, here comes The Hidden Curriculum to the rescue! Not only does it explain many of these "unstated rules" (many of which are humorous--who doesn't know you should take tuna in your school lunch because it stinks? many of our AS kids!) It also goes beyond to explain how to uncover them. It highlights how crucial it is for us as parents, as educators and just as a society to literally pull our AS folks aside and say, "These are the rules." For example, "Don't pick your nose." Good advice right? But p-leeeze, everybody picks their nose! (Okay, not me, but everybody else! :-) What we really need to teach our kids is not, don't pick your nose, but not to pick their nose where people can see them. Sound silly? Our children and friends on the autism spectrum just need for us to teach them one little tidbit like this every day and they'll find their way with increasing ease. And wouldn't you have liked someone to pull you aside in Jr. High and done the same for you? Let's equip our kids with the real skills to make their way in the world. The Hidden Curriculum does just that! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars .So far, so interesting
I love the philospohy behind this book, but Dr. Marshall goes one step further and adds the golden element of classroom testing. When he tells me I will need to use a particular strategy with about 2 % of my students, I feel confidence that this material has truly been tested in real situations.Part of the problem with many discipline programs that aim to address classroom management without rewards, tokens, and such is they often talk down to teachers for using token systems, but offer only theories and clinical data as proof without workable ideas for in the classroom.I am trying out Dr. Marshall's program and will see how far it takes me, but after the first two introductory lessons on the ABCD heirarchy, this weird quiet settled into my room, like the idea of democracy had just sunk into my students heads.Very heady stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars No More Class Store or Missed Recess
I purchased this book after an extremely challenging year of behavior problems in first grade. As a teacher who had previous success using rewards (giving plastic money that could be redeemed in a class store) and punishment (taking away recess time), this new class had so many problems that nothing seemed to work! During the summer, I read everything on behavior management I could find in preparation for my new third grade class and found this book while searching the web. Needless to say, this past year was the best year of teaching I've had in my short career of five years. Using the daily class meetings--the students' favorite part of the day--to solve problems and asking disruptive students to tell me "their level," I found that most problems went away quickly and students didn't get resentful of me because they had to reflect on how they were acting. Using the agenda for students to write down issues that bothered them was a great way to deal with tattling. I also linked the system with students who would forget homework. Rather than punish them, I would give them the Level 1 Essay to reflect on why they forgot their homework and what they could try so they could remember it. It worked! I also recommend buying "Positive Discipline in the Classroom" (Nelson) as a companion to this book if you want more step-by-step instructions for the classroom meeting. It picks up where Dr. Marshall's book leaves off regarding class meetings, especially on how to introduce it at the beginning of the year. One more thing: parents LOVE this system and will love you for using it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Civilized Alternative
Marshall makes a compelling case for giving children tools to evaluate their own behavioral options and make positive choices.I am looking forward to empowering my kindergarteners to be their best selves.

5-0 out of 5 stars A House Divided
"The Shame of the Nation: The Restoration of Apartheid Schooling in America" will challenge any illusion the reader holds that America has left her divided and racist history far behind. Truly a heart rending account of apartheid schooling that bridges the larger social implications of racial and economic disparity with the daily life and dreams of our children.

Promises made are not always promises kept.We all say that we want education to be a priority for all.Do we all really support that? The Shame of the Nation exposes the compliancy that many Americans have when it comes to actually promoting equal opportunities for all.We want our professional athletes and Olympic contestants to be able to compete and train in the best facilities and with the best practices. This enables them to reach their fullest potential and beyond. We should all be willing to support this endeavor for the education of all of our students. This book helps us to walk in another's shoes and truly empathize with the inequaties that so many children must deal with.Reading this book should open ones eyes to how many future adult American are set up for failure.Brown vs. Board of Education may have imposed laws for equality but it must go further into the mindset of funding agencies. If we are truly to become equal, we must alleviate the barriers that cause the fragmentation of opporutnity and success.
5-0 out of 5 stars Opened my eyes to problems in our public education system
This book explains how racial segregation in the public schools has been getting worse and why that is a problem. If children interact with other races at a young age, they're less likely to have racist ideas as adults. When people extol the legal and political victories that allowed integrated schools, Kozol finds it ironic because even though apartheid is not the law, current public policy discourages integration.Well-meaning parents in affluent school districts lobby against any zoning change that would include children from poorer areas. The result is that school districts are unintentionally set up to segregate the poor from the middle class and dark-skinned from the ligher-skinned.This makes our society seem horribly unfair to the children going through the segregated, inferior schools.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading made easy, even for a 4-year-old
Wow! I can't say enough good things about this book. I purchased it less than 2 months ago and my son is over halfway through already. I don't normally believe in teaching kids to read at such a young age, but my 4-year-old had already learned all his letters and the sounds they make and was begging me to teach him to read. So I downloaded the first two chapters of this book off the author's website and was so impressed, I promptly bought the book. This book makes teaching reading sooooo easy, even for a parent with zero training in education. Each page takes only a couple of minutes to do, which means you can make your lessons really, really brief (like less than 5 minutes a day) and still make significant progress. To keep the child's interest, each chapter has illustrated short stories that grow increasingly complex as the child advances. Thanks to do this book, my child is reading really well already and teaching him has been a real joy for me. But don't take my word for it- go to The reading lesson website, download the first two chapters, and see for yourself.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, Effective and Inexpensive
I think this is the best book one can buy for a small child. It isvery simple to follow and needs no learning time for a parent.
5-0 out of 5 stars WoW!My 3 year old can read!
I bought this book to preview before starting our kindergarten homeschool program. My 3 yr old ds was so interested that I showed him the first page and went over the instructions. I didn't think he'd be too interested at this point. Boy was I wrong :) He loves his reading lesson everyday and though it has only been a few weeks, he is already sounding out simple words with ease. This book is well organized and simple without being boring. You can go as fast or slow as your child needs.I can't recommend it enough. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Teaching With the Brain in Mind
I'm rating this book a 3 based upon my need for the information.I was looking for a more condensed version of information in order to quickly gleen and gather information for a workshop. However, the book includes good information, especially for newer teachers.

Fabulous book!I am a teacher and am recommending it to every teacher I know.I think it's a great book for every parent to read! It would be wonderful if "those government people" who make the many many many standards would read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mixed review, but has some useful info
I had an interest in the brain and learning and bought a couple of books, including this one.It sat on my shelf until last week due to time required elsewhere--or so I told myself. The principal at my school engaged me in a conversation on the topic as she is currently reading the book.(It was nice to find someone who shares this interest, as most others get that "glazed" look when I bring the subject up.)Well, I was motivated to begin the book and went right home to read it.Now, I am a skeptic at heart and need to "see things for myself"; I do not buy into things hook, line, and sinker.I found the writing style of this author to be a little lacking and I have several spots where I jotted down notes in the margins when I really disagreed with some things. So, I certainly would not treat this book as the Bible on the brain related to learning. However, I did get many good ideas to try out in the classroom and I am truly looking forward to getting back to school to implement them. If just two or three of these ideas stand the test of time and serve to improve my teaching, the book will have been worth its price and the time invested in reading it. The author does recommend certain "atmosphere" guidelines so, I suppose, that is touchy-feely; however, most of these ideas make sense.A child will not perform to potential when he/she perceives threat, whether it be fear of risk-taking/being wrong, fear of losing the esteem of peers or being mocked, etc.Feeling threatened, to whatever degree, creates stress; stress does not promote optimal learning.I also found that this book affirmed some of my current practices such as getting children up and moving frequently.I will now be sure to do this even more often; it is easy to do and takes little time.Music will definitely be used more wisely in my classroom in addition to movement.I have begun reading How the Brain Learns by Sousa now and I ordered two more "brain" books.I am almost done with Sousa's book and I like it even more than this one. While few people (even colleagues) share this interest with me, those reading this review most likely do.With that in mind, I do recommend this book as it has lots of useful info and ideas but would recommend How the Brain Learns even more. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Enthusiastic Review
Over the years, I have purchased countless "learning guides" for my two daughters. We always started with the best intentions but quickly became bored and found an excuse to try something else.
5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny!Highly recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Golden Dancer
In the movie Inherit the Wind, the story of Golden Dancer is related to the audience.Golden Dancer was a beautiful and expensive wooden rocking horse that a family bought for its child after saving for it.The first time the child rode the horse, it collapsed as the wood was rotten to the core;so, is the DuFour premise as found on page 37.His conclusion that all students can achieve at the same level (learn specified topics) is asinine. He argues that all that is needed for struggling students is more time and support. He refuses to take into account intelligence and student effort (responsibility) in his equation. If his premise has any chance of coming true, teachers will have to dumb down what they teach to the lowest common denominator. Additionally, he and his colleagues lump all "traditional schools" into the same problem heap. His approach is simplistic and insulting.I would give this book zero stars, but that is not an option. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars For learning about ABA and relating to school you cannot beat this book...
My title states it all.The 7th edition trumps the phenomenal 6th edition in it's inclusion of IDEA 2004/NCLB concepts. It is well worth the price difference between this book and most ABA books.

4-0 out of 5 stars technical lingo
The only thing I really did not like about this book was it had a lot of technical verbage that tends to put one to sleep. The examples and scenarios were helpful in presenting the content. ... Read more
