4.5 Stars... One of the best guides to colleges
The Princetown Review publishes a number of college search-related books, including the "Complete Book of Colleges" and this one. This book is essentially a distilled version of the "Complete Book", and frankly a lot more useful.
Our family's favorite college guide
This is the best college guide for students with SAT scores above 1100. I don't reccomend it for students will lower scores because it concentrates on schools that expect a higher SAT.

Some good information, but waaaaay watered down
This book is 692 pages and, I swear, it could be 69. The chapters are very tedious to read, though there is some useful information in it and ideas that anyone interested in the topic needs to know, but it seems like there'd have to be a more interesting and less repetitive (not to mention cheaper) way to do it. Typical dry, dry, dry textbook (the sole exception being the accounts by real people of their experiences with family members with special needs..those were very interesting and moving). ... Intuitive, clear and concise
James Johnson's Introduction to Fluid Power is the kind of book students want. There is a lot to like about this book: First off, the language used is not the "expert talking down to you" tone that many college texts seem to enjoy (and students hate). Each concept is presented in plain, logical, and easy to understand terms. There is no abundance of 10-cent words and aloof language for the sake of sounding superior. That isn't to say the topic is "dumbed-down" at all, it is just easy to read and written in a plain-speaking manner that makes the reader feel like he's listening to a lecture by a competent, knowledgeable, down-to-earth, and enthusiastic speaker. James obviously knows his subject intimately, understands is fully, and knows where students may have confusion or misunderstanding and he works hard to make it clear as to what is right and what is wrong. It is rare to find an instructional text where the author remembers what it is like to be new to the topic, outside of the "For Dummies" series and similarly styled books. This book possesses that level of intuitive simplicity. This is the clearest and easiest to read and understand college text that I have ever used.Read more

I've seen better
The tenth edition is not very well organized. Overall, a very boring book.

Okay, but other books are out there.
Like I said in a precious review, I like National University, but they could have chosen a different book.I am Caucasian, white, Christian, heterosexual, male, with blonde hair and blue eyes, and let me tell you, this book will make it seem that the whit people in this country are racist bigots.And that we are trying to indoctrinate every single child that comes to America while keeping all the other people in lower classes.That is how I felt. This book wasn't too bad, considering it is a textbook.If you're forced to read it for class, take heart!It's not too boring--once you get started, it actually moves pretty quickly, and you will learn a lot.If this isn't required for a class, I would not suggest curling up in front of the fireplace with this book, or, really, reading it at all, unless you're really into learning more about the basics of American Education. ... I'm sorry, but 6+1 equals 7. Just kidding- I understand why she called her book that. This is the best writing book I have come across for primary grades. Easy to use lesson plans, examples of student work, and book title suggestions all make this the perfect writing resource. Practical & Informative
The title of this book pretty much spells it out: Dr. Sousa explains how brains learn.Considering the subject, the text is very readable--enough to recommend this book to anyone who wants an understanding of how we are able to retain information.It covers the entire gamut, from the basics of biology to the subtler aspects of the active mind.
Educator-friendly
This book is an excellent resource for educators.It is easily adapted to classroom use no matter what level is being taught.Great insights to hemisphere preference, transfer, critical thinking, teaching strategies.Even the biology and physiology is palatable.This book would lend itself well as a resource for inservicing teachers with its many practioner's corner activities.I recently read Jensen's Teaching With the Brain in Mind and, while I found that book to be a good one, this book if FAR more useful.Every teacher will find easily adapted activities to put to immediate use.Highly recommended.

Great Reading
Classrooms That Work has a multitude of ideas that actually work in the classroom to help students become better readers and writers.

Great resource
This book is written in a reader-friendly format. It provides many useful strategies which are easily adapted to individual classrooms. The authors reference specific books which lend themselves to cited strategies. ( Some books will prove hard to come by as they are out of print, however.) Carefully read, her "best methods" approach, "research-based" book is neither supported, cited nor properly footnoted within the confines of her book. A wealth of information
Finally, I was required to a buy a book that I will actually use again.Both pre-student and veteren teachers will enjoy this book.It contains a wealth of strategies for teaching kids how to write. BEST RESOURCE FOR GED SUCCESS!!!
I am a vocational counselor helping adults return to school to learn a new career. Most have been out of school for 10-30 years. This tool helps them recover years of ability lost to non-use, but most especially to score much higher on their entrance exams to the colleges, which greatly reduce the number of remedial classes they have to take to bring their skills up enough to enter a degree program. In addition, those that dropped out of High School have been able to get their GED within as little as a week, or the time it takes to get scheduled into the local testing center (usually at your local Community College). It has been the single most important resource for nearly every student I have, and has proven its worth time and time again. You cannot lose with this one!

You need this book
This book is a must-have for anyone writing a college level or above paper.I've found that it's better used as a reference, not as the kind type of book you sit down and read.One warning, it is a manual, so it's pretty dry - dry, but necessary.

This book is the Bible for Historians!
I was instructed by several of my past professors that this book would be the guiding light in regards to submitting & creating scholarly materials in my academic writing matriculation.They were right, this book regardless of its many editions has been in my possession for the last 6-7 years.Academians of all concentrations when it comes down to the publishing of Termpapers, Thesis, or Dissertations, you really cannot go wrong with this Chicago-style format.This book made assessing materials, writing papers, citations, proper documentation, and even grading essay papers as a college instructor an enjoyable experience.However, as a undergraduate and graduate student I was introduced to this bible.Now I am entertaining the idea of future editing. I recomment this book to all of my students and colleagues alike!

See Your Son or Your Students Here
The library at the college where I work puts out a list of new books they have purchased in our area once per month, and this book was on the psychology list back in January.I thought it looked interesting and picked it up then, thinking it might have some good things to say about a book I'm writing about men and depression.I finally picked it up and started reading it last week, and finished it in less than a week.I really enjoyed the authors' styles of writing which made some of the technical information more accessible and easier to understand, which to me means it would be a great resource for students studying education and for parents of boys of all ages.
A teacher's review
More informative than 'Boys and Girls Learn Differently,' 'The Minds of Boys' is a fascinating look into the specific reasons why boys are doing so poorly in school nowadays. Very, very awfulif you did not know - Boys are the overwhelming majority of special education students, are more likely to drop out, and are much less likely to attend college.
A needed step forward for boys:
I really sympathize with Michael Gurian.I felt much the same way about the failures of the industrialized education system in the 1950s that he described a couple of decades later.It's set up to fail boys, and has gotten worse over the past several decades as men teachers have been driven out.

Love it, so I have to buy it...
I'm currently facing the end of my first year teaching, and I'm already looking forward to the new beginnings of next year.As a "newbie", I picked this book up from my school's professional library and fell in love with its conversational writing style and practical ideas.Frustrated by the fact that I can't write in the school's copy, I'm now buying my own.You should too.

Great book for new teachers!
This is a very great, practical, realistic book.It is a very easy read, and is only 120 pages total.If you already know alot about reading comprehension, it is nothing earth-shattering, and you may only pick up a few things from it.But, if you are a relatively new teacher, this book could help you significantly.Tovani's writing is very simple, easy to follow, and straightforward, and you can tell she is still a classroom teacher and not some out-of-touch researcher, since all her tips are very practical.Even if you already know alot about comprehension, this book will probably give you a few new things to think about, and it can easily be read in one weekend.It will not be a waste of your money!!

"Poverty" Misunderstood.
Let me start off by mentioning all the positive elements of this work (of which there are not many). In the beginning, the author shares accurate Census figures about poverty along with insight that it is a relative condition which applies to all races and creeds. She also recommends that educators should teach and strengthen rather than praise and condemn. From here, however, the work slips into the abyss. A Great Start
I work in a large middle school which hit the 50% level of students in poverty a few years ago. The majority of our poverty students are white, while the number of African-American students is less than 5%.The percent of Hispanic students in poverty in our school/community is growing.Ruby Payne's description of students and families in poverty fits our school to a large degree.Our entire corporation has been exposed to her materials, we've had Ruby as a guest presenter and our entire middle school staff has studied her book. We continue to incorporate much of what her materials recommend.We are having good success with this endeavor, and like anything in education, it is a work in progress.
A Must Read for any...
This is a must read for all teachers, pastors, doctors, lawyers,who deal with various social levels and just about anyone else who feels they can't understand why poor people are poor and stay that way generation after generation.

Student view of research
I am so pleased to have had the opportunity to study this book. It is extremely well wtitten, has explicit examples and provides a menu of wonderful supplimentary materials. Johnson and Christensen have reached the perfect meld of professional presentation and comprehensible material. Not only that, they are accessible for further elaboration. With the purchase of this book, the reader has a combination of knowledge and dedication to the education of research. Reading Specialist
This is a very helpful book for ESL Kindergarteners!I have all the Words Their Way books and have used them at every grade level in my elementary school.

A MUST for K-2 teachers.
Like the other Words their Way materials, this volume continues the wonderful tradition of combining excellent teaching ideas with theblack line masters so you can use the strategies immediately.This level is especially appropriate for students learning letter/sound relationships.It gives dozens of poems and stories which have sorts to support teaching them.There are old faithfuls such as "It's raining, it's pouring" to new poems that teach phonemic awareness, rhyming, visual discrimination and sight words. What works in Schools
I have been a classroom teacher for 25 years. In that time, I have seen many trends in educational philosophy. Finally, Marzano has written a book that addresses research based methods of instruction that actually are proven to increase student achievement. He addresses three key areas: School-Level Factors, Teacher-Level Factors, Student-Level Factors, and a section on how to implement these factors into classoom instruction. Marzano states,"Thirty-five years of research provides remarkably clear guidance as to the steps schools can take to be highly effective in enhancing student achievement."I have found that the researched based information that Marzano provides about each of these key areas to be invaluable in the instruction of our students. Using Parker Palmer's The Courage to Teach
I was introduced to Palmer's book by a participant in a series of workshps I give on Teaching, Learning, and Technology. This participant said that my coverage of pedagogic and technologic issues would be augmented by dealing with the personal factors a teacher brings to a course. Having read Palmer sveral times as I offer these workshops, I can say that it is probably the single most important text I have found in my extensive review of literature on teaching and learning. This opinion is supported by the comments of people in my workshops, who universally agree that reading it has changed their approach to teaching in a positive way. I cannot recomment it more highly.

Gets better as it goes....?
I'll preface this by saying that I'm a university teacher who cares deeply about teaching, which I guess must be why this book was recommended to me in the first place. The early chapters I found simply intolerable, heavily reliant on unexamined truistic claptrap about self-knowledge, the soul, etc, etc. The whole book is overwritten and florid, like the inside of a greetings card. It is hard to be genuinely profound in that sort of prose, and I wished that Parker, who is clearly a wonderful and thoughtful teacher, had had the courage to write in something approximating the language of normal speech.
Takes Courage to Read It!
A moving, poetic, and inspiring work on the art, profession, and calling of teaching. "I am a teacher at heart, and there are moments in the classroom when I can hardly hold the joy" (p. 1). Palmer builds a theoretical framework of teaching based on integrity, authenticity, humility, community, hope, and love. Offers great hope to those temporarily mired in the minutia of teaching, as well as a frighteningly stark contrast for those not truly called to teach.
