2-0 out of 5 stars Too many errors, poor format, index lacking
I am studying for the PMP and have NOT sat for the test yet. I read this book (cover to cover), read the PMBOK-2005, and another book called 'PMP in Depth' (P. Sanghera).
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Reading to Pass PMP Exam
I bought and borrowed many books to study for the PMP exam and this was the BEST book, both in the material it covered and the way in which the material was presented. It is one of the few that take your through the project management process as you would really experience it, from project inception to closeout. Most other books geared toward the PMP exam organize the material based on the PMI knowledge areas, which have so much overlap it becomes confusing. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. I passed the exam using this book and the quizes in Rita Mulcahy's PMP Exam Prep, which follows the knowlege areas. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The First Days of School: How to be an Effective Teacher
Amazon was great as is this book. It really gives those wishing to be teachers a great view of things they should know...
4-0 out of 5 stars Charming man, practical advice
I'm new to education. This book is very, very well read among educators. Looking at it with my fresh eyes, and with a need to quickly grab useful info for my 1st day at school I thought that:
3-0 out of 5 stars Put "Elementary Teacher" in the title and I'd give it 5 stars
If I were going to rate Harry Wong's book based on his title's implied audience of all teachers, I would be forced to give it 1 star. This book is specifically geared towards elementary teachers only and more specifically to ones who can't possibly have earned a teaching degree yet.Giving this book to someone with teaching credentials would be equivalent to giving a certified mechanic a three-hundred page manual on how to rotate tires.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dual Language
As a dual-language elementary teacher it is important that I teach my students the meaning of specific words in the subjects they have to learn in order to get the meaning. This book allows me to concentrate on the meaning, context and usage of words in the different subjects I teach rather than having to look for the words and then do what I described. It has also helped me build a stronger vocabulary and made me a better teacher for my students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Organized into 11 subject areas and 4 grade-level categories
Building Background Knowledge For Academic Achievement: Research On What Works In Schools by Robert J. Marzano (Senior Scholar, Mid-Continent Research for Education and Learning, Aurora, Colorado and Associate Professor, Cardinal Stritch University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin) discusses how two combined approaches - sustained silent reading and careful study of subject-specific vocabulary terms - can help young adults overcome weaknesses in background knowledge that would otherwise undermine their educational pursuits, from elementary to high school. In addition to the outlined principles for a sustained silent reading program, and effective vocabulary instruction, over 7,923 actual vocabulary terms have been culled for presentation from national standards documents and other publications, organized into 11 subject areas and 4 grade-level categories. A superb home schooling, self-study, or curriculum supplementary guide, highly recommended for parents, educators, tutors, and studious individuals seeking to hone the tools that maximize their comprehension skills.

3-0 out of 5 stars A lot of truth, but also a lot of willful oversight
Kohn leads off with some solid observations. Some children are given what seems to them and their parents to be a lot of homework. It is often more than the rule of thumb guideline of 10 minutes per day per grade. And, as Kohn points out, that rule of thumb has never been so subjected to any empirical test of reasonableness.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good Ideas, Poor Presentation
In The Homework Myth, Alfie Kohn has some good things to say.Take this (from p. 59): "People are active meaning makers. They are not passive receptacles into which knowledge, or skills, or dispositions can be poured."This is a powerful statement which has wide implications in the field of education. And, in fact, Mr. Kohn has a number of other good things to say in this book beyond his insistent calls to eliminate homework. But he does little with his big ideas. They are hidden beneath his avowed purpose in this book: to convince us that homework is a bad idea. But, no matter how you feel about Mr. Kohn's thesis, it is a bitter pill to swallow since his tone is so stridently negative and he falls into the same traps that he accuses the supporters of homework of sliding into.
2-0 out of 5 stars A Teacher's Point of View
As a second grade teacher with children of her own, I have to say that I disagree with the idea that homework is not a "valuable" educational experience. The issue of how valuable an experience it is happens to be a moot point. The true value of homework is in having a task, being responsible for doing that task, and doing it to the best of one's ability. It is also valuable to learn that sometimes we have to do things we don't want to do.My 2 cents... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful, Refreshing Child Development Book
Finally, a book that offers sensible and realistic approaches to child development which departs from "mythical" ideas of past and archaic culture. Luckily, this volume isn't afraid to address the homogenous fallacies that have plagued our society and discusses significantly the exploration of truly modern theories embraced around the world. People of all walks of life, education, and backgrounds will rejoice in an important concept that this book teaches: genuinely nurturing children as opposed to treating them like pets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the Best
Beginnings and Beyond is still the best Early Childhood Education text out there.

1-0 out of 5 stars Moral people beware
If you have a conservative, moral or Christian bone in your body, this book will sicken you beyond your wildest imagination. If you fall into any of the above described categories, then this book will classify you as a "European male," or of "European Ancestory".This book preaches strongly a so called "diversity" but if you are a white male the "diversity" of opinions stops.(unless of course you decide to agree with the author.)And if you are a Catholic, you have even more to digest, as the book reaks of anti-Catholicism. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Perspective
I first bought this book 1.5 years ago when I was researching colleges for my oldest son.It changed the way I looked at selecting colleges from my prior misconceptions that "bigger is better" (like large state schools) and "it has to have a well-known name to be any good."Pope succeeded in convincing me that not only are there invaluable advantages to smaller-size schools but that there is definitely something to be said for "liberal arts & science" institutions that offer a well-rounded curriculum.I was able to relax then because my son had no idea what he wanted to pursue. As a result of reading the book, my son is now attending Cornell College in Iowa where he is getting a wonderful education in small classes with caring instructors and an administration that "took me by the hand," upon his initial arrival as a freshman, & addressed all my fears and concerns about leaving my son with a bunch of strangers 4 hours away.Because the book includes little quantitative information (%'s of in- vs out-of-staters, tuition costs, % of students who graduate/return sophomore year/go to graduate school, etc.) you will need to supplement this book with another, such as the Fiske guide, to give you a basis of comparison across schools.Even if you don't select any of the schools mentioned, it is worth a read if for nothing else other than a refreshing perspective.

3-0 out of 5 stars No schools listed in the west
Wish I had known that the book focused on schools on the east coast, in the midwest, and in the southeast. No California schools are listed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of information to consider and is thought provoking
I have a daughter ready to apply to colleges this fall and have found this book very helpful in planning and sorting through the myriad of information out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice tool for new teachers.
This book is a practical resource for new secondary teachers. The authors discuss classroom set-up, student resources, and behavior problems. There are many ideas ready for application in your own classroom and no boring or unnecessary narratives that most classroom management books have.
5-0 out of 5 stars Harry K. Wong Implements Research of Evertson
In his video series "The Effective Teacher" Part II: The First Days of School, Harry Wong cites the work of Carolyn Evertson and how he implements her research in the classroom:Wong says "Now, why do I assign seats? Now, you may know the name Carolyn Evertson. She is arguably the leading authority on classroom management. She did her work at the Univ. of Texas, Austin campus, many years ago. They wrote a book called Classroom Management for Elementary Teachers and a book called Classroom Management for High School and Junior High School Teachers. They went out and they looked at thousands and thousands of very effective teachers, and they went out and they looked at thousands and thousands of very ineffective teachers, and this is what they discovered. They discovered that effective teachers assign seats on the first day of school..."He shows a graphic of the covers of the two books. This is one of the books he refers to.Harry Wong is the author of the book The First Days of School.Anyone who liked The First Days of School, therefore, might be interested to read this resource that Harry Wong found to be useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars From 2 Points of View
First and foremost, I am sorry that two readers have not had a positive experience from this book; however, they sound like they are 90 year old teachers who have forgotten why they entered the profession of teaching in the first place. Fill out the retirement papers and go home!
5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!!Judge it for yourself!!
I wish I had this years ago.My kids love it and soaking up everything we do.This half of the year is going great!!I've never had a class so interested in anything!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for teachers who WANT to learn
For those great teachers out there, they will find they naturally use many of the strategies in this book. This books puts them all in one place and give you more ideas as well as the research to back them up.I do feel sorry for the rater that is having this approached forced on him or her. I am afraid to say that learner centered education is far from "trendy" nor is a constructivists approach to learning.Just throwing the books at the teachers not modeling the approach for even in teacher education, the adults should also construct meaning in their learning.I do agree with the reader that some teaching methods take more time upfront and there is a lot of pressure on teachers to hit all the standards but if retention is key, spend a little more time on the front end and they will retain it after a test rather than just for the test. This book is great if you want 20 specific ideas for injecting new way to learn in your classroom. It is not an all to nothing approach, just try one new thing while maintaining you own teaching style. Those teachers who are stuck in there own methods and fearful of sharing control of the learning with their students will have a hard time with this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have a child with autism in your life, you absolutely must read this
As a parent with a child on the spectrum, I found this a wonderful resource. I loved Notbohm's clear and concise language and her insightful observations are on target. It was as informative as it was positive and empowering. And I've found that building strategies around her observations actually work! Highly recommended, especially if you need to see the positive in raising a child on the spectrum.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Anyone Affected by Autism!
This wonderful book explains in "down-to-earth" language what every child with autism wishes you knew.I learned so much while reading this book that I decided to give copies to everyone in our family. My 2-year old grandson is autistic and this book helped me to understand what he is feeling. As soon as I finished reading this book by Ellen Notbohm, I started reading "1001 Things. . . " also written by this author. You'll be glad you read this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars practical qnd classroom friendly
This book is a wonderful resource book for any Language Arts teacher. The key to successfully using it is to find out what the child needs to learn to do to become a better reader. Then Mrs. Beers has listed what to do, and even shows how it has worked with real students.I know the activities could be used with first graders and on up.I taught Reading Recovery for ten years and have studied struggling readers for forty years, and I know these resources will work.I also like the authors she used to gather her research. She didn't just research through books, but also practiced these herself.Mrs. Beers has included places for busy teachers to go easily to find the materials to use.All Language Arts teachers shoud use this book.
