5-0 out of 5 stars Sensible Sensory Approaches
People on the autism/Asperger's (a/A) spectrum contend with a wide array of sensory issues, one of which is sensory integration. For many people on the spectrum, sorting out relevant stimuli from the extraneous can be difficult.Imagine being in a classroom and being distracted by the odors in the room, such as those from people and materials.Imagine having heightened sensory modes so that fire drills and alarms, as unpleasant as they are, are amplified.Dr. Temple Grandin equated fire drills to "dental drills in the ear," which is a very apt and accurate description.
5-0 out of 5 stars Reader-friendly resource
Sensory integration is well worth understanding because it is estimated that 20% of all students in the U.S. are affected by sensory integration issues. There is little offered to teachers who might have to work with children whose ability to learn is often clouded by affects of stimuli.Carol Stock Kranowitz is the author of one of the best books on the topic called "The Out of Sync Child."Stacey Szklut, occupational therapist, discusses practical advice on how to assist learning for children with sensory integration problems.
5-0 out of 5 stars Another winner
I highly recommend all books by Carol Stock Kranowitz on this topic. This book is another winner. Some of her books have been translated into Spanish as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, clear, and readable introduction to HPT/HPI
Like the other reviewers, I find this book to be exceptionally clear and well-written, and provides a great introduction to the key concepts of human performance improvement (also called human performance technology). It's deceptively simple, because the book has a rigorous intellectual base, and cites key theories, authors and research in the field (not surprising, because Stolovitch and Keeps also co-edited the definitive handbook in the field).
5-0 out of 5 stars Ain't Is!
Stolovitch and Keeps have again (after their wildly popular Telling Ain't Training)demystified all of the processes and procedures for moving your organization from one that is mainly concerned about training to one that is focused on performance.Training is an activity. Performance is an activity coupled with the result of that activity and this book provides all of the methodology for getting valued results for your organization. Its fast paced style and fun to do exercises will make this book the one book on your professional book shelf that just ain't going to gather dust.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
This book gives trainers and managers the broader skills and knowledge they need to provide solutions (beyond training) to improve workforce performance. It is easy to read, practical, and has exercises and case studies to reinforce learning. Everyone on my team is reading - and using - it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I found it to be worthwhile.
I have enjoyed reading this book. What great ideas from other teachers and for the different age groups.I'm going to use these ideas for myself as I strive to write.

5-0 out of 5 stars For all writers everywhere
Ralph Fletcher is my mentor as I teach all aspects of writing to my students. Wonderful mini-lessons and writing strategies are backed up by sound pedagogy and research. A must have book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Model Mini-lessons for the writing workshop
I'm a relatively new teacher, and have switched grade levels every year.Teaching writing has been one of the biggest challenges for me.I believe in a writing workshop model, and use a lot of 6 Traits ideas.I knew that both relied on the idea of the writing "mini-lesson" but I really didn't know what those should look like or what kinds of topics they should cover. This book has been a godsend.I disagree with those who say that this book is too rigid.Yes, each lesson identifies particular literature resources which can be used.If you have that book, that's awesome. If not, just adapt the lesson for use with a different book that illustrates the same concept. The point is, these are concise 15 minute mini-lessons that really help your students recognize writing craft, and give them accessible ideas which they can use to improve their own writing.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Thorough Explanation and Illustration.
Where I work, we are close to the point in which we will be implementing the Response to Intervention model for determining learning disabled and emotionally disturbed student eligibility. This necessitated my pouring over this book a few times in the last few weeks. I have to recommend it strongly as it would be difficult to imagine a more thorough work concerning this very new subject. Its historical discussion of special education and learning disabilities was excellent as was the authors' review of recent laws and legislation. The authors' description of the ineptitude of the discrepancy model is compelling even for those of us who never endured zoo staffings which were often its inevitable result. For those of us in the field, there are endless forms and figures on these pages which can be used as inspiration behind the forms accompanying our district's transition; although, RTI adoption clearly isn't just a matter of forms. The most exciting aspect is that it will give us an opportunity to develop a new aspect to one's game. Now, we'll utilize scientifically based interventions and be able to initiate them while recording the results. The authors even offer a template for a novel psychological report based upon Response to Intervention. Their creativity and thoroughness was a pleasant surprise.

First, I should start by saying I'm a 23-year-old teacher who graduated from Penn State University.I've been teaching now for about 5 months.
5-0 out of 5 stars A concise summary of the available research.
There are a number of popular books on classroom management.Indeed, one could argue that there is a flavor for every type of teacher. However, what I most appreciate about Marzano's books is that they are meta-analyses of educational research. This is where my own bias comes in.Having undergone doctoral study in education leads me to prefer reading the research literature; however, I do not have the time to locate and read such a large body of literature. With Marzano's book much of the legwork has already been completed.I can read his concise summary of the literature. Then, for those areas that I desire a greater depth of knowledge, I have his references to delve deeper into the educational research. For my purposes, this makes Marzano's book a great asset.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book grew on me (slightly)...
This book was an assigned text for a seminary class, which is the only reason that I read it.I have a degree in secondary education, so I spent considerable time during college studying these types of concepts, though the terminology in this book was new to me.I began this book with a chip on my shoulder about the psychobabble that seems to dominate many discussions about pedagogy, and she certainly reinforced several of those irritations. For instance, she spent considerable time describing the futility of lecture.I realize that lecture has significant limitations, but I think it is a silly overgeneralization to disregard its potential entirely.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good for new educators
When you are teaching a class of adults, do you find yourself wondering if the class is getting the information?Do you wonder if you are talking too much? These are questions for all adult educators, and this book is a good first start. It teaches the use of learning tasks rather than lectures.4-0 out of 5 stars an important book for all training professionals
I think this book is a must for all people working in the field of adult education. Jane Vella has a unique way to give new life to old concepts, and to make us rediscover the basic principles to be used when designing and leading trainings. 5-0 out of 5 stars the nuts and bolts to put the thing together
I am working on my dissertation. This book got me out of my thinking chair and to my writing desk. The philosophical approach to qualitative research is very contemporary and will take us into whole new areas of research to improve and 'polish' humanity. My only objection is the cost.Does a book like this really have to cost over $60?Too much.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is just awesome. This opens up a whole universe for the qualitative researcher.
When one thinks of qualitaitve research one tends to think immediately of focus groups and face to face interviews - but increasingly with research the game is shifting toward online surveys that generate wonderful amounts of open-ended content, and research projects may also involve ethnography and content analysis to gain rich insights. In other words the focus of the professional must shift toward that quesiton: "what on earth do we do with all this 'soft' data?" Those verbatims, those observation notes... there's a huge amount of data waiting for interpretation. Can you systematically analyse it?

3-0 out of 5 stars You can learn a lot if you don't fall asleep first.
I am currently enrolled in a floral design program using this book as text.Yes, it is a very imformative book, but Ms. Hunter goes into far to much detail and uses far to many words to get her point across.Maybe it's just me and I am a far more visually oriented person, but trying to learn floral design through the use of a text book so far is not my cup of tea...I think it's a good reference book but that's about it.

I have referred to this textbook throughout the five years since I took my first floral design class.I am now a seasoned designer and sometimes refresh my memory by re-reading chapters.Well-written and illustrated.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fluent Reader - Excellent Resource
Very practical for teachers but at the same time is research-based.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic and so practical!
The book was given to me by my principal and after reading the first chapter I gave it back so I could buy my own. This is a book every elementary teacher should own and refer to on a regular basis. It has enough theory to it to support its findings without slowing down the reading. Most of the book has practical suggestions and methods to use in the classroom.I have been so motivated by this book that I have completely changed the way I am teaching reading in my 4th grade classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars LIFESAVER!
This book was a lifesaver for me, when I was thrown in with a class of middle-school students who had very poor reading skills. I used a number of the techniques described in the book, with good results: paired reading for very low readers (which I also encouraged their parents to do with them); Fluency Development Lesson for the whole class (reading poetry aloud, both whole class and in pairs); and much more. This book promotes oral reading, which I think is imperative in boosting reading skills (in contrast to my college professors, who said "never require students to read out loud"), and also gives a good, concise background on how and why oral reading fell out of favor. This book is easy to read, and gets across a lot of information in as painless a way as possible. Each chapter describes a particular technique, and then has a "(that technique) at a glance" box at the end that summarizes the information. I had looked at all the books on fluency I could find, and selected this as the best, and I recommend it without reservation. I used Jack Prelutsky's "Something Big Has Been Here" book of poetry for the Fluency Development Lesson, and it was awesome. Clever, humorous poetry that appeal to kids, but contain very sophisticated vocabulary, which became the basis of our vocabulary study.

5-0 out of 5 stars from a teacher
This book has helped me tremendously in redesigning my reading program. As a special education teacher I am always looking for new concepts when it comes to my struggling readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, research-based, trustworthy.
Dr. Richard Allington continues to provide a research-based perspective that goes beyond the quick fixes, commercial-for-profit programs, and the political rhetoric of the day.If you really want to understand reading and learn a variety of research-based strategies that can be used to enhance reading, this is the book for you. There are plenty of practical strategies for teachers as well as parents. However, if you are looking for simplistic fixes (more phonics, more tests, more homework), I would advise you to go to your conservative "think" tanks and listen to politicians who have never read a research study.

5-0 out of 5 stars Explains concepts in an easy to understand manner
How beneficial you will find this book depends on your background. If you are a parent, teacher, or college student trying to learn about basic research on reading, then this book is for you. This book gave me a nice review, but if you are familiar with the original research, you may want to skip this as something you already know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth the Purchase
This book is a great place to start for individuals who already have some teaching experience, have a general familiarity with differentiated learning, but need help with the scope and implementation. This is not for someone who wants linear how-to manual. This book begins with a rationale for differentiated learning and then provides a framework for understanding the process, content, and structure for setting up your classroom. There is plenty of practical advice and examples. If you already know that this is the direction you want to take, I highly recommend this purchase.

Gunsalus (full disclosure:I attended because I know her relatives in my area)and found myself looking forward to her upcoming book. Her commonsense approach to awkward situations and challenging personalities is both novel and imminently practical.I am a small business owner.I encounter the business-world counterparts of the characters in Professor Gunsalus's book regularly, and I can tell you that her approaches work equally well in both worlds. I heartily recommend this book.In fact, I am purchasing a copy for each of my staff with the hope that we can bring Professor Gunsalus's positive and ethical systems into practice in our offices and we will be discussing her examples at our next staff retreat. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Assessment Book I've Seen
I bought this for an ESL Assessment class at the graduate level. I also teach ESL at a university, and this book comes in very handy, both in theory and in practice. I especially like the rubrics you give to students so they can assess their own strengths and weaknesses. For example, when working together in groups, students fill out a form after their work is done, stating how well they listened, asked for clarification, or offered/asked for opinions. I continue to use this book long after I've taken the class, and I believe this is the best assessment book out there. Don't waste your time (or money) on books like "ESL Assessment: On the Yellow Big Road to the Withered of Oz" (or whatever the title of that book is!)
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
I have just completed a graduate course in Assessment for teachers of ELLs.Almost all of the students in this class, including me, found this book to be a very valuable resource. Some of the information is redundant, but for a teacher looking for ideas on how to construct an authentic assessment of student work (reading, writing, speaking or listening) it is full of great insights and models that can be copied from the book or revised for individual use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic text for ESL/TESOL course on Assessment
This book is incredibly helpful for ESL / TESL / ESOL / TESOL teachers and home schoolers as well. It was a textbook in a required Assessment course, but it is so helpful and practical that it will be very useful even if you're not taking a formal course. It presents detailed advice and examples for portfolio assessment, as well as the largest assortment of rubrics that I have seen anywhere. When you use Authentic Assessment to balance your Standardized Tests, you get a more balanced picture of the student's strengths and weaknesses, so you can tailor your instruction to the need. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointed
The paper has a wax like feel.It is slippery for colored pencil. There is not enough tooth in the paper to hold the colored pencil. No fun. :(

5-0 out of 5 stars Great filler and study guide
I needed a good 'filler' and study guide for my Anatomy classes and this seems to fill the need beautifully. Not used it yet but will come back after the year starts in Sept. and give an update.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Changes
If George W. Bush could read - this is a book he should be made to read. As old as it may be - nothing has truly changed...so many children being 'left behind'. A devastating book. While we piss away billions abroad, TRUE Home Security (health education and proper employment) is ignored.

5-0 out of 5 stars The people who rule our country should read this book
The poeple who govern are schools should tread this book. As a white student in a basicl ricth white Shool district, I picked this up this summer for my AP English reading asignment.
