5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible History of Art Deco
Great book with many helpful photos. Great history of the art. Recommended to anyone who wants to know more about one of the 20th century's most important art forms.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not impressed
This is a pretty dry book.First it helps to know a little French.Secondly, all this book does is throw in a couple hundred names of designers and places. Third, when the author speak of different designs which were created by people there are no images to back it up, so you really can't produce an image in your head of what the author is describing, the images that are in the book are mainly black and white and drawings which really didn't give me a sense of what the designer was trying to portray. As a designer I purchased this book to learn more about the art deco style, characteristics, elements, materials and influence, which is not what I found in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The last book I'd let go of.
For those who are looking for a special purpose book, such as one that will instruct a person in design, or categorize items one may want to purchase by type (lamps, vases, statues, etc.), this may not be the ideal book. For the reader who is interested in exploring the deco spirit of original times and designers who viewed deco interiors as ensembles and not mere collections of items, this is an excellent book.As well bound as it is, I may eventually wear out my copy.It has been most useful to see original period interiors (ensembles, including the objects of which they are composed) from hotel lobbies, theatres, bedrooms, living rooms, bathrooms, restaurants, train stations, ocean liners, movie sets, offices, kitchens, and more, as I gather interpretive hints and inspiration for remodeling projects for each of the rooms in my house.I also browse through it sometimes just for the type of eye candy I never tire of.Photography is plentiful, and many photographs are nearly full-page in size. The writing is instructive related to history and designers, and well written. If I could keep only one art deco book - so far - this would be it. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Can't find its niche
Wendy Hitchmough's "The Arts & Crafts Lifestyle and Design" is a frustrating, yet beautiful-looking book that covers the Arts & Crafts movement by focusing on how it was influenced by changes in popular culture, the advent of scientific "modernity", and anti-Victorian backlash.4-0 out of 5 stars Discussion of the Arts and Crafts Lifestyle
The Arts and Crafts Lifestyle and Design is a historical perspective on the design principles and the lifestyle (i.e. how the houses were used) by people involved in this design movement. It is very well written with wonderful photographs. It is, however, organized in a manner as to make using this book for research on the artists or the designs difficult.Rather than highlighting individual artists of the movement and their work, it is arranged by the basic rooms of the houses. For example, dining rooms are discussed using various designers and houses.I would have found it more useful had the individual houses or each artist been discussed more and in the same location in the book. The book does bring to light the changes in the structure of Victorian society and houses with that of the Arts and Crafts Movement. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Phogography
Spectacular photographs serve to illustrate a view of Japan that is far different from the bustling cities. This represents three things to me:
2-0 out of 5 stars My vacation photos turned out better
Sigh, disappointed: poorly composed, lousy photos inside the covers make this book visually un-stunning.Houses and vignettes looked dull, close, shabby, untidy, underexposed, overshadowed, and only very rarely triggered a moment of interest.I felt that I've seen better Japanese country design books and magazine layouts, and I was truly disappointed.Feh.

5-0 out of 5 stars epitome of English eccentricity, cosiness, and charm
This truly delightful book shows cottage interiors that reflect the pasttimes, habits, and way of living that one likes to believe are essentially "English".These homes look as if they are actually lived in and all exhibit that special British propensity for comfort blended with eccentricity. The ubiquitous Aga is featured in a number of the kitchens, but there are also enough 'jolts' in the form of colour use and collections to make this book memorable and somehow fresh. A book I refer to again and again and well worth adding to your collection - almost a reference on English cottage style.Very good value. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A JOY TO OWN!
Of all of my interior design and style books this is one of my VERY favorites... I sink into my favorite chair with this book again and again.I just love it!Wether you prefer old world style or sleek modern this book has it all (but far from ordinary!)... lots of inspiration with LOTS of gorgeous photos. A treat for your eyes whatever your taste!

5-0 out of 5 stars brilliant
I own this book, Morroccan Interiors, Provance Interiors and Seaside Interiors.I will eventually own the whole lot of them.Why-- the books are a marvelous look into the interiors of people who are most rarely interior designers. They are artists, old people, young people, even gypsy caravans are given their due.I have gleaned better decorating ideas from these books than any "decorating" magazine or book. There was a story about letting the person who just moved from your apartment help you place your furniture as you move it- they know what fits where from their expericance. This and these books are great for "just making sense" in a vairety of gorgeous settings documented in gorgeous full color photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Decorating Inspiration
If you are looking for a picture book of Parisian interiors to inspire your decorating, this will work very well.I am constantly searching for books like this--which are full of illustations of those interior details which seem to be uniquely Parisian.Every page is illustrated with photographs and includes just enough commentary to keep it interesting without getting descriptively heavy. This is definitely a pictoral reference/beautiful parlour table book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Artistic Log Homes
Inside Log Homes takes log homes to new levels. While log homes are the feature, artistic expression is the focus. Each home is carefully accessorized in order to maximize the beauty of the living space. This is Cindy Thiede's fifth book and she presents quite a few beautiful ideas like the cabin wrapped in soft green summertime trees with transparent walls and massive pine posts that reach from the floor to the ceiling. It is like living in comfort outdoors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fireside Reading
While cabins can be a year-round fascination, I have a fondness for log cabins in the winter. There is a secret place I like to visit when I want to escape for a weekend and watch movies in a very cozy setting. To own a cabin of my own would seem a dream, but for now it is a "rare" weekend reality.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful browsing
Mary Whitesides draws upon her years of experience and expertise as an interior designer to showcase high-tech, cowboy, rustic country, and regional provincial oriented designs for mountain homes, that are truly spectacular -- and enhanced for the reader with spectacular full-color photography. Of special interest is a remarkable chapter devoted to the creation of truly gorgeous gardens suitable for cool climates and rock soils. There is also a complete resource guide of artisans, manufacturers, and designers which will prove invaluable for anyone seeking to create, modify, or re-design their own mountain home. Mountain Style is simply wonderful browsing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this book!
This book has inspired me like no other decorating book has. I got the book at the library first and after renewing it the maximum amount of times, figured I'd better buy it before I wore out the borrowed copy. I am filled with ideas and can't wait to try them out.Susan Sargent has a real gift for using color in the home, and her ideas are truly inspirational.

1-0 out of 5 stars New Country Home- Waste of your $
I was excited about getting this book but what a disappointment!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Loads of Color
This book is so beautiful. From the front cover to the last page, it is a sweeping expanse of color. Even if I didn't need ideas to decorate the house we're moving into soon, I would still love to sit and look at the book. The writing is simple and interesting, she talks about her journey to where she is now; her inspiration; history; being afraid of color; etc. The pictures are beautiful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Inspiring!
I live in suburbia, in a newer development where all the homes pretty much look the same.I am always on the look-out for creative ideas on decorating because I don't want my interior to look like it stepped out of one of the well-known home decor stores and catalogs. This book was an inspiring find!Lots of pictures and informative text...I have looked at the pictures over and over again.I'm not much into the step-by-step instruction books on transforming found objects so this book was right up my alley. For me, its purpose was served in that it filled my head and notebook with creative ideas for my home.A great book to look through before you head off to the nearest architectural salvage yard, flea market, or out for a day of garage sales.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quinessential interior inspiration!
My mom sent this to me at college- what a wonderful and inspiring gift for anyone who enjoys antiques, flea markets, design, and the like!Chalmers brilliantly presents the different categories of flea market finds and ways of tying them together to create masterful spaces (check out the table of contents to see what I mean).Treloar's photographs are inspiring; even without reading the text, your mind will absorb countless revitilized uses of 'junk', and begin to piece together unique ideas of its own.A very stimulating find!

5-0 out of 5 stars Student Furniture -- Grown Up.
Most of us moved into our first unfurnished apartment with a collection of junk furniture that we picked up from our parents, from garage sales, flea markets and who knows where. Later we upgraded a little at a time, buying new things that we thought would better fit the image we were trying to create.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring!
Elegantly arranged and edited architecture/design book with focus on seaside homes.Very good coverage of each featured home; excellent organization on the page, with text in English, French, German.5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding dreambook
While I purchased this book on vacation in the charming town of Seaside, Florida, I had the good fortune of actually staying nearby in one of the featured homes--Matarangi. The photos in the book don't begin to do justice to the views and architecture, though in superior coffee table book manner, they do try. The book allows one to travel to far off homes and enter their beauty, while never leaving your own home. However, if the opportunity ever arises to enjoy one of these splendidly represented homes, I heartily recommend it. If not, select this book and start enjoyable seaside travel dreaming via your armchair or backyard chaise today.
