4-0 out of 5 stars A very strong four and a half stars!
I am a librarian and a woodworker and thus have access and interest in many books on this subject."In the Arts and Crafts Style" is a beautiful book that is deserved of much praise. The color photography is as plentiful as it is beautiful.I appreciate that the subject matter for this book does not seem to be drawn from the same dozen houses that so many others have used (As much as I like them, how many times can we look at the same pictures of the Gamble House, or Frank Lloyd Wright's home and studio?).The text in this book is very well written and conveys clearly what is so special about the subject matter.I was also very impressed with the excellent resource list given at the end of the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Dreaming Your Ultimate Spaces
What a lovely book, for the A&C afficionado and the newbie alike. Dividing her content into Influences & Innovations; Hallmarks of the Style; Furniture; Objects and Accents; and Case Studies, Mayer presents a stunning and inspirational tour of homes and objects from the Arts and Crafts Movement. My sister gave me this when she realized I loved the style, and I nearly wept. How amazing to have someone understand your passions!

5-0 out of 5 stars a MUST in ANY LIBRARY!
A book of grace and perfect taste. A good book to come back to when you need another idea... end tables, curtains, carpets, furniture placement...... lovely ideas...ideas that can work in a small apartment, modest colonial or grand house..... it's the 1 book in my collection of 50 or more interior design books that I would NOT sell...it is my favorite....

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond CLASSIC
A must have reference for any professional or amature decorator. But be warned, if this is your first book by Lady Henrietta you will be hooked and will soon order her entire body of work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic English Interiors
If you love English country house style, this book epitomizes"classic."Whether the schemes are soft and pastel or bright andbold, the classic fabrics, patterns, and antiques pull it all together. There are plenty of gorgeously formal stately home rooms, but the author isan interior designer who also designs for more modest homes, and they allhave inspiring ideas that can be translated to an average person's designschemes in terms of how to use color and pattern.Beautiful, crispphotography showcases the rooms to perfection. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars AFavorite
I find myself reaching for this book over and over again. In it the authors generously give us a glimpse of the life they have made on a small island in the Bahamas. With a lot of hard work and no pretension, they have gotten it mostly just right. Their houses are neither overdone nor underdone, but pleasing to the eye, soothing and liveable. Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice to look at....PERIOD
The cover was very appealing.First impressions etc;.The inside photos even more so.The writing however sounded likethe ramblings of a spoiled child living in an unreachable reality sometimes and at other times, the snobbery of an aristocracy only appreciated in the mind of the writer and those who really believe that paradise can only be created by the writer. 5-0 out of 5 stars There's no place like Bali...
Many westerners have set up homes inBali, which have long been a magnet for western culture-hound. Here, writer and photographer showcase what the island's most inspiring examples of contemporary residences, shops, restaurants and of course the beautiful resorts that Bali is renowned. Thework is well researched, featuring architectural and interior detailing ofcross cultural legacy and an amalgamation of both modern and traditional. The text includes little stories of origins and legends. And as always,Lucca Invernizzi Tettoni's superb photography, mostly outdoor shots of thecreme de la creme of Bali's private and resort landscaped gardens. Thiswork captured all parts of the Balinese tropical living experience, provingwhy Bali is often remembered as the place to rejuvenate the soul.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bali,Modern The Art of Tropical Living
This is just what the doctor ordered for enthusiasts of tropical decor and culture.By focusing on the use of modern (alibet, longer lasting) building materials with techniques designed to provide a tropical ambiance is neat. It's not something that I have found elsewhere. It would also benice to provide some interior decorating schemes to be translated into theAmerican shopping market using or importing accessories from the Baliregion or using alternative sources for the "tropical" look fromother areas, i. e., the British West Indies, the Caribbean, major U.S.catalogues, etc.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally!! A book for us "outside the box" decorators
I will preface this review by saying: If you want a "how to" decorating book, with step by step instructions and perfectly laid out rooms that you can easily duplicate by buying each piece in the book, this book is not for you. If you, like me, are looking for decorating books that are a little outside the box... a book that gives you new, fresh ideas with inspirations stemming from items you aesthetically love (the pearly pink of the inside of a conch shell found on vacation, the smooth sophisticated grey from a river stone) and build a room around it... you have found the book you have been searching for! Editorial Review

With Gustav Stickley and Frank Lloyd Wright, Charles Sumner Greene and brother Henry Mather Greene defined the Arts & Crafts movement in America. From their offices in Pasadena, they created "Ultimate Bungalows," finely crafted homes characterized by the integration of architecture and interior design into a harmonious whole. Though both brothers had long and distinguished careers, the highpoint of their work came between 1903 and 1909, when they created such lasting masterpieces as The Gamble House in Pasadena, the Pratt House in Ojai, and the Thorsen House in Berkeley. Superb photoraphic illustration depicts the design genius of the Greenebrothers. A comprehensive study of leading architects of the Arts & Crafts movement...a high compliment to the monumental craftsmanship of those who executed their designs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great approach, with a bit of everything
This book pulls together a variety of spiritual concepts - feng shui, goddesses, purification/smudging, creating altars, use of stones and crystals, aromatherapy/scents in the home, and colors. It's really a great overview.Activities like spring cleaning and decluttering are covered as are specific rooms like bedrooms, kitchen, etc. There are some terrific photographs throughout the book which really inspire.I like that the author put all of this together into one book.I have other books that talk around all this - one on feng shui, one on crystals, one on potpourri, etc. This book ties them together and I feel like now I can go back to those other books and apply them better.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best "sacred space" books I've read
This book was a real "find" for me.I have several books on feng shui and space clearing, and this one was intuitive, yet practical at the same time.It is spiritual but loaded with remedies for clearing one's space on this earth while we are here!I never thought to talk to my house, yet it makes perfect sense! It reads almost like a novel and is just full of information.I wish I could go home from work now and continue with the "read"!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview of different spiritual aspects of home
When I first looked over this book I did not get into it.But as I began to buy new furniture for a new home and pulled together my tastes and sytles (The Domain Book is great for that!), I found this book to be awonderfully insightful book that helped me to consider Feng Shui andblessing my home and many other spiritual and tangible aspects of thisplace called my home. I have ordered a second one today for a friend. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Someone Needs to do a good book on Silver Lake
The L.A. neighborhood called Silver Lake is home to a large number of iconic Modern-era houses, with many created by the West Coast's masters of the period. In recent decades, as "mid-century modern" has found new admiration, a new generation of architects has been called on to add to the already rich Silver Lake Modern storyline. Thus, today, perhaps more than any other neighborhood in the U.S., Silver Lake---a neighborhood with distinct, widely acknowledged geographic boundaries---is a mecca for Modern. What's more, there's actually enough extant iconic Modern houses in Silver Lake to merit a book-length treatment. After all, many of these daring examples of design have fascinating stories.
3-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable overview of America's most interesting neighborhood
Beautifully illustrated and informative exploration of the design and architecture of America's most unique and unheralded artist community. The author seems a bit eager to anoint herself the leader of the BOMO movement, taking great pains to establish her legacy as its central figure. At times this leaves the book feeling like an overpriced brochure for the Barbara Bestor Studio, however, there is enough content to make it a worthwhile read, particularly for those familiar with the area.

4-0 out of 5 stars Romantic rooms
Sometimes astonishing, freqeuently amusing, this book is a peek behind the often closed doors of a variety of Irish homes. From the "Militant Grandeur" of great houses such as Castletown to the quirky cottage of two bachelor brothers with a passion for birds ("The Birdmen of Belmullet") the pictures tell of an approach to decorating that is different from that prevailing in neighboring England. There is a whimsy and romanticism in Irish decorating style, both high and low, that is distinctive. As a frequent visitor to the Emerald Isle, I've been in some of the featured locations (Castletown, Bantry House) and can testify that the other featured locations are not unique.I found the interiors of some of the recently restored buildings to be very inspiring as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Design Research Source
As the resident scenic designer for a professional theatre company, I am constantly searching for detailed, unique visual reference material to incorporate into my stage settings. Since we had the rare opportunity to produce the American premiere of "Kevin's Bed" from the Abbey Theatre last season (and will also be doing the American premiere of "Stella By Starlight" from the Abbey this season), I needed accurate information oncontemporary Irish home interiors; not easy to find on this side of the Atlantic! This book has an interesting architectural mix from restored 18th century mansions to rural cottages with richly detailed large color photographs packed with just the kind of information that I was looking for. I would recommend this as a reference book for interior designers, Irish enthusiasts or anyone needing this kind of unique visual material.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vivid and immensely-colorful
"The Irish Home" is a vivid and immensely-colorful volume. Ianthe Ruthven takes us from grand and ostentatious eighteenth century estates to contemporary Ireland's restoration homes (an exquisite exampleof the latter is Fedany, a former 1870s schoolhouse in Cork, that has beenturned into a bright and resplendent abode). There are 200 large andbeautifully-lit color pictures. (Ruthven, in addition to being a finewriter, is an accomplished photographer). Some of her best compositionshere include the Leixlip Castle series; Phillipa Bayliss's bedroom andbookcase in the Old School; and the two-page spread of Gola Island, asecluded and now largely-deserted isle off the coast of Donegal. Ruthven, both in her prose and her photographs, readily captures what Irish novelistMolly Keane once noted about Irish country houses: That they "areethereal in their uselessness, and extraordinary in the spaces theirdesigners yielded to one object only--beauty." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A New Genre?
In her Bungalow books Jane Powell has come close to inventing a new genre: the architectural book that is actually fun to read. The latest (Bungalow Details:Interior)is no exception. The illustrations by Linda Svendsen are stellar, as always, but sometimes I think they distract from the best part: Ms. Powell's writing. Jane Powell manages to combine extraordinary erudition with a real sense of fun, two things that virtually never go together. Her knowledge is encyclopedic, her humor unending, her love of puns totally scandalous. She is also wise, with a real sense of what should and should not be done with old houses and the resources they represent. The writings in her Bungalow (and Linoleum) books deserve to be excerpted and presented in a smaller, less expensive edition: the Sayings of Chairman Jane, if you will, devoid of distracting pictures. I highly recommend this and all of her books. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Radiant color is not merely joyously prevalent in Mexico, it is part of the national psyche. According to this energetic celebration of Mexican style, "the color that floods Mexico's streets and plazas, markets and homes (and the pages of this book) is language and metaphor--a form of communication, deeply bound to experience. Day and night, birth and death, rich and poor, feast and famine: color is always there. Earth, sky, and history conspire to make it so." The profusion of multihued walls, tiles, ceramics, textiles, and folk art that fill the home; the riotous juxtapositions ofvivid foods, flowers, supplies, and accessories that comprise the spectacle of the marketplace; the vibrant details that define everything from facades to clothing to handpainted toys--the Mexican obsession with color is everywhere, as is strikingly documented in this lively book.
