I`m a CAD instructor for a large Community College in the Southeast. September 2005 was the first time that I used SolidWorks. SolidWorks is a great 3D CAD tool. My experience is primarily with AutoCAD, 5 plus years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really helps
Unlike a lot of other books about design and interior spaces, this one doesn't give you photos and examples of what you can do with the space... it really helps you evaluate what it is you feel/have with your living space and steps to take to make it into the space you feel better living in. It's as insightful into your self as it is where you live.

5-0 out of 5 stars User friendly and inspiring.I loved it!
Its hard to find books that are accessible and inspire you to find your own aesthetic (rather than imitate the authors). In many ways this is a very gentle and non-judgemental book - its not flashy, hasn't got photos, but it gets the job done.My apartment is coming together beautifully.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Recipe
As a reviewer previously noted, there really isn't anything new here. But like a chef who takes ingredients we are well familiar with and combines them to give us a new experience, so too does Maxwell. There are the little gimmicks--calling people warm and cool, talking about the house like a body when he could just say he's writing about attending to repairs (bones), arranging and organizing the stuff in your space (breath), figuring out the functions of each room (head) and decorating (heart). But this is not a meal of last night's leftovers. Instead it is packaged into another gimmick: the eight week cure. There's a lot to do in your eight weeks: and the work seems unbalanced. It starts out slowly (throwing out one thing, making lists) and ends slowly (preparing for a party) but in the middle there's almost an impossible amount of things to do. But it's all laid out. There are worksheets and practical tips to begin. Maxwell has taken all the steps to transforming a living space and laid them all out sequentially. This book is about more than just fixing up your place however: Maxwell aims to change and enrich your experience of your home. And that's the spice that makes the book worth consuming.

4-0 out of 5 stars Data at your fingertips
This has always been a staple reference book for architects since my student days. I haven't bought a copy for many years, so I was pleased to see that it has been revised and updated to include plenty of relevant new data. Unlike a US-published competitor this book is in metric, and is more expansive in its coverage of building types. A really useful reference tool for all building space planners, architects and interior designers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be on any architect's must-have list!
With all the countless references and easy-to-read diagrams illustrating key dimensions for almost any type or category of use, this book is an architect's Bible. It's not only a useful reference, but this one is a joy to read at one's own leisurely time! Must buy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful book for preliminary design phases
It was in our varsity library where I opened "Neufert" for the first time back in late 70s (they had a two-volume Russian version). Amazingly, then as I studied Architecture I was rather impressed by a broad selection of examples of Western Architecture than by reference data themselves. Now I am more interested in the latter... And the newly edition I have surely provides that! You may blame it for slightly outdated materials or general incompleteness. But, remember, those features are generic for sources like this. Instead the book is useful specifically at preliminary design phases when an architect needs the most general guidelines. You can quickly navigate in a fat volume and can get desired information easily and in full. The only drawback, I think, is that the book is rather based on a continental (mostly German) and British content which can be somewhat inconvenient for, say, an American reader. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars How to teach engineering to a pie-in-the-sky type
The great joy in Jacobs's book is that it's rabidly empirical, which makes it empowering. Naïve change-the-world types like me tend to get stuck on the size of the world they want to change. For instance: thinking about the problems Jacobs is addressing, I'm likely to go like so: "We need to reduce the number of cars in cities. So let's tax people who drive into cities, like London does, and boost mass-transit spending. But that would cost a lot, and we don't have the political strength for that. Man, city problems are hard."
5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless and Brilliant
I first heard of this book referenced in Steven Johnson's "Emergence".I asked a friend if he'd heard of it, and the next thing I knew, I was being sent home with his copy with an assignment !

I found this book to be great for when you have designer's block. This book is filled to the rim with illustrated examples and makes a great quick reference. The best thing about it is it doesn't cost an arm and a leg like most design books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to learn how to integrate design elements

1-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating and very poorly edited
Did anyone actually do the problems given in the book?If they did they would have discovered that key strokes are missing and some dimensions are wrong.Awful, don't bother.

3-0 out of 5 stars Editing?
The material is worthwhile, but the editors have let down the authors on this text. I found too many errors to be excused. Errors focused on spelling and missing keystroke information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent content, Repetitious Photographs
As a non-designer, this is an excellent design book in that it explains how we can make changes to our homes (or use this as a tool during initial home design prior to construction) to make the home more cohesive, more welcoming, more comfy. The concepts are well described; the biggest weakness of the book is its photography. The small photographs did not bother me per se, but the repetition of photographs really took away from the book. The same photographs are used multiple times to highlight different aspects in different chapters. The homes are primarily architecturally gorgeous, and they are wonderful to look at, but I would like to see these concepts described with less elaborate homes and a wider variety of homes. Most of these have a lot of wood, beautiful views, and lots of investment in design features.Using the same photograph more than once is unnecessary, it would be more helpful to show another home to explore the concept. That said, the content is sufficient to recommend this book to others.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great support for dreams
As usual, Susanka's books are worthwhile and support in depth looking at pictures and thought. It arrived promptly - 3 weeks faster than another book ordered on the same day.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Aussie's Perspective
I really love Sarah Susanka's design philosophy. It just makes sense. Here in Australia, there are so many fringe suburbs which are filled to the hilt with McMansions. These houses are built to within centimetres of their boundaries and are generic and worse, shockingly ugly and devoid of character. I loved this book which illustrates the way seemingly small details and good quality workmanship can make such a difference to the feel of a house. If more people embraced these ideals, our cities would improve drastically - more green space has to be a good thing, doesn't it? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Dramatic, and Still Fairly Small Houses
To word it simply, the houses designed by the Hariri sisters are the most dramatic small buildings I have ever seen. Here you will not find gigantic homes built to use size to impress. The Spartan House, built in the Hague, Netherlands was required to have a house footprint no bigger than 26 by 33 feet. Yet even in that small a space their house standa out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Where R U Karrie?
I maybe a fool for architectural discourse but The Perfect $100,000 House is as redolent of architectural joy as the Witold Rybczynski book of the eponymous title The Perfect House: Travels with the Master: Anrdea Palladio.Karrie Jacobs just put a price on it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting Book!
Karrie Jacob's book, The Perfect $100,000 House, tackles a problem I've been wondering about for a long time--why is the majority of housing in America today extraordinarily expensive crap?Do people in this country just have no taste, or is it that they have no choice? Is good design only for those who can afford a custom single family residence of 500K and up?
4-0 out of 5 stars Why the pre-fab movement has gained so many followers
A diary of one woman's search for what seems so reasonable on paper--a modern home on a budget--the strength of this book is its many entertaining interviews with people who are both part of the mainstream homebuilding industry and those that are trying to offer an alternative. If you've heard about pre-fab, this is a good way to learn why it's exciting--but why it only addresses part of the problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tool for life time
Encountered this book 25 years ago when I was in architectural school, it remains as one of the most used reference in our company library.Don't miss it, especially for beginning students.

3-0 out of 5 stars not for beginners
I am just starting out in this field and have no background in drawing or drafting. This book is too technical and does not use an easy step by step approach that would be helpful for beginners like me.This is the book we are using in my first Interior Design graphics class, and I don't think it is appropriate for beginners.

This is a must for anyone studying Architecture or any one trying to express in an architectural form.Ching goes through everything, thoroughly enough where you can figure the rest of the stuff that's not covered on your own.He changes your thought process to show you how to think about it, not just how to do it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Whoa!
I'm amazed that people didn't like this book more... I am also a Land Arch student who had it as an assigned book that was rarely actually assigned.I was thumbing through it in hopes of generating ideas for another class and was amazed at the amount of usable information it contained.Perhaps it is better digested in chunks instead of the whole.I found it great as a reference book.

3-0 out of 5 stars An okay book- required textbook
Being a new student of a landscape architecture program, this was a required textbook for one of my classes. After reading between the lines and through the wordiness of the book, I finally understood the point the author was making and found the point interesting. It took a couple of times to finally understand what he was saying, but it was interesting once I understood it.It was on the dry side.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dull disengaged preaching
The book is much weaker than Lynch's classical piece "The Image of the City". Text sometimes gets dull and too dry, like in many of reference books. In fact, the "referential" quality of "SitePlanning" is the only positive feature of the book. When authorspursue the singular goal to create a comprehensive textbook, the livenessof arguments suffers a lot. The book becomes rather a dull close-mindeddisengaged preaching that requires a lot of effort on the side of a readerto understand and utilize it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Borrowed spiritual wisdom
Alexander's Pattern Language series was/is a great accomplishment. It made the mysteries of good architectural design accessible to everyone. It attempted to liberate home- and town-building from the arrogant priesthood of professional architects and exposed the bankrupt values behind so much of contemporary building. It offered a deeply human alternative much more in tune with the way we really live.
5-0 out of 5 stars wisdom through patience
I'm not an architect, though I do paint a bit and presume to teach. A friend from Ohio undertook one of Alexander's architectural courses, 20 years ago, and posted me notes on Alexander's colour theory. I've used them ever since. But the articulation of this guru's understanding of the experience world & how we process it & make art in and for it, has become keener, more subtle & concise over the years. This is a very, very profound teaching without any messianic overdrive. Indeed, its the patience and humility of Alexander's process of discovering essential rules & roles for making art, that are most profound and the enduring feature of his presentation. And the book's own look exemplifies his quest for the beautiful.I'm not so taken with the reproductions of his own painting, however. I can't quibble with the twentieth century masters he reproduces as evidence for enduring beauty. A fabulous book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful book of New York History and Architecture
An exquisite book! There are stories about each apartment house and how it came to be. I found the two architects, Candela and Carpenter, to be very interesting characters. The homes they designed are ahead of their time. The floor plans are fascinating. The book also shows, by the floor plans, how people lived and what their needs were. The authors even quote costs of building and tell of the people who lived there. If you like real estate you will find this fascinating.

4-0 out of 5 stars Grand New York
Let me first say that I loved the period black and white photos of the buildings, I also appreciated the fact that all of the buildings mentioned came with requisite photos, that is a must in book of this sort.I really didn't know that much about these buildings nor the architects so this book gave me a real education, I came away more knowledged and very impressed. The attention to detail the architects employed in these buildings is amazing and the fact that so many are still extant is a tribute to the artistry and talent that went into designing and building them and obviously contempory wealthy apartment seekers appreciate these attributes or else we all know these buildings would have been pulled down long ago, just like so many of the Gilded Age mansions they replaced. This publishing house puts out such finely crafted books and this one does not disappoint, I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Andrew Alpern's Labor of Love
Candela and Carpenter were two of New York's most noted architects of the inter-war era, specializing in luxury apartment buildings. Architectural historian Andrew Alpern has assembled a reference text of their buildings, organized in geographic sequence. In this book, a typical building has two pages dedicated to it. One page consists of a floor plan, and the facing page has a photo or rendering of the exterior, combined with a one-to-six sentence description. Also, there are several brief essays at the beginning of the book.Read more

Another beautiful Alan Hess architectural history that deserves to become the standard work. The book is in two parts, in the first sixty-eight pages he writes a readable and interesting history of this very popular housing concept and being popular it was looked down on by the architectural elite and many critics. The second part (147 pages) is a pictorial study of twenty-six ranch houses photographed by Noah Sheldon.

2-0 out of 5 stars Rat's Tail at his best!
I LOVED this book!I think my designs are so much better now that I know when to open and close the windows at the right time!I was always so confused before.I can also make sure that I get good air flow by drawing those great ribbon arrows. This book is perfect for anyone who has never looked at the sky or felt the wind before or chooses to ignore their own senses!I think Brown could of done this without DeKay though.RULES-O-THUMB LUV!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sun, Wind and Light, Architectural Design Strategies
This is one of the most important books of the decade.Anyone who builds or designs buildings, needs to own and read this book. I am amazed at the thoroughness of information it presents about design, all there, in one book, it is worth five times what they ask.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed handbook for architects
This book is on architecture and energy conservation. From the cover - This book is for designers who want to consider the form-generation potential of sun, wind, and light in the earliest stages of the design process. The book stresses the energy implications of using the sun, wind, and light. However, it is organized by the architectural elements designers manipulate - streets, open spaces and buildings, rooms and courtyards, and walls, roofs, floors, and windows. The book is divided into three sections : Design Strategies, Analysis Techniques, and Strategies for Supplementing Passive Systems. Extensively referenced and indexed. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good step by steps
This is a great book combined with a Intro/Begginer CAD class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for all levels...
I have been using AutoCAD in school for a couple of years but never learned how to fully use it, or use it correctly. This book makes it easy to learn from scratch, or just focus on what you need. It is extremely easy to use and follow. You could realistically learn the whole book in two solid days of reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
It is an outstanding book for aspiring architects who want to gain more knowledge about the history of what they study and practice. From the Egyptians to the modern architects like Frank Gehry, this book explains how, why, and where the great structures of the world were built. It is an excellent research material to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I have always admired architecture. I love wandering through cities, marvelling at their skyscrapers, and travelling to Europe to see older buildings. I bought "A World History of Architecture" so that I could better understand not only the beauty of these buildings, but their place in architectural history. "A World History" exceeded my expectations.
