3-0 out of 5 stars Friedman's history is great, but "Flat" has its drawbacks
Friedman's substantial, "The World Is Flat" is a summary of the dramatic changes in the economy of the world in the first few years of the 21st century. The book is full of great stories from all over the world that shows how, while the geography of our planet hasn't changed, that geography is becoming less and less an obstacle for business. The author shows, in a fairly amusing way, how certain dates in history (e.g. 11/9/89 - When the Walls Came Down and the Windows Went Up) represent major milestones in the progress to a flat world. These events, called flatteners, helped usher in the new globalization (version 3.0), which is exploding and resulting in a new world economy where India and China are on the same production and creative level as the United States.
4-0 out of 5 stars The future is here, and it is starting to be evenly distributed
I have to admit I only read this book based on the fact it was topping all the best seller lists. I found it to be a worth while read. Even though I follow technology closely, I wasn't really aware of some of the points that the author made, so hopefully many will pick up something from this book. Many parts of the book I had difficulties relating to, but the new insights it provided were defently worth it.

1-0 out of 5 stars How to destroy the United States 101 - What the book should be titled
It's a shame that US leaders have based a lot of its US policies on this book. It's like they want to make the US North Mexico or some Third World country. Really it's traitorous.

Well, I wrote about 10 reviews on trading books so far, so that should clear off some doubts of the previous reviewer.
1-0 out of 5 stars You've got to wonder
Every reviewer rates this an exceptional book and every reviewer has only rated one book, this one. Isn't that strange (rhetorical question). I read a great many reviews of trading books; go to a book by Elder or one of the other market gurus and you'll find reviewers who have read and reviewed scads of trading books. There's of course no way for me to know, but maybe the author's real talent is writing trading book reviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best traders manual
I bought this book due to the excellent reviews and I agree with all the 5 stars that everyone has given it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Yawn...
While it does contain a few interesting bits here and there (mainly in the first half of the book) this book fails to live up to the buzz surrounding it. There were few actual "insider" details (or details of any kind, in fact) and the author's voice grated on my nerves -- very self-serving. I suppose those interested in U.S. foreign and overseas development policy during the Cold War and post-Cold War era will find it worth reading, but getting through it is something of a chore. It took all my will power to plow through the last quarter of the book...

2-0 out of 5 stars Sadly not the book it's been touted to be
The premise for "Confessions Of An Economic Hitman (COHM)" couldn't be more intriguing and the book did after all sell tons of copies and has remained on most booksellers' recommended reading list for ages. So my expectations were high for John Perkins' blow out confessional, the product of a conscience that struggled with but manfully prevailed against the temptations of a financially lucrative and high flying career as an "economic hit man".
5-0 out of 5 stars enlightening insight into US foreign economic policy
I am so glad I read this book. While it has been critized for relying largely on the testimony of the author, John Perkins' book fits squarely into a lineage of books that are beginning to reveal the United States' plans for "global empire." Like Chomsky, Perkins reveals the actions behind the double-speak and PR-sanitized language that occludes the economic domination that is really going on in the form of "aid," "development," etc.

A new approach which in fact is so easy but psychologically so difficult to accept. We have tried it out and and observed companies doing it since 16 years: to design and market low end products for the "Bottom of the Pyramid" (BOP) with high profit margins at low cost. We have developed a tool which we call MMP or Multiple Market Positioning which shows step by step how to implement this BOP idea successfully. 5-0 out of 5 stars A must for all traders!
Not knowing much about trading I bought the book. It equiped me with the basics like trading times all over the world, brief history of Foreign Exchange and so musch more. After studing the book, I was confident and ready to trade. There are many online clsses on FX trading, but the amazing thing about this book is how one can relate to it. No matter what your idea or statergy you follow, the answers are in this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good when taken into context
I have had the pleasure of seeing Kathy Lien speak twice at Forex seminars. She is very intelligent and has a wonderful personality. You will find some interesting and informative content in this book that can be useful in your educational path in Forex. But it is important to keep in mind that the book is written not by a trading entrepreneur but by a representative of one of the largest Forex brokers. To become a successful trader it is essential to recognize the vast difference in agenda between winning traders and brokers. The entire industry is driven by brokers and almost all material available on learning to trade is tied directly or indirectly to the broker industry whose agenda is to teach trading strategies that make the most money for THEM. Because the industry is unregulated, brokers are able to get away with many less than ethical practices. For instance, it is ironic that another reader mentions how Kathy covers the subject of the "carry trade" in detail. The last time I spoke with FXCM I discovered to my shock that they had adopted the policy of charging a negative interest regardless of which direction one was trading which I believe should be criminal. But there is no regulating agency to prevent them from doing that. Neither the CFTC nor the NFA actually regulate the activity of Forex brokers. Some other brokers, refuse to publish their interest rates or display them in their trading platforms so they can change them behind the scenes every day according to what benefits them the most. You may notice that others have a negative interest that is twice as much as their positive interest. All of this is part of the overall objective to keep the majority of traders focused on day trading which makes the most money for brokers. Studying trading material published by brokers is like asking a casino owner how to gamble. Most of the trading "mentors" are also introducing brokers who make money when you trade. A word to the wise, is that if you intend to succeed in Forex trading consider looking to sources of information that are not tied to any broker such as other traders who have learned to master this arcane art.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Guide to Making Money in Forex
I had been looking for a book with currency-specific technical analysis techniques that I could recommend to the many people who are looking for such information. There was a book by Cornelius Luca with a similar title that went out of print. Now used copies are selling for as much as $1700. This one is far better and more useful.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great...with minor flaws
If you are already familiar with TA, then the strength of this book lay not in the standard discussion of patterns and indicators/oscillators. Instead, the main strength is to be found in the well-described trading setups that the author covers...setups that I have found to be quite profitable (when combined with proper risk-management, of course)
4-0 out of 5 stars Read First - for beginners
This book covers the basics of FX market first, then going through each standard TA tools one by one, as on how they apply to FX.If you have read books on TA already, you may find it really basic, even it keeps using FX trades as examples.

4-0 out of 5 stars Engaging and Informative
In a series of 'interviews', the book talks about "macro" investing from the viewpoint of a few relatively well-known managers. The reader should essentially be ready to use the book as a framework for his or her own critical thinking on what the "next big thing(s)" could be in the investing realm. While the points made by the interviewees often jump out of the book, the format of the interview and presentation leaves an incomplete picture. Given that most questions asked to the different managers were similar, it would have served the reader much better if the book was organized thematically and not as a series of disjoint/stand-alone interviews (typically, that is a magazine format?).Other than that, the reader will be able to pick up some interesting observations on risk management, asset allocation, information gathering and analysis and behavioral aspects of trading.Overall, a decent addition to the library. The reader shouldn't expect any hand-holding, though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Welcome addition to the literature
This book comes a welcomed addition to the burgeoning literature on hedge fund trading stratagems for the professional/informed layman. Each interview appears carefully selected to demonstrate the wide variety of professional backgrounds of the individuals working in the industry, as well as the ways in which each has attempted to add alpha to assets under management.

    Editorial Review

One day in 1992, Thomas Friedman toured a Lexus factory in Japan and marveled at the robots that put the luxury cars together. That evening, as he ate sushi on a Japanese bullet train, he read a story about yet another Middle East squabble between Palestinians and Israelis. And it hit him: Half the world was lusting after those Lexuses, or at least the brilliant technology that made them possible, and the other half was fighting over who owned which olive tree.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not just terms....
A treatise on globalization.Published in 1999 it seems apropos to review this in the context of history. In the midst of his conclusions / suggestions, as another reviewer cites, "Friedman on terrorism, two years prior to the 9/11 attacks: `When you combine the angry men that Americanization-globalization creates with the way in which globalization can super-empower people, you have what I believe is the real, immediate national security threat to the United States in the twenty-first century: the Super-Empowered Angry Man ...'."
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Explanation of Globalization That You Are Likely to Find
If you want to know exactly what globalization is, this is the book that contains perhaps the best explanation of globalization.Between the protests and the periodic G7 and G8 meeting of industrialized countries when the media is full of globalization stories, one finds there is a dearth of good explanationsof exactly what globalization is.Historically countries have always completed economically, developed countries used captured markets (colonies), during the mercantilistic era,the cold war was an aberration where the world competed on an idealogical level.Presently with the cold war at an end, there is an allure of attracting investment from multi-national companies. Vica-versa every country is also being evaluated in accordance to its business climate.A corrupt government, spendthrifts regime, or a fragile banking sytem loses votes (investment dollars) , countries with a good business climate receive investment dollars. The author's point is that no one company or country is actually controlling this system. The countries protesting the loudest are the same countries providing a weak business climate, and but they want to participate in the rewards. It is a natural outcome that as every country joins the international communityis judged by multitudes of investors on a worldwide basis.
4-0 out of 5 stars Intriquing and Positive Look at Globalization
Written in the late 1990s (and later updated), Tom Friedman's lengthy assessment of globalization and the post-Cold War ear has etchd its place as one of the more prominent optimistic takes on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important and useful text for understanding trade theory
Krugman and Obstfeld, two world renowned international economists, provide a full detailed analysis and examples for the basis of trade among nations. It is relatively straightforward to comprehend for both economists and noneconomists. International trade is an important component of economic policy for the growth and development of countries. This book examines various theoretical trade models and provides real world examples of policy formulation and their impact. The authors do not take any political positions, thus making their analysis a purely objective, or positive study.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not What I've Come to Expect from Krugman
First off, even if you totally discount the rest of my review, buy the low price international version of this book.On the March 10, 2005 episode of the daily show Krugman elucidated his feelings quite clearly."The real money is in textbooks. With other books, people need to decide whether to buy them or not. Students have to buy textbooks."Thanks Paul.I think I'm being charitable when I say that at $125 this book is a ripoff. It isn't even full color.

5-0 out of 5 stars Power and ample information and graphics
I found this book to be one of the best out on the topic, of which there are too few at present for such an important topic. The depth and breadth of place-making topics and their coverage makes this a very excellent easy-to-read-and-understand as well as a long-term reference tool. The graphics are very well done. Having recently attended a Harvard program on retail for cities and new towns and urban center given by Bob Gibbs and Terry Shook, I especially found the book right on target. I want to see more of these types of books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelente método para poner en práctica.
3-0 out of 5 stars Read between the lines.
It seems that a lot of people expect that books meant to be an introduction to forex trading should reveal precise secrets on how they can immediately become wealthy.Raghee is apparently quite successful as a Forex Trading Mentor. Although I have no personal experience with her training programs I was interested to learn what she has to say about the Forex market and did not expect that she would attempt to reveal everything she knows in a book.First of all, it would not be possible because learning to trade Forex requires ongoing mentoring and interaction with mentors over a period of months to years.Second of all, those who are interested in learning more will consider actual mentoring programs and/or getting to know people who are already successful in the business of trading. Therefore I would give Raghee the credit she is due for writing this book as an introduction to help people decide if further training is right for them.

2-0 out of 5 stars Terrible support.
Book read fine, but a simple question regarding whether her software plugin was a 1 time or monthly fee has gone unanswered 6 times via her contact information listed onher website mentioned in the book. Makes me wonder how sincere she is. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must read for any True American!
Why is America's economy in a never ending downward spiral? Why do most Americans think they get back money from taxes, and never think how much they already have paid? This book is a great eye-opener to what is really going on in America's tax system and what needs to be done to fix it.This book is not just about what needs to be fixed, but also what is being done right now, that most Americans are unaware of.For example, did you know that about half of the American popular pays one hundred percent of all income taxes. And did you know that corporations do not pay corporate taxes, we do!

2-0 out of 5 stars Easy Read
I'm generally NOT a book reader, but managed to read The FairTax book in just over one day, while on the road with the family.I'd already heard a great deal about the FairTax from listening to talk radio, but I was really hooked from just the first ten-page (or so) chapter.I find it hard to believe that anyone could learn about the history of the income tax system, and the 16th Ammendment, without beginning to boil. How could we have been so short-sighted to allow this to happen?
5-0 out of 5 stars The Fair Tax: The Country needs this badly!
