5-0 out of 5 stars Gives you the basic start you need.
So you're going to start a business, and if you have any money left over at the end of the year you're going to save part of it and spend part of it. OK, but your business partner isn't going to like that very much. 'What, you say you don't have a business partner?' Yes, you do, and he usually goes by the initials IRS.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overall resource but has some drawbacks
I decided that January 1, 2005 was a good time to start using Quickbooks Pro for my small business. I'd been using MYOB FirstEdge, but found it was rather limited in some areas. Whenever I think about starting to use new software, I browse around on Amazon for a good book on the package in question. This book stood out as probably a good resource and I was not far wrong. However, I have a couple of complaints. Firstly, the author's instructions on how to enter beginning balances is vague at best. Secondly, her discussion of complex issues such as how to set up Quickbooks for sales tax recording and reporting, is somewhat lacking. The book that came with the software actually does a better job at explaining Quickbooks' rather quirky method of sales tax accounting.
5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Treatise on QuickBooks Pro 2004
Ms. Ivens writes clearly, properly, and intelligently on QuickBooks software. The screen shots are legible, unlike those in some other computer books. The index is detailed, and thus useful.I counted only two typos in the 572 pages.
2-0 out of 5 stars Help pages online - not a guide!
I agree with the guy who said it's not a guide. Don't buy if you are confused by Quickbooks interface and plan to learn how to use it properly from financial point of view. To get the guide, simply print out the help pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good resource for the basic concepts
Clear, practical and well-organized resource for new bookkeepers and accounting students without bookkeeping experience who want to better understand the accounting cycle. Very user-friendly.

4-0 out of 5 stars A bookkeeping book for non-profits
The book is very good for an understanding of bookkeeping for non-profits with many reminders, charts and instructions. It continually emphasized what was discussed in earlier chapters. And, it gave a review of the bookkeeping basics. There is a lot of information for medium to large non-profits.The book discusses accrual and cash basis. This book would be a good tool for a medium or large organization. The book gave me confidence to do the job as treasurer of a small non-profit as I was reminded of the things I learned in accounting classes that I had many years ago. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Your Business at a Glance
This is an excellent book that teaches you to chart: where you would like to go on your business journey; where you are; and what you need to do to adjust your journey towards your profit goals.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the Basics
This is an excellent book for those learning to keep books, or needing to brush up on their bookeeping skills. It is very detailed, and simplified. I found it easy to follow and understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent basic bookkeeping book.
This book was puchased to teach a teenager the basic principles of bookkeeping prior to learning a computerized bookkeeping system. I have been "keeping the books" for businesses for 30+ years and feel it is important to know what the computer is doing behind the scenes. This book will help you to understand that. Both the teenager and I are very pleased with the logical and simple to understand explanations of bookkeeping. We especially like the worksheets which accompany the lessons. These give the student a feeling of accomplishment and help to reinforce the lessons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, very helpful.
I was a little intimidated by the topic. I used this book to help me get ready to take an accounting class in college. Wow! It really helped me. I took a accounting class in high school but did not do very good. I used this book and started to understand it. I could answer my professors questions in class. I got an A for the class! This book also showed me how to set up a excel spreadsheet which helped with my computer class. Cool book!
2-0 out of 5 stars Dry, really dry and computer based? forget it
OK, I admit that bookkeeping and accounting are generally perceived as dry subjects, but this was a Really boring read (-1 star)

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I read this book but the author goes heavily into tax accounting rather than bookkeeping services. If you hate working with taxes and want to learning about starting a home based bookkeepping service for clients, and let their tax accountant do the taxes, don't buy this book. It's not helpful.

2-0 out of 5 stars Utterly disappointing
After reading the reviews for this book, I was anxious to start reading it right away.Unfortunately,I returned the book the same day I received it.I am in the process of starting a bookkeeping business out of my home and Mr. Lewis's book did not help at all.As I skimmed the book I quickly realized that he prefers tax accounting and a commercial office environment. If you are looking for anoverview for setting up shop as a tax accountant, with employees, in an office this book will be perfect.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Advice!!A Must Have!!
This is an excellent book for anyone looking "to take the plunge" and establish their own tax and bookkeeping practice. The author gives great advice that is difficult to obtain from other established professionals. Mr. Lewis writes candidly on points such as how to fairly deal with problem clients and which clients to look for. There are also a couple good chapters about market research and the most practical ways to promote your tax business.Although technology has changed quite a bit since the book was written, you get a slight idea of the tools required of the profession. All in all an excellent book.Although most underlying principals haven't changed, I would love to see a second edition that discusses recent technology advances.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Got Me On Track!
First I bought "How to Rent Vacation Properties By Owner".This gave me the confidence to self-manage our own beach house. The rental organizer was just what I needed to keep track of the various stages of the life of a rental period from inquiry to deposit return. The only thing I have added is an item under check list for "changed availability calendar". This book goes everywhere with me.

5-0 out of 5 stars I have used this for two years
I have used this organizer for two years.I like the way everything is spelled out in this organizer. There is a place to keep track of my inventory in my home, an owner networking area, and a place to keep track of all the people I have used to work on my property, from cleaning staff to chimney sweeps.I use the notes area for myself.

3-0 out of 5 stars Depends where you're coming from
As a complete novice to accounting concepts I bought this book because I wanted to understand what type of information I need to track as a freelance professional services provider. I read all of Part 1 (several chapters) and can't say I know more than I did when I started. If you want to understand the difference between cash & accrual methods, the reason for single or double entry, the purpose of income statements, or how bookkeeping can help you as a management tool, look around at some other books before buying this sight unseen.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
I wanted "Bookeeping made simple" or "booking made easy" but both titles were out at every store I tried.
5-0 out of 5 stars Learn it before using Software like Quickbooks.
I am completely new to accounting and bookkeeping. I wanted a book I could teach myself the basics before using software.I went to my local Borders and found this book was the only one that actually made you DO exercises to make sure you understood what you were learning. So far this book has been great.Accounting terms and concepts can be confusing for normal people like me (chemist) but this book does a great job making you understand by doing and not just reading. There are a few mistakes in the answer section but the book teaches me well enough for me to realize that they are mistakes.Enough said.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for "survey" and "college accounting" courses
This well-written text closely tracks the content of "Survey of Accounting" and "College Accounting" textbooks and courses offered at many community and 4-year colleges. ("Principles of Accounting" courses are similar, but they contain more theory than the other two. This book is still good, but might need some supplements.) The exercises and problems are excellent, and the solutions appear right after them so it's easy to check your work. I would have given 5 stars if there were a few more memory aids and helpful hints to make learning the material even easier. But overall, very good and easy to follow.

4-0 out of 5 stars What a Lifesaver
Just what I was looking for.College accounting was long ago and unused for many years. This book is a great one for dusting off the brain cells. It is well written, easy to understand, and even has T account diagrams. 4-0 out of 5 stars For Real estate investor pros
Michael c. Thomsett's REAL ESTATE INVESTOR'S POCKET CALCULATOR: SIMPLE WAYS TO COMPUTER CASHFLOW, VALUE, RETURN, AND OTHER KEY FINANCIAL MEASUREMENTSfinally places in the investor's hands the same tools real estate agents use to calculate yield, values, taxable income and operating expenses. All different types of value are revealed in chapters which cover everything from acceleration techniques and methods for reducing interest to ways of maximizing investment returns. Worksheets, tables and charts provide clarity and all the formulas needed to succeed. Very highly recommended as an essential, basic pick any real estate investor should keep at hand.
3-0 out of 5 stars invalid formulas
Correct me if I am wrong but looking at the definitions for assessment ratios they are defined as appraised price (P) * assessment ratio (R) = assessed value (A) so restating this as P * R = A then R = A / P which is not consistent with the book. The book states that R = P / A which is invalid. If you take the example of asked price which for this example lets say it is the appraised price of $107,500and assessed value of A = 90000.If you use the formula of R = A / P then the ratio is 83.7% if you run the numbers defined in the book formula you get 1.194444444444.Other than that, the book has been very good at figuring the value of a given property. This also applies to the Assessment ratio adjusted.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best guide ever for students majoring in Accounting!!!
I just purchased this book and I am so impressed! I am a college student majoring in Accouting. Sometimes my textbooks do not adequately cover certain topics or we are expected to know more than what is in our text. This is not only a fabulous dictionary of Accounting terms, but it is a fabulous reference for looking up any formulas. It also acts as a study guide and additional reference to help in most Accounting classes. Also various levels of Accounting classes. (Financial, Managerial, Etc.) It already has helped me tremendously in my work for this week. I am so glad I bought it! I highly reccommend it!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Book has bad title
I was very unhappy with this accounting textbook. With almost 500 pages devoted to defining accounting terminology out of a 1,000 page book, Siegel/Schim should have titled it "An Accounting Dictionary with some shallow chapters on Accounting." The remaining 500 pages gave only a shallow review of accounting procedures.Space dedicated to business accounting is lost because there is a chapter on doing personal tax returns and one on personal financial planning. This personal aspect doesn't belong since the book's title, "Accounting Handbook" implies business accounting. Now if the authors are trying to connect a business owner's decisionmaking with his personal planning, than why were there no chapters on partnership and corporate tax planning or income tax preparation? The chapter on non-profits was a terribly short 15 pages long. There is no discussion of G/L, AP, AR or other mundane, but required basics of accounting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Got me through college
The Accounting Handbook was very helpfull during my time in college accounting courses. It has since be a very helpfull desk reference in my practice. One can't go wrong with the price of this very handy volume. There are chapters on various topics ranging from basic accounting to valueadded accounting. There is also a very handy glossary/dictionary ofhundreds of accounting and IT terms. ... Read more

THIS IS TRUE THAT YOU PROVIDE DETAIL ABOUT MERCHANDISING ,AND I FOUND IT THE BEST ONE IN THE WORLD OF LIBRARY

3-0 out of 5 stars Good merchandising info, math not too helpful
As a newcomer to merchandising, I found this book's explanations of key terminology and tips on merchandise planning to be very helpful. The math, however, was entirely too simplistic to be of much use. This book containsan entire chapter on how to use a calculator. If you're looking for a goodgeneral overview of the field, this is a good book. But anyone with anelementary education should already know the math. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential to any small business
It's hard to believe the classic Book-Keeping & Accounting For The Small Business: How To Keep The Books And Maintain Financial Control Over Your Business is now in its 7th revised, updated edition: its new incarnation and updated details will continue to appeal to modern readers, whether they be sole proprietors, partners, or limited corporations. Because this is written in the UK, some issues, such as VAT taxes, may not apply outside; but the basics of understanding wages, taxes, accounts, and double entry book-keeping are essential to any small business.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not What I expected
Somewhat disappointed in the book.I was looking for more guidance in starting up a home based bookkeeping service or a smaller service--one with no employees. One of the bullets or selling points on front of book said "Run your own profitable business from home" but the book only dedicated 7-8 pages on this topic. But there was some good advice and items that made you stop and think so it wasn't a total waste.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little disappointed
I was alittle disappointed. The author assumes that you're going "gung ho" & opening a bookkeeping business with a location & several employees.I was looking for more information on opening a small in-home business with just me.Of course, there are some good tips that will be helpful someday. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not exactly what I expected, but helpful
Half of this book deals with the technology of organizing your own business. While that would have been very helpful in 1994, it is outdated now.If you are new to technology you may still find some good advice in those sections dealing with computer hardware, software (desktop, information management, and accounting).I just skimmed those sections to make sure I wasn't missing anything.5-0 out of 5 stars Clarifies accounting the waywheat is separated from chaff
Written for business people who want to be accounting and computerized accounting systems literate. No longer does one have to be in awe of the professionals who spout jargon and keep the business person dependent ontheir supposed expertise. This book represents liberation for the formerlyfiscally challenged.

5-0 out of 5 stars It makes accounting understandable and business easy!
