I received the book, it was new, BUT IT WAS NOT HARDCOVER as "CAIMAN" said.

I got ripped off. I thought it was a good price for the hardcover edition, but I got the soft cover. It didn't return it becuase I'm lazy but I should have.

Scary at first, but you'll learn a lot
I must confess the first time I opened the book I was surprised by how mathematical this book is. But as you read on you find that you learn more from this book than from others because microeconomic principles are well stated and proved rather than defined with vague statements. ... Read more

Very good coverage on cross-sectional, but not enough of panel data
This book does an excellent job in covering cross-sectional and microeconometric models (Stata codes for all examples in the book are available from UCLA's webside). However, the exposure to panel data is limited. For a theoretical overview of panel data econometrics, I'd recommend Hsiao and Baltagi. For applied work, Edward Frees wrote a good book, although his book is more from the social science perspective (SAS and Stata codes are provided).

The best? Not for me (and everyone I know).
Clearly this product is overrated. In my opinion the book is a complete mess, with definitions, propositions and theorems mixed with the main text and not clearly evidenced from it.
A Gem
Wooldridge's "Econometric Analysis of Cross Section and Panel Data" is a gem.As a student of applied microeconomics, I found reading his undergraduate book "Introductory Econometrics" is a great complement of reading this graduate text -- especially part I of the UG book (especially the parts of interaction terms, dummy variables); part III (panel data) might be too chatty.I think both of his books worth every penny that I paid.Although, I think Hayashi text is great, maybe it is geared toward time series econometricians.For example, Wooldridge's example of omitted variable bias is clearer to me (using wage-education regression from labor economics and compute the asymptotic inconsistency of OLS estimator with omitted variable bias), compared to Hayashi's simultaneity bias.Both are nice illustration of endogenity, but I prefer Woolridge's text. ... A clear, concise, and well written text on the economic choices and behaviors of nations
If you are familiar with Mankiw's introductory text "Principles of Economics", you know that he writes in a clear, concise, and as lively a manner as you are likely to find in a text on economics.Since I find economics quite interesting, I wanted more when I read through that textbook.For those of us who felt that desire, Mankiw has updated his intermediate text on macroeconomics for this sixth edition.

Oblivious to the reader
I am currently using this book for my Multinational Finance class.This book is not written with the student in mind.There are very few complete examples to learn from, and most of those are poorly worded.There is a lack of simplicity and elegance to all of the materials presented in this book.I think the writers forgot that students need to learn from this book.There are no study aids in this book, and the website for the book is sparse.You will not gain knowledge from this book, only confusion. ... Using in my Masters of Science in Real Estate Program
This book is great for the beginner and seasoned real estate professional.If you are not strong in finance, it will obviously take you longer to understand but the material is presented in such a way that it makes sense.The CD that comes along with the book is excellent in helping you to understand the concepts.This is one of those textbooks where you do not really need a teacher, you could just teach yourself.It will make for a great reference book. ... Is Hollywood sleeping?
Disclaimer: this was the first-ever, and so far the only, "business novel" (as I call them), I have read. Hence my benchmark is not other books of the same genre, but literature in its broadest sense.
Very Good Book and a look at "the Experts"
As an academic & a "Wall-Streeter" & a professional trader (of my own money) I must surely qualify as an "expert."
This book is suspect.
I am by no means an economist, and much less an expert on finance, but this book strikes me as a thinly veiled, unsubtle hatchet job on the efficient markets hypothesis.I've seen much subtler discussions of the Efficient Market Hypothesis written for general audiences, enough of them so I can recognize that Lowenstein doesn't get it; he equates efficient markets with "the price that the market offers is always the intrinsic value," and not with "you can't reliably predict intrinsic value any better than market prices themselves do."This is a crucial difference, because it is only by assuming that market efficiency is the first that his attack holds water.

Excellent introductory text
Mankiw's textbook provided me with a solid introduction to Economics. I read the book in high school and passed both AP Micro- and Macroeconomics because of it. Mankiw's description of basic concepts is more clear than any other I have subsequently encountered (for example, economic profits), and his demonstration of practical applications should excite any student (for example, OPEC as an oligopoly). This book should be worthwhile for anyone interested in learning the basics of Economics.

This is the Study Guide
The presentation of this book is confusing. The book presented is the study guide to Mankiw's "Priciple of Economics" prepared by David Hakes, not a paperback Edition of the Hardcover Testbook. Caveat Emptor!

An excellent introduction to Economics
Principles of Economics is an excellent book to introduce you in the world of Economics. In one text book you have the basic intuitive and analytical tools to understand the economic rationality and the way it analyzes human behavior (supply-demand model, consumers, firms and markets, perfect competence, monopoly, oligopoly, monopolistic competition, intro to games theory, externalities). You also have the analysis of the Macroeconomic issues (GDP, inflation, growth, money, international trade, economic policies). In my opinion the Macroeconomics part (2nd part of the book) is not as good as the Micro one, but it is still a good approach for beginners. It explains the basic concepts and the way economic policies affect macroeconomic variables. But, I live in a developing country, so although it contains the basics ideas there are some important issues for developing countries which are not considered. However, considering that this book is just an introduction to the field of Economics, I think this does not seriously affect the quality of the book and the effort made to make Economics easy to understand.

Inventory Accuracy in action
As a cost analyst for a mid-sized manufacturer, I found this book invaluable for setting up analyses of cycle counts, and it was THE guide for putting together a full physical count process when our parent company demanded it.It's a pleasure to read (yes, this, a book on managing inventory, is a PLEASURE to read!); Piasecki's take on what a physical count is REALLY like is priceless.He really has a complete grasp of what it means to have human beings managing inventory.See his chapter on what machines and humans each do best.

Academic. A text book that needs a refresher for today's issues.
Rick is first and foremost a professor, so the book follows an academic format best suited for the young student of development seeking a broad introduction to the process.Of course, the real world is more complex than any textbook could ever capture.That said, the book has become a bitdated for the contemporary developer, whose world is increasingly governed by investors, special interest groups and oft ill-informed government officials!The book delivers fundamental building blocks in a logical, sequential process.The examples cited are, as another reviewer pointed out, on average probably 14 year old analogies.Perhaps the largest ommission is an accurate portrayal of what a developer really does - assembles a diverse team of people together to share in a singular vision, then rule over this creative, temperamental team with an iron fist in velvet gloves.A chapter called 'Cat Herding' would best summarize that world.
Excellent starter book
Excellent starter book. Should be required reading for every real estate professional. Wished I'd had about 5 years ago.

ULI Guide
For its high price, you may want to seriously think about your needs.If your intention is to buy a book for a broad overview of the development process with a somewhat academic approach, then this may be right for you. If you are builder or someone with prior real estate brokerage/service experience, you may find this too ivory tower and not practical.This book was a bit theoretical for my taste.Read more

Candlestick patterns work -- regardless of whether the market rises or falls !!
I attended Steve's seminar 2 years ago, and have been using candlestick patterns ever since. This is an excellent book which provides an easy-to-read introduction to candlestick charts. Steve's approach is a major element of my trading plan.

Best Book I Have Read on Candlestick Trading
I have read Steve Nison's books on Candlestick Trading, and they do not come close to the clarity that Stephen Bigalow provides in this book. Horrible Book
The only great thing about this book is its small size and thats about it. The text doesn't do a very good job of explaining the ideas and concepts. Say you are given certain parts of an equation it doesn't really show you how to use to components to solve for the right number. Instead it gives you a wonderful GENERAL overview of an idea that is minimal in explanation. I'm almost at the point of flipping out because the lack of explanations and I'm only on Chapter 2.

Don't be excited about this book's small size and light weight, the text needs more examples to support you while doing homework.Breif chapter explantions caused me to nearly fail my class.Was NOT a gret book, in fact many students complained to the Dean regarding this book.Good luck.

Good for MBA class
Overall I liked the book. But there are some goofy computer graphics and sideline stories that take up room and distract the reader. The definitions need to be in the side margins. The book is written well with a lot of examples. It was very expensive and has a lot of color through out it and the cover. I used the optional software PT3 that allows the students to do the homework online. It is good for the students-but there are some formatting errors and the hints are useless. I got an A in the class so I am not complaining. I would reccomend it for upper level students only. ... Read more

Excellent introduction to the subject
I read this book as the assigned text for a course in Quantitative Analysis and found it to be an excellent text for such a class.Each Model and equation presented is explained through realistic examples, illustrations, and explanations of the math.This made the subject very easy to comprehend and apply to the real world.

Difference between 2001 First edition and 2004 Second edition?
Given that the 2001 First edition is selling for $30 less used than the 2004 Second edition, is there a big difference between the 2 editions.Should I just save myself $30 and buy the first edition?
A big improvement
This text is a great improvement over the material the CFA program used in the mid-90s. Since it is intended to provide a survey of basic statistics and their applications in finance, it would be wrong to expect a deep treatise on any one subject.There are many real world applications used to describe the concepts tackled in this book. The learning outcomes listed at the beginning of each chapter provide a road map for the reader so that all salient points will be absorbed. Think twice before buying
